Not only does he show a keen interest in all school activities, but he possesses an out- standing ability to understand students and their problems, which has won himifthe re- spect and admiration of the entire school. WILLIE MAE WAFER Since much of our school life centers around the office, we often call upon Mrs. Wafer, our friendly, efficient office secretary, to help us. In her two years at Ouachita, Mrs. Wafer has proven her willingness to help and her desire to co-operate with all school activities. a MRS. MARIE FRAZIER The good, wholesome meals served in our school cafeteria each day are prepared under the supervision of our expert dietitian, Mrs. Frazier. Assisted by a capable staff, Mrs. Frazier prepares and serves meals to approximately 1400 students in a period of an hour and a half. 4 MRS. PEARL REYNOLDS Mrs. Reynolds, school nurse, is in charge of the clinic at O.P.H.S. When students need treatment for minor illnesses or scratches and bruises, she is always on hand to minister to them. In addition to giving us physical aid, Mrs. Reynolds also gives our spirits a lift with her cheerful personality. Iasses Page 17 The Senior Cla OFFICERS Gilbert Vascocu . . . . . With an offense that rolled up a season total of 201 points to their opponents' 170, Coach Jim Hodgin's Lions played a schedule that in- cluded some of the top teams in Louisiana and Arkansas. The close scores in many of the games showed the fierce- ncss of the competition, as the Ouachita team proved it could hold its own with the best. An added attraction this year was the renewal of com- petition with Neville High School. The game, which was play- ed before nearly seven thousand fans, proved to be one of the best of the year. In a hard fought battle Neville emerged the winner 14 to 6. Lion halfback Frank Mobley received a wrist- watch for sportsmanship and ability shown in the game. At the end of the season the team was entertained by the Lionettes at the annual banquet. The highlight of the program was the presentation of trophies to outstanding players. Those honored were: Jimmy Berry, best linemang Jerry Sikes, best sportsmang and Frank Mobley, best all-round player. MANAGERS James Moore Randolph Cage Shown below are Norman Goza and Frank Mobley as The Lions, playing superb ball, rolled over the Haynes they stop Ruston's Barham in a game which saw Ruston ville Golden Tornado by a score of 2? to 14 Below 15 upset the favored Lions 34 to 7. Lions, showing a potentially great offensive and a formidable defense, smashed the Homer Pelicans to the tune of 48 to 14. At the right is Frank Mobley, as he breaks loose for one of three touchdowns he chalked up that night. Page 70 Renewing football rivalry, the Lion and Tiger grid machines battled to a scoreless first half. The Neville Tigers then roared back in the second half to score two touchdowns to the Lions' one, giving them a 14 to 6 victory. Shown at the left is Jerry Sikes, Lion quarterback, as he gets off on a heartbreaking touchdown jaunt that was called back. Avenging' the 33 to 0 setback of last year, the Lions rolled over the Bossier City Bearkats 32 to O, lacking one point reversing the score by which they were defeat- ed. Shown here is Norman Goza, Lion halfback, as he smashes off tackle to score. RESHMAN FOOTBAL The freshman football squad, under the direction of Coach Ray George, won only one game, while dropping three during the past season. The cub offense gathered a total of 48 points to their op- ponents' 71. In spite of the percentage of losses, the team showed promise, as they gained valuable knowledge and experience. Many of the boys showed capabilities of varsity play, and much can be expected from them during the remainder of their high school years. Seated: O'Neil, manager. Johnson, Track Coach Coach Johnny Johnson, in his second year as track coach, was very satisfied with the showing made by his team during the 1952 season. Competing in numerous rallies over the state, the Lions made a reputable showing wherever they appeared. Although it has been only four years since track was revived at Ouachita, in- terest has grown until now it is one of the major sports at the school. At the close of the sason last year the team attended the state rally at Ruston. It was the first time Ouachita had been represented at the state meet for the past six years. As Coach Johnson opened practice for the '53 season, he found some 90 candi- dates on hand. With five returning lettermen the teams shows much promise for this season. For the second yea: an intramural track meet was held on the Northeast Lou- isiana State College campus. 3 Page 72 AT OUACHITA work on sprznts dlex zn dzstrzct laxt gear clears a low hurdle gBottom leftj Bla zer and Barley were outstand Bottom rlght Versatzle Frank Mobley placed zng relay men last year zn state track meet last year Page 73 QTop, lefty McMullen, Cook, Mobley and Goza fTop, rightj ferry Brossett, second in low hur- , 1 5- ' l ' ' C J l l l 1953 BASKETBALL Seatcind, left to right: James Moore, Bill Shepherd, Steve White, Wayne Chelette, David owell. Although starting the season with only one returning regular, the Ouachita Parish Cagers, under the direction of Coach H. H. Holliman, surprised everyone as they played fine ball throughout the season to capture the North Louisiana AA championship. During the 1952-53 season the Lion cagers were winners in 22 of the 30 games played. The conference race was one of the closest in recent years, with the Ouachita team gaining the title in the last game of the season by a 43-35 victory over Bossier City. Ouachita completed an 8 won, 2 lost record in conference play. The Ouachita team, lacking the height of teams in recent years, featured a hustling and well-balanced quintet. The Lions sank a total of 1502 points to their opponents' 1286. Two members of the team, Walter Bennett and Larry Barnes, were honored at the seasonis end by being selected for the All- Conference team. The Lion team qualified for state rally which was held March 5 and 6 at Lafayette, but were eliminated by a strong Bolton five, 68 to 57, in the first round of play. Coach Mary Lea George showed one of her strong'- est teams in recent years as the sextet compiled a string of 19 victories against only 4 defeats. The sharp- shooting girls hit the hoops for 1026 points, while holding the opposition to only 755. Although forced to share the North Louisiana crown with Haynesville, as each team won 5 and lost 1, the girls gained revenge with a 54-46 win over the Tor- nado in the semi-finals of state play. Additional honors came to the team as three mem- bers of the squad gained berths on the All-State team. Those making the team were Charlotte Brown and Edith Donald, guards, and Joyce Dumas, forward. NATALIE MAY Cheerleader Sponsor CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders began practice in July this year by attending a cheerleader camp on the S.M.U. campus in Dallas, Texas. This was the first time in the history of Ouachita that cheerleaders had ever attended a camp and, as a reward for the many hours spent prac- ticing, they were named the Best All-Round Cheer- leader Squad. With new yells and acrobatics they had learned, the cheerleaders returned home with plans to boost the school spirit to new heights. On the football field they were in the eye of every fan as they kept up the school spirit even in defeat. Cheering at basketball games was something new to Ouachita's ten cheerleaders this year, but they joined in enthusiastically to lead the teams to victory. This was a distinct honor in that only a few schools in the United States were selected for this good will project. MIXED ENSEMBLE Page 91 GIRLS' ENSEM The girls' ensemble has also had an active year. Their performances for civic club programs and luncheons, featuring popular and semi-classic numbers, were received with much enthusiasm. A further expression of their versatility was demonstrated at District Music Festival, when, in addition to their ensemble work, they participated in superior solo and trio activities. The boys' ensemble has taken its share of the lime- light in most of the musical activities of the three ensembles, and has proved a special favorite with the Ouachita sudent body. Together with the girls' ensemble they made several state-wide musical broad- casts, but for the most part of the year they joined with the girls to do mixed ensemble work. Membership in this organization is based upon scholastic ability as well as upon the ind1vidual's character, leadership, and service to the school. A student who has maintained an average of B with no term grade below 85 becomes eligible for membership after the first half of his junior year. All seniors with a similar average are eligible. This year 38 members, 17 seniors and 21 juniors, were inducted. Activities for the year include such projects as publishing the Student Directory and sponsoring the annual Valentine booth. In past years the organization has sent clothes and shoes to Korea, and books to wounded sol- diers in Japan. This year the club sent money to f1ood-rav- aged Holland, and, as its local project, present- ed a portrait of Thomas Jefferson to the school. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION The Distributive Education program is a coop- erative part-time training program covering all the various phases of work involved in moving goods and services from the producer to the consumer. It involves a cooperative relationship between the school and the retailers and wholesalers of a com- munity whereby boys and girls sixteen years of age or older may secure training for worthwhile careers in retailing and other distributive occupations. The students attend school in the mornings, tak- ing a distributive education class and other high school subjects, they are placed in part-time em- ployment for directed work experience in the after- noons. Instruction in the distributive education class is correlated with the work experience phases of the training program. The local distributive education club is an or- ganization of those students enrolled in the dis- tributive education classes. The Distributive Educa- tion Club of Ouachita Parish High School is a charter member of the Distributive Education Clubs of Louisiana and of America.
