NIKI SAYS GOODBYE There 1 a word people all over the world do not like. They call It departure-, or ‘the time to say Rood bye.- It Is the first time In my nfe I do not feel badly knowing that I have to say this word soon. Although I leave behind me good friends, people that I love and perhaps I will never see again. I am taking with me all the wonderful experiences I had In this country. In years that will come, though far away, I will always remember. I will have with me. the cordial smile of a friend, the good word of another, and the love and understanding that American people show to me from my first days here. Now. I know that there Is nothing better that life can offer, than the experience of living with people of another country. After my year In the high school. I do not understand the meaning of the word 'foreign- anymore. How con I name all these friends around me with the hard sounding word ‘foreign-? The American Field Service Is an organization which helped Europe during the First and Second World Wars. It still helps, but the help this time Is much greater. It Is the help that builds understanding and friend- ship among people, whom the ocean separates. Before I cross that ocean. I want to say to all of you a simple 'Thank you' for everything that you did for me. I do not find better words to express my gratitude than this Thank you-. I start with my nice family, my teachers, my classmates, and friends, and I finish with a little girl who asked me If she would be welcome to come over to my country someday. I am taking many wonderful things with me and there Is so much to say . . . About the way young people work together, about the responsi- bility they learn to have from their early years, their lessons as well as their games, with this wonderful feeling of unity. The clubs which work to make students better, each one in his own field: the Student Council, that made It possible for me to come here and that will go on working hard for the students of next year. Dear A.F.S. student of next year. When you come here, to O.H.8.. do not think of yourself as a foreigner. I«ook around you and see the smiling and friendly faces . . . I-ook at the lovely city of Ottumwa . . . They love you and they help you . . . They are your friends! Niki IjiIou Korinthou. 1R5 Patras. Greece This year, as in the past 36 years, the students elected 17 members to the Student Council, the governing body of O.H.S. The Council consists of six seniors, six juniors, five sophomores and the foreign exchange student who is the honorary member. The goal the council strives toward each year is to promote democracy by teaching the student initiative and leadership. Since it was founded it has interested the student in wholesome activities and has been promoting honor in the school and community. This year as in previous sessions of our governing body, they have sponsored a foreign exchange student, silent grace at lunch, worked out and executed a reserve system and promoted any other activities they felt would benefit the school and community. Mrs. James is the very capable advisor of the .Student Council. Judy Murphy. Carl VanderWilt. Doug Robertson.
