We are being preparedlfor our work in life, our careers. Prep- aration of some kind is necessary. but no one knows just what consti- tutes an ideal preparation for those whose opportunities for activity are expanding day by day. Some may say: A College Education ; but even college education for women is still experimental. It has not reached its perfection because there are new and different openings con- tinually coming before modern women. With women making their mark in professions and in business, it is a foregone conclusion that adequate training must be provided for them. The present opportunities have come to woman through the edu- cation provided for her. Dr. Sabin, the only woman member of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research says. There is no end to womanis development in science, as in the arts and professions. and in business if she has the will to work. ' There are many advantages of being a woman of 1930 as compared, for instance, with being a woman of 1900. Her increased freedom is due, in part, to woman suffrage. Which, again, is the result of the ambition of a woman, Susan B. Anthony. Modern woman would not exchange her present day life, with all its freedom and advantages, for the life of any woman of the past. Modern freedom is noticeable even in the variety and originelity of decoration within the home. Women have been released from household drudgery by the many mechanical and electrical devices invented since 1900. They now have ample time to pursue diEerent courses. and are interested in things which heretofore did not appeal to them. Business women, literary women. prima donnas, actresses, artists, and scientists are rapidly pushing their i way out of the old sphere of domestic limitations. Then, there are the professional women: doctors, lawyers, teachers. nurses, and social workers, who are doing very much to beneht humanity. Politicians there are, too, who try to rule the country in place of their homes! Physical liberation has been brought about by the sportswoman. No longer do women hesitate to take part in athletic activities which formerly had been for men only. Girls, the same as boys, march to basket-ball and football games, sing the school songs, and split their lungs at the signal of the cheer leader. They play hockey, tennis. basketaball, golf. They take part in any activity Which may broaden their intellect and sense of sportsmanship. Since women have this wide and unlimited choice afforded by mod- WWWWWWWWW l WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW igll l W W WWWWWWGWWWWMWWWWWWW WWW i ll W32W wwwmwmwmmmmwmmwmwmmmwmmmels ewmmmhmwmwm ;h$fmmwmwwwmwmwmwwwmw l :l ern liberty and freedom. have they forgotten their calling of home builder? Let us hope not. Ex-president Roosevelt was once quoted as saying, HThe greatest thing for any woman is to be a good wife and mother. What human being can ever forget his mother and everything she has done for him? Surely such memories are a tribute to those who did not strive for laurels but heeded their call quietly and humbly. Scientific expeditions, business propositions, and great works of art may have succeeded, failed, or have been forgotten, but the word 'lMother is first and foremost in every heart and mind. Housekeep- ing may be made as interesting as any other business or career. Much time can be spent on the preparation of food. Proper training of child dren is no small achievement and will occupy much time. Henry Ford, noted business man, says: 'iIf women are wise, they will be a coming power in the home, not in industry. Homes are the motives to man; industry exists only because in the end it ministers to homes. The most exalted career open to women is that of the religious state. For centuries women have served in this Army of the Lord with the success that is given only to a consecrated cause! It is impossible to exaggerate the influence of the Catholic Sisterhoods upon society. All humanity bows in respectful homage to those women who have given up all to serve Christ. No form of human misery or need but has its ministering angels to alleviate or to satisfy it. The youth. the orphan. the sick, the poor, the old, the feeble minded, the fallen, all are cared for by some self-sacrificing Sisterhood. When a new need arises, noble- minded women come to the front offering their services. Thus today we have the Medical Missionaries, Catechists, and the Religious Social workers. What ever our undertaking or career may be, let us always keep before us our class motto: HLoyalty and Service. Let us pray that the angels of virtue and science, who illumine our corridors. will light up the path so that we Will not stumble over ignorance and vice. Mary Hohmann. ,30. The tall, ivy-colored building loomed dark and fore- boding in its shadows. Now and then the moon's f1tfu1 rays disclosed a group of stealthily whispering iigures huddled close to the brick wall. This was an untimely scene for Briarwood College. The chimes of a distant clock had just struck one. According to dormitory rules, all girls mUSt be in bed by 10 o'clock. The whispering continued until one hooded figure, stepping for- ward, said in a low voice, l'It's dark enough now, and eyeryone's asleep. There's no chance of being caught. We may as well begin. uAll right. We're ready. Let's go. The several figures then entered a door fairly hidden in the gloomy shadows and cautiously began to ascend the stairs. liDon,t forget, girls, be as quiet as possible. You know how watch- ful Miss Barry is. If she should catch us, it would mean home for all of us. By this time they had reached the second floor, and were stealthily and slowly making their way along the corridor. A board creaked under their weight. Terrified, all stopped and listened. But not a sound was heard from behind the closed doors that lined each side of the long hallway. The party proceeded more cautiously until the farthest end of the corridor was reached. Stepping up to the last door, the one who was apparently the leader knocked softly but sharply upon it. There being no answer, the knock was repeated. This time, after an interval that seemed an age, a sleepy voice in- quired, ilWho is there? HLet me in, came the prompt reply. But who is it? l'One of the girls. I must see you. Then footsteps were heard inside and iinally the sound of a key being turned indicated that the order was obeyed. Before any action could be taken to prevent it, the half dozen masked figures pushed their way into the room, surrounding the small figure that was too frightened to speak. In the faint light. the figures produced bandages and promptly proceeded to bind the mouth and hands of their victim, who fought off as best she could the assaults of her captors. Carefully they retraced their steps down the stairs through another long and very dark passage to the tiny hidden door. When they had almost reached it, something behind them fell with an echoing thud and caused more than one to gasp. Quickening their steps, they soon reached the door. Then the spokesman pushed the hapless victim out of the door saying, You must walk across the garden up to the top of the observa- tory tower, around the path which is next to the graveyard. through a tiny thicket to the back door of the college where we will be waiting to let you in. You must do this or lose your position in the college. At this the captive began to kick and mumble incomprehensibly. but she was thrust out into the dark night, where the moon was still playing behind the clouds. The door behind her was shut and locked. and she was but one of the shadows. Three of her captors were now sentlto watch the door on the other side of the building and receive the bew11dered freshman. Minutes passed slowly, quietly, and without event. No one spoke. The girls at both doors were surprised when they heard a clock strike the hour of two. At half past two there was still no sign of their luckless victim. She had been gone an hour and the entire trip should not have taken more than lifteen minutes. When the clock struck three. they left their posts, ascended the stairs, disappearing behind doors to bury their heads in their pillows, but not to sleep. Far from them was even the thought of sleep. They lay wide awake, wondering every mo- ment what would happen next, feeling as guilty as murderers. What had happened to that freshman? Early the next morning after the general assembly, six girls with pitifully haggard faces were ordered to report at once to the principal's office. At this startling news, the six faces grew a shade paler. Without looking at each other and feeling too sick at heart to speak, they repaired to the oflice. Before long a stern, forbidding flgure entered. When she had seated herself, the principal broke the silence with a sharp question, At what time did you retire last evening? The question met With no answer until iinally one girl spoke. at hrst hesitatingly and excited; then, encouraged by her superior's silence, she confessed their guilt, telling the entire story from beginning to end.
