Also, each section chose officers to represent a particular department. The annual Christmas luncheon, held December 23 in the grammar school, was the outstanding meeting. The speakers of the program were Mr. T. O. Brown, and Mr. Jack Hayes. Aubrey Hill . and Muriel Stevenson, former club presidents, and Miss Ruth Melzian were guests. T' Since the address given by Mr. Sam Davis of the Palace Depart- -3 ment Store was inspiring and interesting, the food delicious, the poems by Mary Graves Taylor and Muriel Touchstone amusing, the hi annual commercial students' banquet was a success, everyone said. . Mrs. George Moffett's Glee Club delighted the listeners with a K, musical program. . Guests of the banquet were Mr. T. O. Brown, Mr. Jack Hayes, 'Q Mr. C. W. Rhoads of Centenary College, Miss Taunton of Arcadia, l-,, Miss Ruth Melzian, and Dr. Jett of Monroe. Also, present were presidents representing the club for five consecutive years: Mrs. Harriet Todd, Aubrey Hill, J. D. Gilbert, and Fred Randow. 1 The commercial students, too, won honors for the school at the A rally. Members of the Hooks and Crooks club, a branch of the club, f have distinguished themselves this year by wearing the little Gregg X emblem pin. T The members of the Commercial Club enjoyed a picnic at Indian 1 Mound at their last meeting. fx' The growth of the club from 50 to about 200 is evidence that g S -g s 3,1 7 Miss Smith has been an excellent adviser for five years. Mr. Hartman, who has been with us for a number of years, has mapped out a splendid basketball team each year. Mr. Hayes, who has coached volley ball each year, for eight years, has not failed to produce champions. Although this year was Mr. Rush's first with the Ouachita Parish High School, he has made one of the best records the school has known. Mr. Rush took the football team with green material, except for a few letter men of last year, and put out a team that was in the play-off for the State championship ' Coach Rush also had only green material in track yet he put out a team that won first in the North Louisiana Rally and made an excellent showing in the Tri-State meet at Shreveport 4 8 il' xx Y L we 955. The Jungle Kings won seven games, tied one, and lost one in the play-off for the State championship. With a backfield of Bunny Kennedy, Pete Rasberry, Roland Brown, and Tenille McEnery and a line of Shelby Calhoun, Ivy McDonald, Durnell Witt, MacMath Givens, Raymond Masling, Bill Bickham, and Tom Pete Godwin, the Lions were hard to stop. Ouachita had a few reserves who showed ability in almost every game. The Lions advanced to the play-off for the state championship, only to be defeated by Homer, the state champions. Although most of last year's championship team will be graduated, Mr. Rush, since the spring session, has been busy molding a smart squad from green material. A Brooks Owen will take Roland Brown's place at halfbackg Tennelle McEnery, Pete Rasbury, and Nelson Bland will finish up the backfield. Pete Godwin, Durnell Witt, Bill Bickham, of the 1930 fighters, will join Kermit Youngblood, John Franklin, Lane Ebert, and Billy Givens in blocking plays of opponents. A few of the players who will join the supporting role of the first string, and who will probably see enough service to win their letters are: Harry Strom, Orian Howe, Red Dill, David Pace, Ernest Hinton, T. Although his next year's men will be green, the Foac-h's skill will turn raw material into possible champions. Roland Brown, known throughout the State of Louisiana as one of the best forwards ever put out by a high school coach, is an all-state man. Shelby Falhoun, center, was a good shot at making the two points count. Tenelle Mc-Emery is the small boy that puzzled the players of Louisiana by the way he shifted through them and made two points with every try. David Pace and Asa Albright were the two fellows who kept other teams from making: mints. l William Wenner and Kid Hershel were two sure guards who were able to drop the balls through the loops, and block opponent plays. Although this is the first year the school has had a real track team, Mr. Rush coached boys fwho knew next to nothing about hurdling, jumping, vaulting, and sprintingl so that they won the North Louisiana track meet and gained a fine score in the Tri- State and State meets. ' Brooks Owen, who set the record in low hurdles for North Louisiana, won first in both high and low hurdling, In the Tri-State he repeated his feat. He was one of the sprinters in the relay race which captured a first in North Louisiana, and a second at the Tri-State gathering. Tommy Zeagler spotted a first at the North Louisiana Rally. At Ruston, MacMath Givens plunged to second in the hundred yard dash, and to third in the two-twenty, at the Tri-State he, again, gleaned a third. Roland Brown, a member of the relay team, won second in the broad jump at the Ruston meet. The relay team, Tooms, Witt, Brown, and Owen, placed first in the North Louisiana fracas, and second at the Tri-State. Owens, Brown, Givens, and Witt, who journeyed to Baton Rouge, took a second and two fourths. ea .3 U' I NJ A E E EN - o ,.?ixf1- 4 i ,uri ,,,. . The team this year, Cyril Yancey, Alvah Learned, Hollis Venable, and John Strahan, drove balls across the net with accuracy. Cyril Yancey won the North Louisiana championship last year, he was nosed out this year after working his way to the semi-finals. Alvah Learned and Cyril make up the team of doubles. This couple wone the North Louisiana Rally for two years straight and placed in the State Rally. Hollis Venable and John Strahan are two valuable tennis players, although they do not play the game as well as Cyril and Alvah.
