The Lions, after several lean years, began to show signs of a comeback this year by winning four of their eleven scheduled games. Their first game, a 13-6 win over Homer, was a proper christening for the new Ouachita stadium. The following three weeks, however, brought defeat as they fell to Jones- boro-Hodge, Ruston, and Pineville. The season's second and third triumphs came in succes- sion as both Bastrop and Haynesville toppled to the Lions. Fair Park and West Monroe turned the tables and Ouachita fell twice more. Byrd's Yellow Jackets didn't fare so well. They fell as the Lions' fourth victim. The following week, the Lions lost to Bossier City where they met a strong opposition. The traditional Ouachita-Neville game completed the season making seven losses for Ouachita. Outstanding players among Coach Ellen's Lions were Rex Carter, Harold Moore, and Tommy Crowe. However, the boys failed to progress as was expected, and they lost the remaining seven games. ln nonfonference play, Ouachita fared much better, winning eight of fourteen games. Even though the team's win-loss record was low, there still were several exceptional players on the team. As is traditional, the identity of Ouachita's Home- coming queen was revealed at a student assembly on the morning of the game. A pep rally and a skit followed the presentation, setting the pace for the homecoming activities. ln the afternoon, the queen and her court were the main attractions in a parade through down- town Monroe. Before the crowded stadium at the Homecoming game with Haynesville, the queen made her en- trance onto the field on the beautiful float dedicated to her. The queen's maids followed close behind riding in convertibles. After being escorted across the field, the queen was crowned by Superintendent W. W. Ward. The queen and court were given field-side seats from which they viewed the final phase of the homecoming activities. A win over Haynesville 9-7 climaxed the day's festivities. Junior Red Cross Fall of '58 found members of the Junior Red Cross busily making and executing plans for their year's activities. Viewers of the annual Homecoming parade this year saw that the group had decorated an attrac- tive float for the occasion. Cookies baked at the cookie-bake at Thanksgiv- ing were taken to the homes for the aged in this area. As is customary, members collected pecans for the Veterans Hospital in Alexandria. Key Club During its twelve years of existence, the Key Club of Ouachita has excelled in the development of character, scholarship and leadership-its main ob- iective. The Key Club is a service club sponsored and di- rected by the local Kiwanis Club. For a boy to be- come a member, he must have a high scholastic standing, be recommended by the faculty and must be voted into the club by the members. This year the Key Club helped distribute March of Dimes coin collectors in business establishments, sponsored a school wide hayride, brought the Hall of Fame to our present school, brought a new mem- ber into the Hall of Fame, and sold soap to help finance a trip to Memphis, Tennessee, for the La- Miss-Tenn.
