Our trail stretches ahead. We look backward and see the winding road that has brought us here. We look forward toward a limitless future waiting just around the bend. Gratefully we remember those who first tread Ottum- wa High School’s path. They established her traditions and blazed the trail for us. Humbly we pick up our packs and walk purposely onward. There is much that still must Ik- done, and the trail is beckoning. 3 4 rarafi To love pure and chaste from afar. 5 6 That the world will lie peaceful and calm. 7 8 And the world will be better tor this. That one man scorned and covered with scars still strove with his last ounce of courage— 10 To reach the unreachable star! The Senior Class of ’69 Can Now Cast a Look Behind and See That the Past Was but the Beginning of a New Beginning and All That Was . . . II T' 12 Faculty Ottumwa’s Central Administration and The educational program of the community must lx focused on tlu- needs, interests and abilities of all students as well as upon the needs of society. In this way, each individual can achieve the greatest self-realization and society can lx- perpetrated and im- proved through cooperative participation of effective individuals. Development of knowledgeable citizens with a desire to learn, a willingness to accept responsibility and an ability to adjust to the natural and social environment is essential to the continuance of our democratic way of life. The acceptance of this edu- cational program can best be achieved when all edu- cational agencies in our society share in the responsi- bility for total development of the individual; when parents, students, teachers, administrators, boards of education and others in the community work cooper- atively and harmoniously toward this goal. Bulldogs Go 4-4-1. Coach Chuck Harnisch’s much-improved Ottumwa Bulldog Football team finished the 1968 season with a 4-4-1 record, the best mark in four years. The Bulldogs finished third in the final season of the Little Six Conference. The Bulldogs used a balanced offensive attack and a sting)' defense en route to victories over Davenport Assumption, Muscatine, Mount Pleasant, and Oska- loosa. Quarterback Bob Ash became the second-best single season passer in O.H.S. history. His tosses to Mark Ogren, Garold Ritz, and Jack Williams ac- counted for 8 scores. Ash also led the Bulldog indi- vidual scoring with 5 touchdowns. Ottumwa High also boasted a strong running attack as guard Mark Russell and tackle Terry Martinson opened holes for speedsters Cal James and Jack Williams. The Bull- dog defense, led by Martinson, Ed Jacobs, and Rod Long, yielded the second fewest points in the con- ference. Highlighting the season was the naming of defen- sive end Ed Jacobs and tackles Terry Martinson and Rod Long to the coaches All-Little-Six first team. Receiving honorable mention were Mark Russell, Jack Williams, Bob Ash, Dave Dreger, Mark Ogren, Chris Smith, and Cal James. Several of these Bulldogs also received honorable mention on the various all-state selections. Although many lettermen will be graduating, a fine crop of juniors is expected to continue the Bull- dog's rise to power as a major independent in 1969. Ash drives for a touchdown. 124 Line: Garold Ritz, Mark Peppers, Max Donnelly, Steve Carr, Mark Russell, Terry Martinson, Mark Ogren; Backfield: Jack Williams, Calvin James, Robert Ash, Gary Merrill. There can lx- little doubt to any Bulldog fan that the 68-69 season will go down in OHS cage history. The Bull dogs were the most exciting and skillful team in years and have the statistics to prove it. Led by the quick hands and deadly eye of all-conference guard Stan Blew and the hustle and sure-shooting of forward Bob Hallgren. Coach Kramer s Clutch Kids compiled an 11-8 record and cap- tured the final Little Six Conference Championship. In their march to the title the Dogs won an unprecedented five of five road games. Bob Hallgren set a new school and conference free throw record by sinking an amazing 97 of 105 attempts. Hallgren also led the team in field goal accuracy with a cool .507. Hallgren certainly had no corner on precision as the starting six averaged .418 from the field. The Bulldogs committed only 11.6 turnovers a game, by far the lowest in recorded history at OHS. The Bulldog attack was characterized by balanced scoring provided by juniors Dennis Fisher and Dave Young and seniors Blew. Hallgren. Rick Rominger, Garold Ritz, and Gary betters. Stan Blew, a defensive specialist as well as leading scorer, was named to the Little Six All-Conference Team and more than once provided the spark needed to rally to victory. The fleet Bulldogs established themselves as a major power in the state after scoring an unprecedented sweep of southeast Iowa relay titles and an unmarred dual record. The thin- clads could do worse than a second in the tough Valley Relays, placing first in all other competition. Major victories included Little Six Indoor and Outdoor champion- ships, Osky, Cardinal (Newton), Fort Madison, and Ottumwa relays championships. The season was climaxed by a tenth place in the state meet. Few records remained unbroken by the sprinting Bull- dogs. Junior Greg Lintz won a state championship with a time of 9.9 in the 100 yard dash and a 1:30.4 time in the 880 relay gained a third place in the state meet. Records were also set in the 440 yard relay with 43.5, in the mile relay in 3:28.2 and the two mile in an 8:09.2 clocking. Seniors comprised the backbone of this year’s team, but several outstanding sophomores and juniors should provide an excellent nucleus for next year’s team. The team also tied for first in the Ottumwa Invita- tional, swept the Keokuk Quadrangular, and finished third in the Little Six and District meets. Tim Young, playing third and fourth singles, lost only one match. Bulldogs Fight Hard for ’6f Homecoming Plans for the floats, the parade, the coronation, the dance, and the game are all part of the excite- ment of O.H.S. Homecoming. On the afternoon of Homecoming a special as- sembly was held for the coronation of the queen, Debbie Brown. Sue Davidson was Princess and Nancy Carlberg, Debbie White, and Jan Mercer were attend- ants. Following the coronation the students assembled behind their class floats for a parade through down- town Ottumwa. The parade ended in Ottumwa Cen- tral Park where the floats were judged. The sopho- more class float was first, the senior class float second, and the junior class float third. A pep rally followed the judging. That night, at Schaffer Field O.H.S. played Keo- kuk. The Bulldogs fought hard, and the game was a tie. The events of Homecoming were climaxed by a dance in the gym with music by the Heritage” of Ottumwa. There the queen, princess, and attendants reigned at the dance which brought a close to a successful Homecoming. Sam Swain escorts Homecoming Queen. Debbie Brown. The Homecoming pep rally promotes school spirit. Terri relaxes before Homecoming. It's like this, Big AI. I smashed . . A crappy situation. Five overgrown dolls.
