Through the pages of this book we have endeavored to make your journey an exciting adventure, one that will become a happy memory in years to come. To conduct us safely over the trail in search of a lion, the leader of the expedition has engaged the services of an experienced guide fa Ouachita-ite in disguisej. We know that Mr, Hunter will not bag his game, because, here at Ouachita, the Lion is the symbol of the loyal spirit which will live forever in the heart of every native. But, grab your hat and camera, and let's join the safari as it stalks the Lion through our school. 2 X Z 3 fx! Page 46 'iLet's make our first stop on the trail in the English Department, for, who knows, that elusive lion may be lurking in the room where Mrs. Aydel Foreman is teaching speech classes. g'Nope! No place for a lion in there-too much going on-work on the set for the senior play, lessons in make-up, etc. The shouting? Oh, that's an Orson Welles record of Anthony's speech arousing the people against the conspirators - don't you remember studying fulius Caesar when you were in school? It's plain to see that there is no lion in Miss Lann's room-no, this isn't a biology class. She is teaching Poe's poem, The Raven, to a junior English Class. Now, right around this corner, we might luck-up on your prey. OOPS-sorry, Miss Smith, we realize a lion and The Ancient Mariner don't mix. We'd better not disturb Miss Wall-306, for she is busy explaining Macbeth to her seniors, and I'm sure it is too deep for us lion hunters. Say, Guide, I believe we're at the end of the trail at last! Doesn't the sign across the way say 'Lion's Den'? , interrupts the hunter. Oh, yes it does, but that isn't the lion you're hunting. That is the home of 'The Ouachita Lion,' and a lion would have to be very brave to venture in there, for the joumalism students are trying to make the deadline for the school newspaper. S'The Roarer is very important in these parts. Sponsored by the Senior Class, it is published by the Journalism Department. Mrs. Dorothy Hornbeak, editorial sponsor, and Mrs. Sarah Hollingsworth, business sponsor, share responsibility for its publication. 'SMembers of the editorial staff are selected according to scholarship, leadership, depend- ability and interest. L'Oh, they are the ones that dig in and collect, organize and edit material for the book, ventures Mr. Hunter. Th 1956 Roarer RONALD NICHOLS Business Manager E Page 48 Correct! Now the business staff, composed of six seniors, treks around industriously on the trail of much-needed and all-important ads. The senior who bags the most ads is made business manager. How interesting! these people have quite a job. But say, I wonder where the lion has gone? There he is, heading for the 'Lion's Den' fthe Ouachita Lion staff roomj. Let's go, Mr. Hunter! EDITORIAI. The staff of the Ouachita Lion consists mainly of members from the Senior Class who have had one or two years of journalistic experience. Step right along, M1'. Hunter, for your lion trail is getting hot, and it is leading you straight to the choir room, our first stop in the Music Department. But before you barge in, I'll tell you a few things about this depart- ment and its activities. Although this is Mrs. Hearne's first year as choral director, she has carried on in true Ouachita tradition, and has presented some well-trained groups. The choir, 48 strong, has performed for many social and civic organiza- tionsg they have also appeared on church, school, and 'l'.V. programs. Selected members represented Ouachita in the All-State Choir that entertained at the Louisian Teachers, Con- vention last fall. Luther Burney, the tall bass on the back row, and Sharon Thomisee, the pretty soprano on the first row, were chosen as members of the National Choir which sang for the National Educators' Convention in St. Louis this spring. The plaque? Oh, the choir won that for their Superior performance at the annual Music Festival in Ruston. ibWdfL',1 the birdie, All-Staten. S., Social Science Here we are on the second floor, the home of the sub-freshman classrooms, and the last stop on our safari. I can tell with one glance, Guide, that there's no lion here. But since we are here, tell me about the small fry natives here at Ouachita. 6'This is the third year that the eighth grade has been housed in the high school building. Five teachers teach this group of 260, who showed true school spirit by leading in the March of Dimes drive for the second consecutive year. You know, Guide, the natives here are mighty active in school work and activities. Yes, I'm mighty impressed with the whole works. They have spirit and spunk and a willingness to work and co-operate. Maybe it,s a good thing I didnlt find their Lion, for they need him to keep their spirits high and their loyalty to their school deep-rooted. You're right, Mr. Hunter! I was sure you'd have a change of heart when you discovered our secret. Yes, I say our secret, for I am a disguised Ouachita native, and our secret is really very simple. It's just this: you could never, not in a million years, bag our Lion, for he lives deep in the hearts of every true Ouachita native. We still have five minutes before parade time Page 120 xl uw. mrrln ru flflfl Il lmrlzfi A ' mwlm. lfw, Rlnsul.
