THOMAS. Adviser The second milestone for the class of 57” has now been reached. We have traveled more than halfway on the road toward graduation from O. H. S. This journey has been filled with re- warding experiences—both inside and out of the classroom. Each of us has pursued his individual ambitions, al- though our goals—honor and acknowl- edge—have been the same. Our efforts have not been in vain for we have achieved merit in scholarship, in citizen- ship. and in our extracurricular activi- ties. These goals could never have been achieved without the understand- ing guidance of the faculty, our counsel- lors and advisers, and our class sponsor, Mr. Thomas. As we enter our senior year at Ottum- wa High School, we are reaching an- other important steppingstone in our lives. Each of us will strive to uphold the honor of the school and the respect of the community. We feel confident the class of 57 may be proud of its future! We roamed the huge halls, finding the right room, hunting lockers, getting lost, but always there was some kind and helpful upper-lassman close by to give much needed assistance and we soon caught on. At first it seemed it would be almost impossi- ble to get acquainted with the teachers and their room locations but we eventually mast- ered even that. Lunch period in the cafeteria proved to be a real scramble, but the food was good and there was always enough for all. We were very busy, at first, choosing our activities and working hard to get into band, athletics, dramatics, speech or the activity of our choice. Things quickly fell into place and our first year at O. H. S. will always remain in our memoreis. We anxiously look forward to next year when we will be calm, cool and collected Juniors in good old O. H. S. Page 51 Sophumohsibu 195S Row I. Vicki Barnett. Margaret Bakke, Carol Burtis. Sharon Agee. S. Congress by the congress- men from his state, so is each student of O.H. S. represented by democratically elected members in the Student Council. Five of the eighteen memberships are filled from the Sophomore Class, six are filled from the Junior Class, and seven are taken by the Senior Class, one of these seven being onr ex- change student. This year's council has started, discontinued, and improved upon many, many things of which they should well be proud. They con- tinued the moment of silent prayer before each lunch period. A gong at the end of lunch signaling all to return pop bottles and dis- pose of lunch sacks, etc., has been added; and again this year our Student Council has spon- sered the exchange student. The accomplish- ment above among numerous others not men- tioned are proof of the fine choice we made when we elected our Student Council. Serving as this years officers were: Jim Roberts. Sure I always will love her and never forget her. just as I never will forget the wonderful year I spent in Ottumwa. I remember so well my first week, a little mixed up by all the new things I saw and by the rush of American life. I surely would have felt lost if I had not had such a nice adopted family and friends, who always tried to make me feel as a member of their big family. This year brought me a wealth of experience which I am proud to take home with me. And once home I will think very often, perhaps too often, of all the wonderful times I had. My first formal dances, the school plays, homecoming, the Christmas Pagaent, the Variety Show, the dances after the home games, all events I enjoyed so much. I really was im- pressed by the school spirit and cheers of all the students at the first pep assembly. I never thought I could be so excited by the sport events, were they football basketball, baseball- wrestling or swimming. I surely loved to cheer-up our O. H. S. Teams. I also want to take the opportunity to thank my teachers, who not only taught me a lot but made their lessons so interesting through discussions and readings. I learned not only to be interested in things and events of the past, but also, and especially, to study the present political, economical and social problems. For this I am thankful because through them I learned to understand the problems of other people. Really I think the American Field Service is a wonderful organization. The Ottumwa High School Student Council is a fine group to work so hard earning money to sponsor a foreign Student. I learned the value of personal contact between nations. I made friends, and nothing is more marvellous than friendship. If by any chance another exchange student will read these few lines. I only will tell him Be happy in Ottumwa just like I was. ■ I assure you, you too will have a swell time — FRANCIE Page 60 We have regular meetings We operate a lost and found dedpartment We call for silent grace at the lunch period We sponsor a foreign student We conduct the reserve system We choose the Teen of the Week Mrs. James is the very capable adviser of the student council. Coach The Ottumwa Bulldogs couldn't equal the good records of previous years this season. The Bulldog eleven played a determined game but it wasn't enough to overcome the stiff opposition. Ottumwa's best playing was done on the defensive half of the game, but our offensive wasn't able to push the scoring over the top. No games were lost without a tough fight. In our first three games we were handed de- feast; then we took our turn and beat Fort Madison. The next game was a loss to snap- py Keokuk team. Our second victory was a close one over Washington. The season came to an end with a string of three tough defeats. Our final record was two victories, seven loses. Membership in the Dramatic Club is easily obtained by any student who has a genuine interest in the advancement of Dramatic Arts and is willing to work. The prospective members perform before the Thespians and are then admitted to membership. Some students may not have the dramatic talent, however these people are just as important in a production as the actors and actresses, for a show could not possibly go on without the assistance of a number of crews. Each play production is made possible not only because of endless efforts of Mrs. Nickols and a well choosen cast, but also because of the cooperat- ion of many hard-working crews. The various crews which play an ex- tremely important part in the production of a play are stage, publicity, properties, make-up. wardrobe and ushers. The goal of every Dramatic Club member is to gain membership in the National Thespian Society. Thespian is an honor society which helps to promote the advancement of the Dramatic Arts in the school and com- munity. When a member acquires one hundred points, which is earned none too easily, he wins the privelege of becoming a Thespian. This year the Dramatic Club had four major productions: '•Time Out For Ginger”, a three act play presented in the fall; at Christmas time the Nativity was presented with the assistance of the vocal and instrumental music departments. In Feburary three superior one act plays. Love Errant. The Purple Door Knob, and The Maker of Dreams, were presented. To complete this year’s activities a three act play was presented early in May. Page 74 9n yyhwwAi 4 QhsmsL cdlamVL Who can say how much may come from putting into the hands of one student one really fine book? Who can estimate the far- reaching influence of a good library? Many of the finest hours in the life of Vesta Irene Gallanar were given to reading judging, searching out the best books to be bought for Ottum- wa students from the money allotted to the high school library. In the years she worked in the library the number of books grew steadily- the variety and excellence increased. Today on the stacks stands the evidence of Miss Gallanar's wisdom, her good taste, her consideration of the varying interests of the thousands of young people who through the years have come and still will come to use books in our library. With genuine appreciation we acknowledge the rich legacy she has left us. Page 76 CfoiiilynaA. 1955 PAge 76 There was no room for them in the inn. The Argus News, edited by a group of energetic students of journalists, is published at frequent intervals throughout the school year. The Argus News keeps us up to date on class news, club activities, sports events, and school news in general. Photographers and timely editorials add to the interest of the paper. Each issue is eagerly anticipated and all else is forgotten until it has been read from front page to back. An additional responsibility of the Argus News Staff is the edition of the Argus Daily. This includes announcements for groups, individ- uals. and the whole student body. It is read daily during the advisory period over the inter- communications system. This unusually active club has set as its purpose to stimulate an interest in speech and to provide opportu- nities in speaking for Ottumwa High School students. In no other activity can so many members take such an active part. Approximately 95 members helped with a car wash, con- cessions at games and the Variety Show, this year's main projects. Ottumwa can be proud of the fine record this group has made in contest work throughout the state. Humorous. Dramatic, and Oratorical Declam, Interpretive Reading. Original Oratory. Debate. Radio. Television, and Extemporaneous Speaking are the various divisions included. Our speech club is unique in having a Radio Club which produces O. H. S. Some of the many activities included in the club program arc individual and group projects, such as field trips, visual education, scientific ex- periments. and the preparation of materials for exhibition. Science is a wide and interesting field, of vital importance to our everyday life. The clubs purpose is to present scientific material in an educational and interesting way, by observation and experimentation. The memmbership fee this year was fifty cents. This fee covers the expenses of materials used by the club. In years to come the club hopes to develope a more efficient program. Gary Yoder (Mgr.) Don Newell has coached the O. H. S. track team to a very good start this year. As the Argus goes to press, this is the way the season shaped up so far. At the State A. A. U. meet the team received third place. Then in the state indoor, which is a different meet, they got fourth. They placed first in the Osky Re- lays. the Ottumwa Relays, and the Little Six Indoor. In a duel meet with Oskaloosa, they won. The Sophomores and reserves have had two meets so far and have won both of them, one from Agency and the other from Osky. This year the track team has improved and. with good prospects, hope to repeat next year or even do better, if possible. Larry Stater tied for first place in high jump at the state track meet in Iowa City. Page 110 Row I. Gary Koontz. Bill DePrenger, Harold Canny, Gerald Canny. Larry Steeples. David Archer. Ronald Snow Row II. Dennis Lundy. Jim Roberts. Larry Overturf, Don Howard. Bob Logan. Jack Grier. Martin Hardsocg, Dick Luke The Ottumwa High golf team has started on the road to a good season. As this year's Argus goes to press, the O. H. S. golfers are just gathering steam. Many of the last year's team are still here at O. H. S.. and the ex- perience that they gained last year has proved to be very useful in this season of play. Several new players were added this year and Coach Roth has started them off with the rest of the team. The team's first two games were both victor- ies for O. H. S.. and both were won with an ample margin of strokes. Our third game, however, was lost by a few strokes. Since the Argus must go to press fairly early, we cannot report on the other games of the season, but we are sure that the team will attain an ex- cellent record this year. Larry Steeples gives a putting demonstration. Page 111 5- CL. CL. Row I. Miss McRcynolds, Mary Green, Shirley Nevins. Esther Kent, Gcrri Spillman, Delores 'Best. Etta Young. The Girls Athletic Association offers a well rounded sports program to the girls of Ottumwa High School. This year they have enjoyed tournaments in basketbali. volleyball, softball, and badminton. The G. A. A. conducted basketball and volleyball play days in the O. H. S. gymnasium for the three junior high schools of Ottumwa. The junior high girls enjoyed the play days and members of the G. A. A. felt they gained much from working with the young- er girls. The G. A. A. attended play days at Bloom- field and Iowa City this year. These play days provide a chance for girls of various schools to know each other and play to- gether. Again this year the G. A. A. planned the activities of Homecoming which were en- joyed by the entire school. They also con- ducted the election and crowning of the Ottumwa Relay Queen. Soon after the new members are chosen, routines arc worked out. Then finally after many hours and days and weeks of practice the big night is here the first night of the annual Shark Club pagent. The next day there are rumors all over town that Under The Big Top” is terrific. That night there is a larger crowd and everyone agrees that this years pagent was the best ever. A big hand should be given to Mrs. Bard, the club's sponsor, and also to Shirley Long who has been a wonderful president. Serving as vice-president, Juanita Turner; Secretary. But elsewhere on this globe of ours it isn't simple at all; isn't possible, in fact, in many lands. Here we are with merchandise made the way we at Sears thought it should be, offering goods we felt you might like to see. There you are, free to select from Sears or not, as you yourself decide. We hope it will merit your approval; that we will be favored with your business. But, in any event both you and we have cause to rejoice in the fact that you can buy wherever you wish in the traditional American way. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing intensity. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us.
