One by one the pieces fit together as the student progresses, and, after five years, all of the formerly scrambled pieces have fallen into place and the sub- fresliman emerges as a well rounded personality, his foundation laid for his future career. classes activities features junior high advertisments As an expression of gratitude: for thc superior job hc has donc during' his six years at Ouachita, and as a tributc to his kindness and his understanding of all students with whom he comes in contact, we, the Senior Class of 1955, fondly dedicate thc 1955 Roarer to our principal, Mr. I. C. Strickland. The 1955 school session was opened at Ouachita Parish High School in a npletely remodeled building. The Roarer is intended to present curricu- lar and extracurricular aspects of student life and activities at O.P.H.S. Members of the editorial staff are chosen according to their qualifications in leader- ship, scholarship, dependability, and interest in school activities. It is their duty to collect and edit material for the Roarer, to make decisions, with the help of their sponsor, concerning such matters as the plan of the book, kind and type cover to be used, and to decide to whom the book will be dedi- cated each year. The business staff is composed of the six students who obtain the greatest amount of money from the sale of advertising for the yearbook. The Roarer is dependent upon the sale of ads, student subscriptions, and sale of pictures for money to finance publication. 1955 R0 RER JOHN LOLLEY, BUSINESS MANAGER BUSINESS STAFF Billie Bayne, Grove Fields, Nettie Bacle, Betty Graham, Chester Todd, John Lolley. The first and last pages are devoted to newsg the second, to features and editorials of timely interest to the readersg the third, to sports events. Columns such as Up and Down the Halls, Jungle, The Stalker, Club Column, Kourt Kapers, Diamond Dope, JIM CORRY, BUSINESS MANAGER Mousie, Cubs' Corner, and others, give the students a chance to voice their opinions. In addition to selling student subscrip- tions, the Lion supports itself by selling ad- vertisements to businessmen throughout the city. It is circulated by interested students who have a third period study hall. Proof of the success of the Lion is the fact that for the past six years it has re- ceived the International Honor Rating, highest award of Quill and Scroll Critical Service for high school newspapers. Mem- bers of this Critical Service have commented favorably on the complete news coverage and outstanding feature writing. 1955 LIO CIRCULATION STAFF Billie Bayne, Maxine Grubbs, Lucy Kleinschmiclt Ann Edwards, Patsy Doane, Lanis Pettit, Jo Luton Lorene Arrant, Willie Wiggins. Jackson. For the past two years, girls of Ouachita have been included in trade school courses. Last year training in practical nursing was begun, and this year the enrollment of girls taking this course has risen considerably. Training in automobile, radio-television, refrigeration, electric, and aircraft engine repair work, and mechanical drawing is offered to the boys who wish to major in any of these skills. Students are required to attend trade school for three straight hours every day, and may complete their training in three years. ,leptin David 7wlI017lH.ti?Wl'Idll1Q Page 60 F , NGHIMW fx ga w..W.,v,1 N . , rf- ' -EM U W M ' ' Q :axis E522 W! -P , ,K Q rt. ,A W ww ,gi-j?x M ..,,,, Q 1w' 195 'P YH 1 3-'---' ,b, Yi 3,4 gf? fp - 5 3 Y 'M if Q1 'ff Y gA XV, 1 . 3 ,WN ig AQ Wg 2 MNWN ,fu r M ' . ss. As in preceding years, the ensemble has had a busy and exciting year with performances on school assemblies, for Civic Clubs, Garden Clubs, and at the Christmas and the spring concerts. The main activity of the year for the ensemble was participating in the All- State Chorus which sings each year for the Louisiana Teachers, Convention. In the spring, Ouachita members joined All-States Chorus members from other parts of the state in New Orleans to perform at the National Music Educators' Con- ference. A special feature of the year was performing for the English group at the State Teachers' Convention held in Monroe in November. Because of the large number of members in the Mixed Ensemble, they were not qualified to enter the District Music Festival at Northeast Louisiana State College this spring. As a result of this, the boys' and the girls' ensembles entered as separate groups. For the rendition of 'fCalm Be Thy Sleep, the Girls, Ensemble received a superior rating at the festival. Solos were also sung by the members. The Boys' Ensemble sang the selection Stout Hearted Men, by Sigmund Romberg at the festival and was rated superior. This was their only performance other than with the Mixed Ensemble. The Girls,, Boys', and Mixed Ensembles have gained a reputation for being among the finest vocal groups in northeast Louisiana. Band is one of the most active organization at Ouachita. Beginning its activities before the school year starts, the band prepares for the coming football season by summer march- ing and practice. Ouachita's band lends color and spirit to the football season by giving its support to football games, pep assemblies, and parades. Other band activities consist of playing at assemblies, pre- senting Chirstmas and spring concerts, attending the Louisiana State Fair, and participating in the annual Music Festival. The band was one of two Louisiana bands invited to the Cotton Carnival in Memphis this spring. To raise money for their activities, the band members, with the aid of the Band Boosters, a group of parents of band mem- bers, hold money-making projects. This year a chicken-spaghetti dinner, a minstrel show, and a chili supper were included in the projects which aided the band financially. ERNEST DUPUIS Drum Major O.P.H.S. These girls were a colorful attraction on the football field during the season. Besides being at every pep meeting and marching in parades, the O.P.H.S. cheerlead- ers attended most of the basketball games. Be- fore every home game the girls did a splen- did job of decorating the football field. The cheerleaders began the season this year by attending summer camp on the M. U. campus in Dallas, Texas, where classes in cheerleading and acrobatics were conduct- ed. All in all, the Ouachita cheerleaders, un- der the sponsorship of Mrs. Joy Johnson, did a wonderful job in keeping up the school spirit. Any girl who lives up to the Y-Teen standards may be a member. The Y-Teens serve their community as well as their school. By folding TB seals at Christmas for the Ouachita Tuberculosis Association, and by co-sponsoring the Easter Sunrise Service at Memorial Cemetery, they served their community in a worthy manner. This year the Y-Teens served as ushers and guides at the annual O.P.H.S. Open House, and members escorted a member of the faculty to the Valentine Tea held in the school cafeteria. At the World Fellowship Tea, the Y- Teens sent searfs to many of the foreign countries and exhibited the ones they had received from odier countries. The Y-Teens also gave a Christmas Holi- day Dance, a skating party, and visited the Y-Teens in Shreveport on April 2. The Roarer Staff Wishes to express its gratitude for the Wholehearted co-operation they received in preparing the l955 Roarer. We especially would like to thank the friendly, community-- minded businessmen, Whose patronage went a long Way to- ward Roarer publication. The O. P. H. S. faculty was called on many times for aid, and the staff found the faculty members ready and Willing to do their part. The support given by various clubs of Ouachita made the staff more determined than ever to publish a yearbook Worthy of such support. Mr. and Mrs. Daly used their superior skill in making top quality pictures .for the senior and the feature sections, and Dar- rell DeMoss, National School Pictures' representative, Was, as usual, most patient and co-operative with the many underclass- men who came before his camera. Shreveport Engraving Company and Quality Printing Com- pany have combined their respective talents With our amateur efforts to make this yearbook a Worthwhile publication. The Senior Class, who sponsors the Roarer, is sincerely grateful to this unselfish group of people who have Worked so hard to make possible this souvenir of their high school days Page1159 .
