At the district meet at St. Mary’s, they captured the District Nine Championship Title for the third year in a row, with a higher score than ever before. Five 0-E gymnasts qualified for state competition, which is another 0-E first. These girls have sacrificed much. Gymnastics is not a sport that one merely “plays’ . Gymnasts eat, sleep, and live their sport. “It has been worth it,” says Joanne Wilcox. “We’re all really proud of winning the championship.” Coach Jim Farr is proud of the team, too. When he talks about their accomplishments, he beams. “They are doing very well,” he smiles. “These girls deserve a lot of credit for everything they’ve done.” Below: Coach Jim Farr instructs some young Gym Teamers on the day of their school assembly. Under the leadership of Coach Farr, the Otto-Eldred Gym Team has gone far!

Every muscle of your body aches to get on that yellow bus, but you have cross country practice. You head for the locker room, since it is 50 degrees and raining you wear your sweat jacket over your shorts and T-shirt. The team meets in the gym for stretches. “Stretching out serves a dual purpose- it loosens your muscles and gives passers-by something to laugh at. After a half mile warm-up run on the Short Cut Trail, it’s off for a 5-mile run around Barger Hollow- which includes steep hills, wooded trails, and some road running. Could any practice be complete without a few miles of Chinese Rope Torturtf And don’t forget to do at least a half mile cool down and some stretching, or you’ll have sore muscles! Practice might sound like drudgery, but the feeling at the end of a race well run is beyond compare. ’ i ■ 1

Coach Fragle—Tough Practice Makes Team Tough “It’s as tough as any football practice,” says Girls Volleyball Captain Linda Redmond. “Miss Fragle is a tough coach.” They are a well-disciplined bunch. “Are you ready?” Fragle shouts. “Yes!” Thunders the team. The bullet drill begins. The team is standing in a semi-circle; Fragle is whipping the ball at them rapid fire. Boom, boom, boom—and if you can’t bump it back, it’s a few laps around the gym. Don’t forget stretching, warm- up laps, backward bumps, and jumping until your legs are like spaghetti; cooked spaghetti, that is. It is not an easy two hours. The Volleyball team is getting back to basics, in hopes that practice makes perfect. Upper left: Left to Right: Standing-—Karen Kerr, and Amy Baldoni.
