Text from Pages 1 - 172 of the 1960 volume:

mpus O.H.S.—Today’s High School with Tomorrow’s Vision is in reality a city within a city. It has an unwritten code of behavior which is highly respected by every- one. This code is comparable to Ottumwa's Charter. At high school we have a legislative body- the student council. Members are elected by the student body. Mr. Jones, acting as mayor, and the teachers join together to advise the student council. The city’s progress is based on its curricular program. O.H.S. offers subjects that fulfill almost everyone’s plans. There are subjects to prepare those who are going to college, those who are going into vocations, and those who wish to specialize in work with their hands. These subjects cover a wide field of interest and careers. Extra curricular activities play an important role in high school. Clubs provide outlets for activities in these three major areas—social, recreational, and cultural. Clubs in themselves are social groups, but each club has a definite aim which is to further knowledge along some definite line. The Dramatic Club, Art Club, and Speech Club work in the cultural area. Pep Club, G.R.A., and Hi-Y Club are examples of clubs working in the recreational area. They help support good sportsmanship, promote school spirit and ath- letics. O.H.S. has a very good athletic program in football, basketball, and track. This helps very much in creating school spirit. Other extra-curricular activities include music, marching band, and orchestra. Seniors will always look back and remember this city within a city. They will remember its fine curriculum and the respect everyone has for this city. Juniors and Sophomores will uphold the respect of this city so they, too, can look back and remember their part with pride. OUR CAMPUS The Adams Building. In the halls. •-4 A haefer Field before the game. Pattern of the sun. All students entering O.H.S. are faced with similar problems, the first of which is initiation. But the problems which really affect us go much deeper than this. They concern our decisions and the challenges which are set before us during our High School years. We must work hard to attain our goals but for those who have the desire and do the work the old victory bell will surely ring and they will be re- warded with the deserved diploma, but more than this they will be rewarded with a better self. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Standing: Mr. Leighton Smith, Rev. Donald Gill, Mr. Chester Sedore, Seated: Mr. Dick Schlegel, Mr. Royce Carroll, Mrs. Martin O'Hara. David Jay, Superintendent Frank Douma. Mr. Leslie Thompson. Mrs. Ben Ravitz, Mr. As I extend a word of greetings to the students of Ottumwa High School, I should like to give them a message in regard to the importance of thoroughness in obtaining a high school education. I have just returned from a trip, the purpose of which was the study of the educational system of the Soviet Union. One thing we observed while studying those schools was the serious attitude of the students. In every class room the students showed an eagerness to obtain the most out of their studies. It was in this respect only that they surpassed our schools. I should like to see all of our students develop this same attitude and work to the best of their ability. Only in that way can we prepare ourselves for the problems that face us after we leave high school. Frank W. Douma Superintendent Frank VV. Douma lecturing on his trip to Russia. Principal V. A. Jones Some time ago the city of Ottumwa adopted the slogan, ‘Today's City with Tomorrow's Vision. We might rephrase that slogan for the senior high school and say that it is Today's Vision of Tomor- row's City. This can be done for two reasons and both of these reasons have to do with the way in which the high school student body has an in- fluence on the Ottumwa of tomorrow. First of all, as a little community of 1,300 stu- dents within the larger Ottumwa community, we can be a vital part of the activity of the present by our contributions to the welfare of Ottumwa today and everyday of the year. The solid academic work of our high school teenagers, the promotion of worthy social causes, the enthusiasm for new ideas and projects for the improvement of the school, and the work in the homes and busi- nesses of the community all contribute to making a good Ottumwa today. Ass’t. Principal Lewis E. Dye Miss Ida Blanche McCarroll, Mrs. Marietta Blackburn and Miss Jane Smith in the High School Office. Secondly, we can think of the high school as Today's Vision of Tomorrow's City in that our high school citizens will be the city citizens of to- morrow. The better we learn our lessons of citizen- ship today, the better will be our city of tomorrow. Our work of the past year in Ottumwa High School has been marked by many highlights for individual students and for our school. We can see how these accomplishments have made a good year and how they will contribute to a better future. Our high school and our community will benefit from the good which has been accom- plished. Iowa Raising a family four- teen hundred strong is a big job for our teachers, but it isn’t all work. They have their fun too, repre- sented here by one of their faculty coffees. These serve as an opportunity to get better acquainted and also as an outlet for some of the little exasperations which we build up inside them. There are always papers to be graded. Lectures are to be planned and presented. Experiments go on continuously in science classes. Problems are solved in woodworking. Standing: Mrs. Helen Champ, Mrs. Anna Penny. SENIOR CLASS Fame And Honor Is Our Cheer 1960 Is Our Year Miss Klodt, senior class sponsor, advising Mike Lyon As the 1959-1960 school year closes, we seniors must step out into the world on our own. In whatever path we follow, we will always remember with great appreci- ation the help and guidance given us by our teachers and counselors throughout our school career. We especially want to thank our wonderful class sponsor. Miss Klodt, for giving of her time and talents to help make the 1960 Senior Class one of the very best. Our most vivid memories will be those of our three years in O.H.S., for is was here that our basic plans for the future were begun. Our fondest hopes are that we have upheld our school tradition and that any contributions we may have made have helped to make O.H.S. a better high school in a community that looks toward the fu- ture when preparing its future citizens. In the years to come we will strive to fulfill our motto and we hope it will be heard ringing in the halls of O.H.S. Fame and honor is our cheer, 1960 is our year.” Senior class officers: Cindy Clark, Linda Brickey, Kerstin Friis and Carl VanderWilt. JUNIOR CLASS To many of us, this our Junior year, has been filled with joys, sorrows, pleasures, and hard work. This is to be expected for we, too want to contrib- ute our utmost to our thriving community, Ottumwa High School. We take pride in our school and look forward to a very fruitful Senior year. Looking back over this year we'll cherish many fond memories. Memories of classroom, football field, and stage lights will be ours. But we realize our future lies ahead. We are embark- ing upon the last plateau” of our high school career. We have some large tasks before us, but rest assured they will be carried on with the great- est of caution. We wish to express a deep and appreciative thank you” to our teachers and counselors who have so excellently guided us the past two years. Their confidence will help us attain our goals and uphold the precedent which had been set before us. Most of all, we wish to uphold our own honor- able tradition and say to you, Made of Spirit, Work, and Fun. We're the Class of '61' Junior Class Officers President, Tony Slutts; Vice President. We, as sophomores, entered Ottumwa High School in the fall and felt quite out of place with the many other students and large building. Everything was new; new teachers, new subjects, new friends, and new activities. It was up to us to make our decisions, good or bad. We looked to our upperclassmen for help, and they gave it to the best of their abilities, but still it was up to us to evaluate these ideas and each to decide for himself. This city within a city has provided a government by whose laws we have learned to abide. It has offered us a multitude of extra curricular activities, an extensive choice of academic and vocational courses from which to choose and plan our future, and a splendid staff of instructors to help further our education to the fullest. Our part as sophomores was challenging to us but we accepted the challenge and set forth to do our very best. We were challenged by our teachers to do good work in our studies. We were challenged by the clubs to find our part and do it well so we could work our way up to the time when we would be leaders. And we were challenged by this high school and its history to be one of the best sophomore classes that it has had. To those who helped us during those first few weeks and are continuing to help us. and for the general at- mosphere of acceptance which they have bestowed upon us, we would like to say a heart-felt Thankyou . We shall try our utmost to maintain the good school spirit and uphold the name of our school so that those who follow us can be as proud as we and those who have gone before us are to have attended O.H.S. Our memories we will cherish and our knowledge we will use for the betterment of all. Next year we hope to set a good example for the new sophomore class and help them as we were helped. And in conclusion may we say that we shall be always loyal and always true and very proud that we're the class of '62'! THE STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council, Little Six Advisory Council, and Safety Council. The O.H.S. Student Council is considered the main governing body of our city within a city. Through the Council, and the organizations in affiliation with it, more understanding and school spirit have been created both at home and away from home. This organization, sponsored by Mrs. James, is made up of seventeen elected members and the foreign exchange student as an honorary member. The purposes of the council are to strive to develop good school citizens, to aim for a greater spirit of democracy, promote harmonious relations throughout the school, stress good student teacher relationships, improve school morale, assist in the management of the school, and promote all things for the good of Ottumwa High School and the com- munity. The Student Council has many responsibilities including the club room, hall monitors, assemblies. Teen of the Week, victory bell, and the lost and found department. Mary L. Akerson, Jim Dull. Carol Eckley, Jean Mc- Williams, John Raney, and Harry Wing are the six students representing O.H.S. in the Little Six Advisory Council, in close connection with the Student Council. The object of this organization is to promote good sportsmanship among the schools in the Little Six Conference. Another club in affiliation with the Council is the Safety Council. The members work together to promote safety in our school. All in all, it is very evident that the O.H.S. Student Council is a very busy and important organization. SENIOR CLASS SONG Jim A. Dull Fame and Honor is our cry; We shall always hold this high. Fame and success shall be our aim; We shall never quit life's game. Always striving for the best; Always waiting for life's test. Fame and honor is our cry; We shall always hold this high. Memories bright and memories clear; We shall always hold them dear. Friends, fun and happiness; Memories true and memories blest. As we glance back over the years; We leave nothing but one sad tear. Memories bright and memories clear; We shall always hold them dear. Chris trys her luck at the piano while her American sister, Linda Helwig, watches. OUR EXCHANGE STUDENT I remember one of the first days at O.H.S. We had an assembly and Carl VanderWilt introduced me and told everybody to call me Chris and say hi' to me in the halls. That's what you all did and that made me feel just like one of you from the very first moment. When one is new, it is so easy to feel a little mixed up by all the new things, but you have all been so wonderful to me this year that I never did have any of that feeling. I want to thank my friends at O.H.S. for that and I want to thank my wonderful family who took care of me this year. You have made this the happiest year in my life. I also want to thank the Student Council which, by raising money, made my visit here in Ottumwa possible. The American Field Service works to increase under- standing and friendship among the different countries of the world. I feel that I have learned so much about the Ameri- cans and the American way of life and I am going to pass this understanding on to my family and friends at home. I hope that I have given you a clearer picture of my country too. This year has brought me so much. And at home I'll think often, maybe too often, of all the wonderful times I had here. I will think of all the games, the Variety Shows, the Christmas Pageant, the Assemblies, the dances and all the other events. If there is another exchange student in Ottumwa next year I only want to tell him that he will have a wonderful time and find great friendships, loyalty, cheerfulness and hospitality here in this typical American community. FUTURE NURSES A club for the medically inclined student here at O.H.S. is our Future Nurses Club, sponsored by Mrs. Zesiger. It was organized to acquaint pupils interested in nursing with that profession. Through this club, members learn of the opportunities for professional training, and they are also acquainted with general hospital administration. They learn of the honor of a profession wherein the object Mrs. Zesiger, Sponsor. Officers Row 1: Sharon Shafer. Linda Morrow, Sherry Gibson. Row 2: Sharon Bitner, Connie McBeth, Mary Baird. is to help comfort those in sickness and distress. The Future Nurses Club has raised money for a spring trip to the hospital in Iowa City and has organized working programs at two hospitals. The membership as well as the interest has increased this year. Where ever you find school spirit, you are sure to find the Pep Club. Promoting school spirit is the main goal of this organization. Pep Club consists of 60 girls working for their school. This year they were in charge of a pep assembly, sponsored two bus trips to out-of-town games, and sponsored the King of Hearts” dance. SPORTS Cindy Clark, Homecoming Queen Carl VanderWilt, student council president, crowns Cindy Clark Homecoming Queen. Coach Rod Rust issues football gear to Dave Magrane in 90 degree weather. Dave Magrane VARSITY FOOTBALL The football season opened on a note of guarded optimism, to say the least. Returning from a team that won 2 and lost 7 were two starters. Up from a sophomore team that won but one game came a group of foot- ballers from whom little was to be ex- pected, or so the experts said. The two regulars were given con- siderable help from several other sen- iors; and the juniors did more than a little. And, several sophomores showed the shape of things to come through their ability to break into the line-up on occasion. The Bulldogs suffered from injur- ies during the season, but gave a good example of Ottumwa spirit by coming back to win the final game handily. The season should be considered a big step—the best in a few years— and is also to be remembered as the muddiest in many years. BASKETBALL The Basketball squad is truly rep- resentative of our city because it con- sists of athletes from the North side. South side. East end, and West end of town. Together they comprise the fine O.H.S. Bulldogs Basketball Team. With a real desire and determin- ation to be on the winning side, they ended this past season with a better than average record. That record was 12 wins and 9 losses. They also fin- ished second in the Little Six Confer- ence with a 7-5 record. The squad proved that it takes teamwork to be successful. Good defensive play was one of the team's mainstays; however, they did outscore their twenty-one oppon- ents in total points. This year the Bulldogs advanced to the District meet in the State Contest. Mr. Humphrey, assistant and Mr. Christensen, head basketball coach. Phyllis Evans. Cheerleaders show it is an excit- ing game. Being a good Cheerleader in not an easy task. Long hours of practice is a must. The girls are completely self-supporting, earning the money to buy their uniforms and finding their rides to all the out of town games. Thanks to two real Bulldog Boosters, Mr. Cliff Kiple and members of the KBIZ radio staff, the girls’ parents were assisted in getting them to and from the many out of town trips this year. Row 1: Row 2: Row 3: Shark Club is a girls' synchronized swim group composed of approximately ten mem- bers from each of the three classes in school. Membership is on an ability basis, con- sisting of girls who are excellent swimmers with a desire to improve their skill and have fun doing it. All members become Red Cross Senior Life Savers at the end of their first year in the Club. Many assist with the safety and teaching in the summer swim programs in this and other communities. Most of the girls who go on to College and Universities with swim clubs in their extra-curricular programs become very active and take prominent rolls there. The annual water pageant is more than just a colorful show each year. In prepara- tion for the pageant the girls are trained to write water ballets, prepare suitable group and solo routines, design costumes and assist in the production. WRESTLING The future of Ottumwa High Wrestling teams seems some- what brighter than in the pre- ceding years. Coach Magrane sees promise in some of his soph- omore squad, such as Ted Lowen- berg, George McNabb, and Dave Leonard. The wrestling squads bright spot this year was winning the Little Six Mat Trophy. The loss of varsity lettermen Dean Plager, Larry Ellis, Gene Flanders, and Tony Lowenberg will present a challenge to the underclassmen next year. O.H.S. TRACK Track coach George Magrane talks with brother Dave. The O.H.S. track team has done well this year. They have upheld the high stand- ards and ideals set for them by previous track teams and have brought home many victories! This year our team participated in vari- ous track meets, including the A.A.U. meet at Drake University. They came in second in the Little Six Indoor Track Meet and eighth in the State Indoor Meet. They defeated Oskaloosa in a dual meet and placed second in the Oskaloosa relays. The team won a triangular from Bloomfield and Fairfield and sent several boys to the Drake Relays in Des Moines. The team pleased the home crowd by winning our own Ottumwa Relays by a wide margin. Congratulations for a job well done! Row 1: A1 Gilliland, Lavernc Vest. Tony Lowenberg. But elsewhere on this globe of ours it isn't simple at all; isn't possible, in fact, in many lands. Here we are with merchandise made the way we at Sears thought it should be, offering goods we felt you might like to see. There you are, free to select from Sears or not, as you yourself decide. We hope it will merit your approval; that we will be favored with your business. But, in any event both you and we have cause to rejoice in the fact that you can buy wherever you wish in the traditional Ameri- can way. iSa jadtbtt, jwataa edotpom- money Jaai ’ 121 East Main Street Dial MUrray 2-4511 Ottumwa, Iowa LOIS RAE WATTS SCHOOL OF DANCE Dancing is a Must in Modern Education 102 V E.
