Bishops, priests, members of religious communities, parents, and the devout laity haue considered sacrifices for the Catholic education of our youth as an ordinary daily duty. ARCHBISHOP MCNICHOLAS 552773 UCCESS is most eminentl achieved b him fl r who is thoroughly conscious of a deiinite pur- pose in life, and who is continually and active- ' !f ly interested in the attainment of this purpose. The thought of it inspires him to use every possible hel to achieve it. His workin for this or that oal P S S thus becomes a second nature to him, and success is the necessary outcome. Looking with the eye of Faith into the mirror of conscience, we know, and We must unmistakably re- alize that God is our destination, our goal and purpose in life. We are called to higher joys than thebaubles of this World can provide. These joys consist in the possession of God as the Supreme Object of every noble aspiration of the soul. When Holy Communion is received, the only reason Why these joys are not tangibly ours, is because we see now through a glass, in a dark mannerf' But what of repeated association with Christ in Holy Communion? Frequent meetings under pleasant sur- roundings tend to promote love, to seal a friendship. This friendship with Christ, cultivated and nurtured by frequent Communion, is time's greatest assurance of reaching the Eternal Goal of Life. -FATHER HERBERT lah , J 'TEIWF' -..ga 10 -:fwfr A I H 14441- Q 2:51, YET 'sv REVERFND HERBERT KLGSTERKEMPIER, O.lf.M. With the realization comes appreciation, 'le il S 125 ii through the fostering care of our pastors the realization of such and with the appreciation grows the feeling of gratitude, grows the power for the good things received to function in our lives. Our pastors have brightened our livesg they have gladdened our livesg they have extended our opportunities for good by their generous self sacrifice and assistance in making a Catholic High School education pos- sible for us. We have put forth the effort to cooperate with our beloved teachers in their earnest endeavors to teach us to evaluate properly the lights and shades of life-their endeavors to have us live supernatural lives in Christ. The pen of Tertullian, famed apologist of early Christian times, may say for us: We are not strangers to life. We are fully aware of the gratitude we owe to God, Our Lord and Creator. We reject none of the fruits of His Handiworkg we only abstain from their immoderate or unlawful use. . Grateful in the possibilities our pastors have secured for us, we go forth, our lives the expression of our gratitude. Happily the bond of pastoral union does not cease. The priestly care, the priestly benediction goes with us to bless our endeavors, to help us to the fullest realization of our part in life. For our pastors, united we pray, Bless their labors with abundant fruit, O God, and may we to whom they minister be their joy and con- solation here and in heaven their everlasting crown. -DOROTHY MEYERS, '35 13 fag..- -S fwfr A 44 4: 'SISTER 'SISTER .SISTER 'SISTER SISTER SISTER SISTER SISTER SISTER SISTER SISTER The F acult REV. VITALIS AMA ANTH are 'Go the Class of 1935: As children of a school dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels surely our Blessed Mother expects something very particular of you. What desire could be dearer to her heart than that you model your life on that of her divine Son? The record of our Savior's day is, He went about doing good. Each of you must do good. Do good to God. Surely you can best do this by cultivating a strong, personal love for Jesus. Let your aim be to know Him more clearly, to love Him more dearly, to serve Him more sincerely. Do good to your neighbor. View him in the light of the great St. Paul's classic description of charity in his First Letter to the Corinthians, see in each who comes into your life one to whom you can ren- der a service to make him holier, happier. Do good to yourself. Remember your royal destiny-adopted child of God, co-heir with Christ, placed on earth to merit heaven. To do this aright you must needs, like the Wise Men of old, follow a guiding star. The star led the Magi to a cave, where they found the Child with His Mother. Ever and always you will find the Child with His Mother. The parting advice Alma Mater gives you is, keep constantly in your heart and often on your lips the prayer repeated so often in school, Jesus, make me more like Mary, Mary, make me more like thee. -THE FACULTY -..gf 15 EN.- I AMA ANTH ef'- Amaranth Staff Editor in Cloief ,....... Why Amaranth? There is fascination both in the amaranth plant and in its very name. The amaranth is a classic flower of lance-shaped leaves, green and purple, bearing close clustered crimson flowers. To sainted Clement of Alexandria, to sage Milton, to nature-loving Wordsworth, to clever Pope, to devout Cow- per, to poets learned and religious the amaranth was a flower symbolic of immortality, an emblem of the unfading, the everlasting, the ever-to-be-remembered. To us the amaranth is all this and more. The close packed blossoms are for us re- minders of the unity, loyalty, and harmonious class spirit that prevailed among us, and their color is the cheer that brightens and beautifies life. Because of all this, is it surprising that our year book is to us an amaranth? Treasuring as we do the friendships of our classmates, the memories of our school days, the associa- tions with our teachers, our activities, our achievements, and our endeavors, we would bind them all in everlasting remem- brance. With these sentiments We regard the Amaranth of '35, -ELEANOR GILL, '35. -.,.,g+ 18 ig..- AMA ANTH Anna Marie Andrews St. Iames Beatrice Bachmann St. Aloysius Margaret M. Our Lady, Virgin-Mother, be your model. Let the Ecce ancilla Domini which sustained her in the abject pov- erty of Bethlehem, which sweetened the exile in Egypt, which illumined the humble home at Nazareth, which strengthened the ascent to Calvary, which kept her close to the cross of her dying Son inspire you to see Christ and to live for Him in all the events of life. Your endeavor to keep close to Christ by the imitation of His meek and humble Virgin-Mother in obedience, charity, labor, suffering, courage, and resignation will bring into your lives an indescribable charm, a nameless grace, that will engender confidence and become a dominating factor for the spread of good. You must never forget that it is woman's vocation to lead by tenderness, gentleness, activity, and courage. Let Ecce ancilla Domini then, be your slogan now in the ranks of fair maidenhood, as too in that momentous hour when you decide upon a choice of state of life. Ecce ancilla Domini be your passport should you enter the religious state, should you seal the contract for the married state, or should you determine to remain unmarried, active in works of mercy and charity, a champion of Catholic Social Service. With a reverberating, Lead, and I follow, Our Lady of the Angels stepped into the vanguard of soldiers devoted to the interests of Christ the King. September 1934, we reorganized the existing societies of our school into the Catholic Action Guild -this to include the C. S. M. C. unit, the religious council, and the stu- dent council. The purpose of the Guild is the purpose of Catholic Action-to make us helpers of the Holy Father. Our work is lifted to the plane of work of Sisters and Priests. To live up to the word helpers we must Hrst bring Christ into our own lives and make Him a part of our daily routine, and then we may incite others to follow Christ as their leader. The first meeting of the C. A. G. officers with the school was held in the form of a rally on the first Friday in October. Father Herbert, interested in our every work, blessed our Guild with priestly benediction. Reverend Mother Clarissa would have part in our endeavors and gave us a statue of the pleading Christ to be enthroned at our meet- ings, to urge us on by the love of His own Heart. With a Christo duce rivalling the God wills it! of the olden Crusaders we entered upon our duties. Headquarters? Certainly we have headquarters. The modest garage on the school -..ag 63 fy.- PPPPPP- A TH 144614- premises boasts our sign Catholic Action Guild Headquarters. From this storehouse emanate challenging posters, rousing calls, active work, and check up reports on the activities sponsored by O. L. A.'s C. A. G. BETTY Rosa FEDERLE, '35 c-wg Gcitliolic Action Activities G69 ACH MONTH the Catholic Action Guild chooses some special endeavor for the month. Summarized since its organization in October our record reads: OCTOBER-Houses far and near were canvassed for our big Catholic Literature Drive. Morning after morning girls bravely trudged to school carrying armloads of literature to be redistributed at charitable institutions. A gala hour granted by the appreciative faculty celebrated our victory. Carrying large be-ribboned and gaily dec- orated placards emblazoning, We Won, 7S,000 Pieces, Hurrah for Freshies, Sophomore Victory, and the like, we proudly paraded the streets of St. Bernard, while the Band, glorious in new regalia, entuned Our Alma Mater's Glory. NOVEMBER-Month of the drive for Mission funds! Month of the deluge of papers! How paper came pouring in! It came in the arms of zealous workers, on the backs of obliging brothers, on bicycles, scooters, and roller skates, in wagons, autos and trucks. Classes took their turns at Headquarters, where the paper was received, weighed, packed, and tied-71,000 pounds of paper. DECEMBER-December was pre-eminently the month for mission work. Clubs were established for sewing, saving pennies, mounting holy pictures, for collecting stamps and tinfoil. Worn garments were brought to Headquarters to be mended, crippled toys to be repaired. All through the school Santa's helpers were outrivalling one another in work, everywhere illuminating posters reminded us of the coming of Christ, the Light of the World. A week before Christmas the boxes were ready to be shipped. A penny raffle defrayed freight and express charges and funded checks for the missions far and near. Our help Went to all parts of the globe-to china, to India, to Irelandg here in our own U. S. to the North, South, East, and West. Our pet endeavor was the annual Christmas party for the little colored folks at St. Anthony School. Here Santa Claus needed a tribe of Brownies to help him distribute toys to the smaller children, gifts of beads, pencils, and books to the older ones, fruit and candy to all. --.gif 64 EM.- PPPPPP- A 46444- JANUARY-With January came the annual Retreat. The gay auditorium was transformed into a lovely chapel, where myriads of palms, ferns, and sweet smelling flowers surrounded the altar, surmounted by the pleading Christ. The Sacramental Christ dwelt with us from the opening Mass to the closing Benediction. All our lives we shall have to thank Father Forest McGee, O. F. M., for making so clear to us the right way for a Catholic girl to live, explaining the personal love Christ bears to us, and for the reiterated lesson that sanctity is gained by doing the ordinary things of life uncommonly well. FEBRUARY- Two for a nickel on this beautiful table cover. Try our grab-bag, folks. Win the treasure chest. Visit the gift Shop. These and other sounds were heard intermingled with dance strains from the gym, and Keno, Lotto, from the study hall on the evening of February 12, when we were making our most zealous efforts to be little missionaries in the interest of our own school. MARCH and APRIL-Lenten months lured us to closer union with our Savior. In- tensive study of the liturgy made the Church dearer to us, our goal of daily Holy Com- munions kept Christ living in our midst. Will not the Lenten restraints, the mortifica- tions persevered in for two months be a continued source of graces for life? Big added helps came from Father Herbert's series of sermons on union with Christ and from the Dominican Father Scanlan's talks on purity of life. MAY-the beautiful ceremony of enthroning and crowning our Lady's statue in the bower of flowers beside the chapel climaxed the activities of the Catholic Action Guild for the year. The procession of the entire student body, led by the privileged seniors and augmented by crowds of devout onlookers, devoutly sang our Lady's praises and reverently received the Sacramental Benediction. Consecrated to Our Blessed Mother we confidently go forth from Alma Mater, keeping the refrain, Jesus, make me more like Mary, Mary, make me more like thee, the watchword of our lives. VIRGINIA MATUSKA, '35 -..aa 65 Ba..- l r wwf A 4440- Our Chapel 966 Dear little chapel, nestled there 1 'Neath Alma Mater's sheltering care, What joys you hold, what hlessings, too What counsel wise and sweet and true! Within your portals, 'midst the glow Of mellow lights, in whispers low, Such precious moments we have spent Before the Blessed Sacrament! How often, weary, we have sought The peace a visit always hrought! Each joy and sorrow we have told To Christ veiled there with cloth of gold You've heen a heacon, hright and clear, To guide us through each passing year, You've been a haven sweet for rest When cares upon us thickly pressed. Dear Chapel, still in times of stress, In hours of throbbing happiness, Your peace, your holy joy will rest, Of Alma Mater's gifts, the hest. MARY CATHERINE BECK, -.,.,5f 6 7 EM.- WPPPP: 444:4- 'Uergil ffkpofrts for Us The Catholic Action Guild of Our Lady of the Angels has functioned with great success: A woman was the leader of the deed. Study hour: All were hushed and kept their faces intent. Sister confronts us with an unexpected test: Yours is the right to command, mine is the duty to obey. The lesson assi nment is iven: It is enou h and more than enou h. 8 S 8 S Autograph albums are passed from girl to girl: Perhaps at some time it will be a joy to remember these things. Sister presents the examination questions saying they are easy, but I fear the Greeks and the gifts they bring. We helped a neighbor who can not answer a question: Not ignorant of evils, I have learned to succor the distressed. Rumors are afloat about the Roger Bacon boys in the ofiice: For what purpose do they come? What do they seek? Who is the author? Is it a religious intent? Having learned the cause, the girls prepare themselves for the coming feast. The Amaranfh Staff announces a o ularit contest: NV hat sentiment arises in our P P Y Y mind? The contest is over, but someone is keeping the eternal wound in her heart, - the injury of her slighted beauty. Feeling aroused when sent to the detention class: There is no honor gained in pun- ishing a woman. Day after day passes on: Through various trials, through so many crises of affairs we are making our Way. We are troubled about our future work, for variable and fickle is woman. We are advised, Rouse your courage and dismiss troublesome cares. After balancing fates with contrary fates, we feel reassured that the fates will find a way. It is the close of school: The last day is come, the inevitable hour. We have received our diplomas: Live happy, your fortune is already accomplished. We leave school determined, Whatever fortune is to be borne shall be borne. Our parting greeting to Alma Mater: Your honor, name, and praise shall ever live with me. Infuriated when Countess Mercedes thinks the Queen surely jests, Leandra orders her imprisoned and goes to rest. She awakens to find herself outcast, derided, and finally starving. Repentant at length Leandra returns to the palace there to find her own replica ruling. The new Queen, Leandra's own Guardian Angel, restores the humble penitent, thus fulfilling St. Luke's rejoinder: He hath exalted them of low degree. Do you wonder at our joy in the Mothers Club, the Parent-Teacher Association of Our Lady of the Angels? Knowing and loving what our mothers do for us at home. we feel that we need them here at school, too, to mother our cause. The Mothers Club listens while need tells our story. Immediately the Club becomes a Committee of Ways and Means to secure for us best results. Whether it is a drive made by the Catholic Action Guild for the wants of the needy, a school activity that looks for encouragement, a social function that needs direction and guidance, a party or social in search of leaders, the Mothers Club is on hand to sponsor the cause. Sincerely we appreciate all that the Mothers have done for our school, gratefully we pray that the good may be stored up for them for their garnering in Heaven. All honor to the Mothers Club and to its able officers of our senior year: President, Mrs. F. Keller, Vice President, Mrs. J. Eichhorng Recording Secretary, Mrs. H. Weil, Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Geo. Fitzpatrick, Treasurer, Mrs. O. Bangertg Registrar, Mrs. J. Wolf. FLORENCE DES MARIAS, '35 was Our Alumnae President ....., ,............ E DNA BENZ Secretary .,...... ,........... R OSE MARIONI Vice President ............ ............ M ARY CUNNINGHAM Treuxurer ...,.,......................,...... MARGARET TEUFEN The enthusiasm of our Catholic Action Guild spread rapidly through the school and beyond the school. Caught up by the zeal of the Guild, the Alumnae Association was fired to do something special for Christ, to be most intimately united with Him. How best could this be done? Surely by letting the light shine. For this reason the Alumnae secured the privilege of keeping the sanctuary light perpetually burning in the Sisters' Chapel. Lighted by this grace, they drew nearer still and formed a band of honor to keep a day of recollection. Under the direction of Father Herbert they spent April 7 at Alma Mater, where they assisted at High Mass, united in common prayer, attended the lectures, meditated on the truths proposed, and received sacramental Benediction. Now that our high school life is come to its end, we are eager to join the ranks of the Alumnae, and to us as to our older sisters we feel that our ever courteous Alma Mater will say, Welcome, my children, I want youg I need you.
