The Argus 1957 Ottumwa High School Ottumwa, Iowa School Song Ottumwa High will always be our school, And we'll ever love her true, We'll sing for her, we'll yell for her, And, my, what we won't do! We'll put her on the map. And see that she stands pat, For we love her true, we do. Chorus: North-side, south-side, and all around the town. We'll all join in together to root for O. H. S. In football, basketball, and every kind of sport. We'll cheer them on to victory For dear old O. H. S. Rah! Rah! Rah! for Ottumwa. Page 2 Presenting Staff Another year has passed. Another chapter of time has been completed. The sequence of the present is now in the past but will never be forgotten. We hope that we've succeeded in re- turning and also preserving your work, ideals, and mem- ories at O.H.S. We present to you the students and faculty of the O.H.S., your Argus Annual of 1957. DOUMA For more than 30 years Mr. Douma has worked to improve the school system. We salute our Superintendent of Schools. Students of Ottumwa High School wish to extend their appreciation to the Board of Education for their tireless efforts in managing our srhools. To these seven able citizens is entrusted the responsibility of sixteen schools for more than 7,500 students. It is through the inspections, careful studies, and sound judgment of the board members, working without remuneration, that our school system has maintained such high standards. They have kept our schools modern. We feel indebted to them for our education. Page 6 Faculty 1957 J. F. VAN ANTWERP Principal A. B. Hanover College M. A. Sponsor Class of 1957 To be or not to be. that is the question. This oft-quoted phrase was well representative of the 1957 senior, as each of us was obliged to make decisions which would shape our destin- ies. Conscious of the hastening time. 380 seniors, under the able sponsorship of Mr. Bob Thom- as. strove to make the very most of their final year of O. H. S. life. Term themes, football and basketball games. Friday evenings at the Corral. the tribulations of Macbeth, music and drama, college representatives' interviews, the Junior-Senior Prom.............all these were molded into the busy life of the average upperclassman. It seems but a very short time ago that we were confused little sophomores determined to conquer every new challenge presented. Out of stiff competition for student council, class officers, prized positions on athletic teams, and sophomore cheer-leaders emerged a true spirit of pride and loyalty among the new Bulldog rooters. This same whole-hearted spirit pre- vailed as industrious juniors added new honor and distinction to the fine record already estab- lished. Finally, as the zero-hour of graduation grew near, this feeling created a glad yet sad mood within the seniors. Although we soon will leave Ottumwa High, we take a part of it with us in our hearts and minds. The memories of three wonderful years will be cherished forever. KILLIAN — Advisor Class of 1958 The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. The Junior Class, the class of 1956 realizes the importance and veracity of the proverb, that we will be America's leaders of tomorrow. During the last two rewarding and successful years at O. H. S., we have gained a multi- tude of different and happy experiences that will send us on the road of life as proud and opti- mistic American citizens. Therefore, we have resolved to make an all out effort to attain unequaled goals in the differ- ent educational fields such as sports, scholarship, citizenship, and extracurricular activities. We have realized that our efforts have not been in vain for we have achieved honor in our numerous undertakings and are constantly elevating our goals and objectives so that we will continue to have new horizons to challenge and conquer. We have realized that much of our success and accomplishments have been made possible by the guidance and patient understanding of the faculty, our classmates, and class advisor. Mr. Killian. And we will again walk up the familiar steps at O. H. S. and down the halls to our class- rooms as Seniors, we will realize new goals and objectives that we will challenge with re- newed hope. Each of us will strive to uphold the challenge and honor of O. H. S. and feel proud of our- selves that we will be tomorrow’s leaders of America, the proud and confident leaders that our country needs. Page 45 Row I. Vicki Barnett, Ruth Baugh. I do not only want to say farewell to O. H. S.. as last year’s seniors did with their song, but I want to say farewell to all those who made my time here in Ottumwa such a gay and happy time. From the first day I arrived here they took care of me and helped me, to come over those first days of feeling ’’lost” and unnecessary. I want to thank them all. my nice family who took care of me for this year, my friends, who never left me alone, and my teachers, who tried so hard to teach me whatever is necessary to know nowadays. Certainly this year brought me a wealth of experiences and events, which I will take home with me, and I am sure will never forget. All the impressions of American life will be something I wUl tell my friends, relatives, clubs and all others, but one of the most important things is that I can say every American can be proud to be an Ameri- can. I especially want to thank the O. H. S. Student Council which made my visit here in Ottumwa possible in the first place. The Student Council works very hard for sponsoring the foreign ex- change students and everybody should help them, because they are bringing understanding and friend- ship between persons from different countries and that is one of the most marvelous things to do. If there is another exchange student here in Ottumwa next year and if he reads these lines. I only want to tell him that he will be very happy here and that he will find that Ottumwa is one of the best towns to live in. FRED STAMM The Teen of the Week” is a student coun- cil project. The council operates the reserve system for our school. Students of Ottumwa High School continued the tradition established in 1921 by electing eighteen members to the govern- ing body known as’ the student council. This body consists of six seniors, six juniors, five sophomores and the honorary member which is the foreign exchange student. The aim of the council is to promote democracy by teach- ing the student initiative and leadership. Since its origin it has progressed in interesting the student in extra curricular activities and improving the honor and welfare of the school. The governing body has continued to sponsor a foreign ex- change student, the reserve system, silent grace in the cafe- teria and promoting anything which will be a benefit to the school and community. These students are chosen for their excellent tone quality, correct pitch, and the ability to read parts accurately. From this large chorus are chosen several small vocal groups. Those groups are a girls’ quartette, a mixed quartette, a boys’ quartette, a girls’ sextette, and a boys' double mixed quar- tette. which contains nine members. Both A Mixed-Chorus and the small vocal groups have furnished many enjoyable programs for both school and civic affairs throughout the past year. Since most of the practicing of the small groups is done outside of school, other students seldom realize the time and effort which is spent to provide worthwhile entertainment. We sincerely appreciate the helpful and com- petent leadership of our director. Miss Aas. Page 72 Chorus Row IB Shirley Yates. Judy Rigler, Dee Inman. Paula Neil. Nancy Chapin. Any capable siting player in the city schools may join by invi- tation. Only the most advanced wind and percus- sion players from the symphonic band are asked to join. The few vacancies caused by graduation are filled during the summer music school rehearsals. The dress for all important events is formals and suits. This unique group, under the excellent dir- ection of Logan A. Zahn. studies a variety of com- positions from Bach to novelty numbers, but con- siderable emphasis is put on the classics. The past year has been a busy one for the Sym- phony. In the fall this group furnished music for the teachers opening workshop session and open house. Then followed the Christmas Pageant, spring concert, and graduation excereises. May 17-18 the Symphony participated in the Tri-City Music Festival held in Burlington and. as an added treat, went on a two day concert tour which in- cluded performances at Newton and Waterloo East High Schools, and Wartburg College in Wavcrly, Iowa. Also this year, the Ottumwa Youth Sym- phony had a large representation in the All-State Orchestra. Orchestra Row I. L vonne Newquist, Joy Wise, Marilyn Vander Wilt, Dick Covert. With these characteristics the sixty-eight piece O. H. S. Marching Band takes to the field. With pride and a high step, this group entertained spectators at football and basketball games and came home with a first at the Southeast Iowa Class A Marching contest. This same group marched in the homecoming parade for Miss Universe. Ottum- wa’s own Miss Carol Morris. As the winter snow melted, the activities of the marching band slacked, and the concert band takes the spotlight, first by presenting a concert for the Young People’s Series, followed by the An- nual Spring Concert in co-operation with the Orchestra and Chorus. To climax the years activities the ninety piece concert band moved to Burlington to take part in the annual Tri-City Festival with the combined bands of Davenport and Burlington. The director was G. C. Bainum, retired director of the Northwestern University Bands. The summer sun and rising temperatures close the doors of O. H. S.. and all these things become memories, until next year when again the O. H. S. Band will earn this comment from the people of Ottumwa: There goes OUR band!” Page 79 Speech Club President Phil Miller Treasurer Carol Wing N. F. L. To be a member, a girl must sign up in the fall and then take part in the initiation. The purpose of this club is to promote the teachings of nursing to girls who have an interest in the profession. It prepares the girls for any future nurses training they may wish to take. Each girl works at the Ottumwa Hospital at least once a week. The club has had the privilege of having talks given to them by the elementary school nurse and by the public health nurse. The speakers told the girls about the functions of the hospital and about the duties of a nurse. During the latter part of April, the club went to Cedar Rapids to a Future Nurses meeting. The sponsors of this organization are Mrs. Loren Coppoc and school nurse Ruby Holton. On nearly every Friday evening of the year, at 6 p. m. or thereabouts while most of the student body are just starting to prepare for whatever activity is planned for the evening, you may find these faithful servants at their stations and in readi- ness to escort any early comers to their seats, be it basketball or football game or a stage produc- tion. This club is currently in the process of becom- ing a part of Dramatic Club. This year for the first time members may earn Dramatic Club points as well as points toward a letter award. In addi- tion. all members are awarded one point toward Torch Club membership for each semester of ser- vice. Sponsors for the group this year have been Mrs. Dorothy K. Nickols and Mr. E. W. Tiede. Act- ing as student co-chairmen have been Karen Reeve and Charlene Prosser. As an usher these students are representatives of our school and can do much toward creating a favorable impression of our school upon the general public through their indi- vidual contacts with them. A great responsibility, specifically the name and reputation of our school, rests upon the shoulders of these students. Next year guests at our school activities will be escorted down the aisles by the O. H. S. ushers dressed in trim new uniforms of red and white. As a group who put in more than their share of faith- ful and loyal service, yet benefit from comparatively little recognition or praise, these girls rate as first class citizens of O. H. S. The aim of this outstand- ing club is to help the faculty and students in finding reference material for studies or books for leisure reading. Each librarian gives his time generously to the care and need of the library. The duties’of a librarian include: taking care of library slips, tvp- ing. filing, and checking out books. The Librarians' Club is under the excellent guidance of Miss Wiseman, who has just completed her first year at O. H. S. A. and leave them all afternoon free of charge. They also try to learn things in fields which interest them. Ballroom dancing, swimming, and modern dancing lessons were given. Y-Teens also participate in sports. They have a basketball team in a league. The Ottumwa group was host to 150 girls who attended the Annual Fall Conference which was held in Ottumwa this year. Senior High Y-Teens are also a very sociable group. They had several parties, a hayride, bunk party, co-op supper, and met with the other Y-Teens of Ottumwa. The Ottumwa Y-Teens sent Ann Peppers and Roberta Price as representatives to Washington D. C. last fall to the National Convention. Girls Recreation Association The Girls Recreation Association is composed of forty-five members this year. Its purpose is to promote interests of girls in athletics. The projects of the G. R. A. have been to sponsor the Homecoming Queen and Dance and also the Relay Queen. Belonging to the State G. R. A., they have attended “Play Days” at Chariton, Iowa and Ames, Iowa. They have participated in volleyball, basketball, badminton, ping pong, and soft ball tournaments. The G. R. A. girls have officiated at the co-volleyball games this spring. The officers serving this year were: President, Jeri Leasure; Vice-President, Carol Calhoun; Secretary, Sharon Schwartz; Treasurer, Judy Schooly. Page 107 Shark Club Front Row -Carol Wing. OFFICERS Sandra Patterson President Sura Blackford Vice President Patricia Nelson Secretary Linda Davis- Treasurer To become a member of Shark Club is an honor never forgotten. Only a few mem- bers are selected each year. The girls try out early in the fall and are selected for their ability and style. Although synchronized swimming may appear easy, the girls spend many long hours preparing for their annual pageant. The theme this year was Toyland”, a production which both young and old enjoyed. The pag- eant is a swimming production showing the public synchronized swimming and diving combined with song and dance routines. The purpose of Shark Club is to promote safety and fun in water sports. Each mem- ber must complete her Senior Lifesaving be- fore her first year in the club is over. The Shark Club is both directed and spon- sored by Mrs. Bard. She is aided by the officers’who are Sandy Patterson, president; Sara Blackford, vice-president; Patty Nelson, secretary; and Jean Willson, treasurer. The reason for this is because of the loss of many trackmen who graduated last year. At Iowa City they received sixth place in the state indoor A. A. U.’ meet. Again at Iowa City at the Little Six meet, they placed fourth. Then at their own relays, the Ottumwa Relays, they were third in team scoring. At the Oskaloosa Relays they were fifth. And as the Annual goes to press, we are hoping that the track team will come through with flying colors in their re- maining meets. Page 110 Row 1. Mr. Roth. Chase Mitchell. Dean Sinclair. Golf Golf is a sport at Ottumwa High School which really deserves recognition for its contribution to athletics. This year the team is continuing its fine record as a representative of our school. The golfers have a good beginning this year by winning the first three games. Although the annual must go to press at the beginning of the golf season we feel certain the team will maintain the fine reputa- tion it has established among Iowa high schools. In the first game of the 1957 season Ottumwa beat Fairfield by a score of 347 to Fail-field’s 371. Likewise, the Ottumwa club was victorious in a tri-city meet with Knoxville and Albia. The scores were Ottumwa. 338; Knoxville. 345; and Albia. 400. Our team also proved the better in its third game of the season by winning over Centerville with a score of 329 to 340 for Centerville. We wish Coach Roth and his team much success in their ensuing games. Page 111 Chase Mitchell. Larry Steeples, Bill DePrenger. Cheer Leaders Nancy Henderson, Lisa Harper, Mary Jo Dellinger, Judy Williams. Judy Murphy, Connie Larson, Carol Wing. Yea Red! Yea While! Yea Ottumwa. Fight! Fight! Fight! I ast in the athletic section of our book, but by no means least, are our cheerleaders. These girls devote a great deal of their time and energy to the betterment of O. H. S. Besides leading the cheering sections, the girls are active participants in many other extra- curricular activities. Nevertheless, our girls remain faithful to their job. following the school wherever it goes, and leading students in cheering our boys on to victory. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing intensity. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty.” —Daniel Burnham, Architect of the Chicago Plan, 1909 ★ ★ ★ ★ . . . such is our friendly counsel to the Class of 1957 John Morrell 2 Co. But elsewhere on this globe of ours it isn't simple at all; isn't possible, in fact, in many lands. Here we are with merchandise made the way we at Sears thought it should be, offering goods we felt you might like to see. There you are, free to select from Sears or not, as you yourself decide. We hope it will merit your approval; that we will be favored with your business. But, in any event both you and we have cause to rejoice in the fact that you can buy wherever you wish in the traditional Ameri- can way. yuaean edozycwa u ney tfaai ’ 121 East Main Street Dial MURRY 2-4511 Ottumwa.
