' - , 5- ., l til i 7 I . . . . s. l Otterhein College extends to the readers of this years bibyl her Iieartiest grertings and good-will. The sun is setting on the eighty- , second year ol' her work in the lielcl ol' education and the work of the institution is a niatter of history. Une strong elenient of sound edu- cational theory is its prophetic outlook. l One of the dangers into which an institution like Otterbein may l tall is that ol, a worship ol' the past. The success of the institution l has been connnendable. ller growth in nunibers and the increase in the physical plant and endowment have been substantial. Over 2 S2.tttttt,Utltt.tltt ol net assets. ol which over ft3l,tl0tt,tltt0.llU is invested ' in productive endowment. and ten buildings with splendid equip- I rnent and the innnediate prospect of a new gyinnasiuni. are the t fruits ol' the past. l lnstead of being a foundation upon which to rest and an achieve- ' ment in which to glory. these things should become harbingers of still better things. Pliysical and niaterial things nray beget success of like kind. lidueational standards and progress rnay inspire to better achieve- inents. One of the evidences of our progress in the educational world is shown in our recent accreditnient by the Anierican Asso- ciation of University Wlonien. This recognition, with that of rnern- l hership in the Uhio College Association, the North Central Asso- ciation, the Association of American Colleges, and a place on the approved list of the Association of American Universities. places Otterbein College in the front ranks of colleges in Anierica. Spiritual life and growth should also he the result of past achieveinents. What Otterbein becomes tomorrow must be built on the foundation we lay today. Inertia and irnniobility quickly turn 1 into stagnation and decline. l Success and progress of the past niust be the lever by which we are lifted to higher and better things. Otterbein niust look to the luture, not merely as cl dream of a rich new experience but as a R period of larger life and development in the educational Field. the spiritual realm, and the physical plant. l ' Character, service. elliciency, personal unselfishness, coupled with a world outlook for international and inter-racial relations. must l ever be kept before our students and teachers and our supporters. i To this end we strive and to this end we yearn and pray. , X' P Y Presirtlelzl.
