The main objective of the Language Arts department is to improve the students’ awareness of the importance of the English language and its literature in their own personal and career developments. Minor changes were made in curriculum this year to achieve the goal. “Elements of Style” and “Careers for You” were added to the course list. “Detective and Mystery”, “Mythology”, “Science Fiction” and “Black Experience” were mini-courses revived for ’81-’82. All minicourses are revised every few years to allow for a greater range of choice according to the students’ interests. Teachers are presently writing a new curriculum for next year. This department is also hosting a closed circuit TV system which can be used by any teacher upon request. Faculty members include: Mrs. Mary Harvey, department chairperson, teaching freshmen non-academic and Sr. High students; Mr. Richard Brown, teaching freshmen academic and Sr. High students; Mrs. Gail Cummings, instructing eighth grade and Sr. High students; Mr. David Perry, teaching seventh and eighth grade students; Mrs. Katie Redden, with seventh grade and Sr. High students; and Mrs. Anne Slavin, who teaches eleventh and eighth grade students. This is a necessity because everything we do today and will do in the future involves math and or science. The students should be able to understand the implications of math and science that we encounter and how this understanding can help better them. Teachers working to achieve this goal are: Mr. Flexman, department chairman; Mr. Palumbo, Mr. Green, Mr. Swanson, Mr. Zanot, Miss Leonard and Miss Fragle. Minor changes have been made, some of which include; the ninth and eight grade sciences have been switched around, and a new computer has been added to the equipment list. These changes will improve the efficiency of the department. Every student takes science a few years of his total six here. New teachers have come to replace ones which have left. They all do the same good job in helping us understand our world, and prepare us to succeed in it.
