Practicing The Fine Arts Left to right: Mr. Black, Mrs. Gibbs, Mrs. Hertlein Objectives of the Fine Arts department are varied but similar in ways. Mrs. Gibbs, the art teacher, wishes to make students more aware of themselves and their abilities. In addition, she tries to increase their knowledge of art, artists, and artistic accomplishments of the past and of the present. To achieve this goal new courses are being developed for next year. A craft and or pottery class is being developed for Sr. High students regardless of their previous artistic training. New enameling and pottery supplies have been introduced this year in order to provide opportunities to learn about copper enameling, the making of jewelry and small dishes and the mixing of glazes. Mr. Black, teacher of instrumental music, wishes to have the students learn about music to the best of their ability, so that they can receive the most rewards possible. He works to make this learning more enjoyable. Above this enjoyment a strong emphasis is placed on the basics of music to inform the students that these are a necessity. Mrs. Hertlein, the vocal and general music teacher, wishes to expose the Jr. and Sr. High students to the many aspects of the field of music. The Otto-Eldred Choirs are made up of any students interested in singing. The seventh grade and Jr. choirs serve as a training group to the Sr. Choir, which preforms a variety of works. The choirs preform at concerts and local functions.

History Takes Shape The History Department at 0-E has several objectives, as expressed by Mr. Longnecker, the department chairman. The teachers try to give the students a liberal, broad-based view of the world in order to break down certain barriers which exist between students and the world they live in. To increase their understanding of the present, students are taught to analyze the past. By increasing the student’s knowledge of government and economic principles, the teachers create an awareness in the students which enables them to make political decisions. These objectives should enrich the student’s knowledge of past and present. This enrichment allows students to view the world around them intelligently and with an understanding they would not possess otherwise. Carrying out these objectives are: Mr. Longnecker, U.S. History and World History; Mr. Fazio, World History, Economics, and Government; Mr. Burton, World History, Sociology, and World Cultures; Mr. Howard, U.S. History; Mr. Stuart, U.S. History, and World Cultures; and Mr. Green, U.S. History. IT’S FOR YOUR HEALTH! Keeping us both healthy and informed about our health are Mr. Hess, Mrs. Pasko, Mr. Miller, and Mr. Roberts. The later teaches only Physical Education. Mr. Roberts teaches every day first period and second period on Tuesdays. This frees Mr. Hess to preform his duties as our new Athletic Director. Mr. Miller teaches eighth grade Health, but no Physical Education here at the high school. Both Mr. Hess and Mrs. Pasko teach Phys. Ed. and Health. They come in contact with all students since Phys. Ed. is a required subject here at Otto-Eldred. Their students get a chance to participate in sport contests and have fun at it. “Health is the study of body, mind and spirit,1’ says Mrs. Pasko, who teaches eleventh grade Health, also a required course. Mr. Hess also teaches this class. The students learn about themselves and all aspects of health.
