Adviser The last chapter of our life at Ottumwa High School is finished. Sometimes it seemed as if we would never reach the end. But. we have finally obtained our goal -graduation. As we look hack on those three mem- orable years, we find that we were some- times discouraged. But, above all, we remember the friendly attitude of our classmates and teachers who hel|)cd us along the road of learning. As this year closes, we wonder what the future holds for us. Whatever it is, whether it Ik college, the service, or a job, we will always rememlier and apply the knowledge we gained at (). H. S. Not only is the scholastic phase of high school vital, hut the extracurricular acti- vities arc also necessary. We shall not soon forget the many honors we have received: Torch Club, Student Council, class or club officers, or as memliers of the various athletic teams. We entered into most of the extra-curricular activities with the en- thusiasm and vigor of upperclassmen. We have given our all to everything into which we have ventured. We were all pioneers, discovering the wonderfulness of high school anti exploring the fields of education. Through the helpful guidance of our teachers we have climbed a third of the way up the ladder to our main goal, grad- uation. Our class advisor, Mrs. Kinsclla. has been very helpful and a true friend to all those who have sought her help on any subject. The general school news is found on the first page and the club news on the third. News concerning Ik� vs' and girls’ sports activities and accounts of tne games are on the fourth page. The news is compiled by a student stall' anti divided into the four sections with the help of the four editors. All of this is accomplished under the capable supervision of Miss Dorris Creswell. Being selected to the stall' is one of the honors that may come to an Ottumwa High student, for onlv a few of the manv who try out arc accepted. The club is known for its numerous fine productions in the past which undoubtedly will continue. A membership in this organization is easily at- tained by any interested | erson. All candidates arc interviewed by a Thespian at the first'of the year. A file card recording the phase most in- teresting to the candidate is made. His work is then channeled in that direction. After the ini- tial acceptance the candidate becomes a plcbc and enters the active list if and when he earns five |K)ints before the first semester. To remain active a member must continue at this rate throughout his high school career. Under the direction of Mrs. Green the actors and the crews have attained the high degree of teamwork that leads toward perfection shown in the final production. Traditionally, the actor holds the limelight, but the fellow l chind the scene deserves credit for making the job of the actor much easier and better. Its locale was British General Hospital ! chind the Assam-Burma front. It is not a war play, but rather the author uses a hospital as a meeting place for G. I.'s of various nationalities to tell his story of friendship and brotherhood between men of different beliefs and countries. The chorus members arc selected in quartettes from preliminary try-outs. These pupils spent two days practicing for the concert, which they presented in the K.R.N.T. theater build- ing. The chorus was directed by Dr. Max Krone, Dean of Mu- sic at the University of South- ern California. Dr. Krone was not only an able and talented director, but an inspirational one as well. These students are chosen lor their excellent tone quality, correct pitch, and the ability to read parts accurately. From this large chorus are chosen several small vocal groups. Those groups arc a girls' trio, a mixed quartette, a boys quartette, a girls' sextette, and a small madrigal group, which contains nine members. Both A Mixed-Chorus and the small vocal groups have furnished many enjoyable pro- grams for both school and civic affairs through- out the past year. Since most of the practicing of the small groups is done outside of school, other students seldom realize the time and effort which is spent to provide worthwhile entertainment. Ushers Club is one of the most useful organi- zations at (). H. S. It is composed of con- scientious students who spend much of their time making (). II. S. functions more enjoyable to the public by providing them with programs and directing them to their proper seats. A big hurdle was crossed this year by the ushers during basketball season. It was the first year that the Evans Junior High School gymnasium was in use and since it has a seat- ing capacity of more than 3500 on two floors, the ushers did a commendable job in seating the crowds. 'Faking over the job of head football coach this year his gridders turned in a creditable record. Their success was achiev- ed by his competent and untiring leadership. Fred Maasdam—Since becoming head bas- ketball coach in 1947, Fret! Maasdam has re- peatedly turned out a power in Iowa basket- ball. In 1949 he let! a Bulldog team to the state championship and this vear his team gained runnerup honors in the state. His team this year also received top honors in the rugged Little Six Conference. Don Newell 'Faking over as athletic di- rector at O. II. S. this past year was likeable Don Newell. Don has showed his ability in the coaching field by turning out ton football and track teams. Even though he is head man of athletics at O. II. S. he is still the very capa- blc mentor of track Bullpups. Mr. Tiede—The man l ehind the scenes of the athletic department at O. II. S. is its busi- ness manager, Mr. Tiede. Serving in this capacity since 19.35, he takes care of arranging for meals and travel accomodations for the teams. They got back into the winning way by mauling non- conference foe, Centerville, but came to fall to a perennial power, Burlington. The 1952 team also set records in both the Little Six Conference and district meets, and missed a new state tournament mark by only three strokes. From last year's state champs George Clark, Johnny Hazen and Johnny Bonella were lost by graduation. The Girls’ Athletic Association is open to all girls interested in athletic activities. The goal of all members is to receive a letter which re- quires five hundred points or a G. A. A. pin or annual Senior Award. Points are obtained by activities at school and during leisure hours. Besides participating in a variety of sports the girls have initiated a new program this year which consisted of two play days, one basket- ball and one volleyball. Girls from other G. A. A.’s from out of town joined us in these activities. The Ottumwa High School engineers are a group of people who work hard lx hind the scenes to make our building a more healthful and comfortable place in which to work. Seldom do we realize the hard work that is done by this group, as most of it is done early in the morning, or during our class periods. In reality our engineers are very busy the year around. During school they work hard to give our class rooms, halls, and grounds a neat, well-kept appearance. They also operate the heating plant and keep our cafeteria clean. They are kept especially busv during basket- ball and football seasons. During our sum- mer vacations, the engineers repaint the halls and rooms, refinish desks, and make all other repairs necessary for the upkeep of the build- ing.
