Dr. Williain P. Latham, one of the finest composers for bands, wrote 11 composition in honor of this event, and it was performed at the Silver Anniversary concert for the first time. Guest conducting this concert was Mr. Wfalter Minniear, founder and director of the O.P.H.S. Band for thirteen years. The band performed, with the Lionettes, at all football games. Included in the activities were several parades, including those for Homecom- ing, Boy Scouts, Christmas, and Cotton Festival, and the Columbia rodeo. The group participated in all festivals of the Louisiana Music Educators Association, includ- ing marching, solo and ensemble, and concert. The Ouachita band was also well represented in the Louisiana All-State Band and Orchestra. Sponsored by the American Legion, Pelican State acquaints delegates with the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of American citizens. I The students are kept busy learning about elections, the making of laws, and lthe duties of city, parish, and state officials. l But Pelican State is not all work, for delegates meet students from all parts yof the state, and they are provided recreational facilities by the university. The largest project completed by the club this year was the construction of a stage backdrop for the State J.C.L. Convention. Members also made scenery for the choir concert, gave an exhibit on the school Hi-Lites TV Program, made posters for school functions, and won first place with their homecoming float. Secreta ries The club is composed of girls from the Commerce Department who have chosen secretaryship as their career. Club Guest speakers and recordings on office procedure have been included in their agenda this year. Among the newest courses offered at Ouachita High School is Office Education. Through this medium young men and women are trained in office work while earning weekly wages. The class in O.E. meet for a 90 minute period each day under the leadership of Mrs. O. Willis, who places the students on the job and works with the employers. These students work a minimum of 15 hours a week after morning classes from 8 to 11:30 A.M. X J F0 CRO5 Junior Red Cross QUNQ The junior Red Cross this year aided the Ouachita Chapter of the American Red Cross in several activities. They made cookies and distributed them among convalescent homes at Thanksgiving and wrapped packages for the veterans' hospital in Alexandria. The Thespians have participated in various dramatic activities during the school year. V In addition to decorating a homecoming float, they also assisted with the assembly program which entertained the court. The annual Christmas play for the student body was an annual project of the group. Festivals and tournaments at Northwestern and at Northeast, and a coffee for the faculty and friends were other I activities of the Thespians. The I96O Football Season Ouachita's Lions, led by Head Coach Bob Ellen, began this year by winning five of their ten scheduled games. The Lions swept to easy victories in their first five games, winning them all by shut-outs. Jonesboro-Hodge fell by a 12-O score in the season's first game. In their next tilt, the Ouachita Eleven surprised sportscasters by upsetting the Ruston Bearcats, 13-0. Victories over Wfoodlawn, Bastrop, and Haynesville extended the string to five. Against some of the best teams in the state, Ouachita played well, but lost their next five games. They fell to Fair Park, West Monroe, Byrd, Bossier City, and Neville. A parade through downtown Monroe and a football victory over Haynesville climaxed the day and brought down the final curtain on the gala occasion. However, the group failed to progress as expected and finished in a tie for last place with a 3-7 record in conference play.
