S. to be lost in action. Taps at Twilight Blow softly, bugles, for our honoured dead, And tell them, where they sleep thru sun and rain, The secret of their rest can now be read By us who know they have not died in vain. Blow proudly, bugles, with a new born pride In our beloved dead, who slumber on, Still holding dear the Cause for which they died, Yet died scarce knowing how the day had gone. Tell them, loud bugles, we have heard the call, The call from mounds where tender grasses creep. lf we break faith with them. we too shall fall And we in unremembered graves may slccp. So blow, bravc-noted, through our ranks of doubtg The goal is dim, the field is still unwon, The night is dark, thc hounds of wrath are out, And a thousand terrors cloud the sun. But blow, proud bugles, sweet and silvery soft And tell them valour walks their vanished world. The torch their hands released is held aloft, The riddled Hag of honour floats unfurled. Mrs. Bonnie Abbott, our class sponsor, gave a party for us in the school cafeteria. Don Hike was elected president, Bill Knopp, vice-president, and Barbara Weddle, secretary-treasurer. There were only 65 students enrolled in 1943. Our class party this year was held in the gymnasium and chaperoned by Mr. Lamb. Bill Knopp was elected class president, Bernard Grindle and Barbara Kirk were elected vice-president and secretary-treasurer respectively. As juniors we had a most eventful year, although there were only 40 students enrolled. Miss Hughes was our class sponsor, and Mrs. Gore was her assistant. Frank Aldrich was elected president, and Don Hike and Ovid Barnes were the other officers. We sponsored a carnival in the gymnasium at Halloween called Goblin's Harvest. ln the spring the Alumni staged a Fun Carnival, and Betty Boner, a junior, won the popularity contest and was crowned Queen of the Carnival. We sold ma azine subscri tions to earn mone to finance the unior-Senior 8 P Y Reception, which was held at the Mayflower Room of the Terre Haute House. We had two icnics at Forest Park, a bowlin art and a theater P 8 P Y party during the school year. As seniors we again elected Frank Aldrich, president of the class, Marvin Smith was elected vice-president, Barbara Weddle, secretary and Norma Smith, treasurer. Mrs. Kirkley and Mr. Lamb were the class sponsors. Of the 34 seniors, William Creasey is already in the service of our country and several others are slated to leave at the expiration of the term. We had a fish fry at Forest Park. We also gave a class play entitled, Student Queen. Mrs. Kirkley directed the play, which was a big success. We, the seniors of '45, have worked hard and played energetically, but we have enjoyed the past four years, and now we bid adieu to dear old Otter Creek High. Page Ten 4-ll '43g llzlslwllizlll '43. Senior Class Will The Class of 1945 ended its long career April 19, at 8 p.m., after a prolonged illness of four years. The diagnosis of the coroner proved that death was caused by the bursting of an artery in the head due to the heavy responsibility and constant worry of our last year's labor. The tragic end was anticipated by many, but not so soon. The shock she received proved too great. and she relapsed into unconsciousness from which she never recovered. We, the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and forty-five being at this time of sound mind and memory, wish to dispose of our treasured interests as seems fit, to make, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament, hereby annuling all previous wills. Page Seventeen Senior Class Prophecy of 195o Folks, please give me your attention, There are some facts I'd like to mention Concerning the class of ,45. The students are stationed in many places, And of late I've seen familiar faces. For instance in Texas the other day, I saw a cowboy, happy and gay. As he sang, he stroked the pony's mane, Lo and behold! it was Joe Cain. As I talked with him for old time's sake, He said the trail home, he thought heid take. Ioe said he married Mariellen Moss, And that he was never the boss. As I bid him godbye, I looked up into the eye Of Barbara Kirk, editor of Look, Who had just published a new joke book. She told me some news about Charlotte O'Brien, Who seems to be a tamer of lions. While in New York the other day, Who should I meet upon Broadway But our former classmate, Frances Williams. She seemed to have inherited the millions. And tripping by Miss William's side Was her friend, Ruth Pruett, a recent bride. Frank Aldrich is coach of a basketball team. Of course, of that he has always dreamed. The bandleader, Don Hike, is known to all the land, Also, Norma Mattick, with her all girl band. Betty Boner, a second Betty Crable, Is like a character out of a fable. Ruth McKillop still likes to sing, We wonder if she can compete with Bing. Bruce johnson, man about town, Is looking for the girl who canit be found. And norma Smith is as busy as a bee, Working for the President at Washington, D. C. An army nurse, Gertrude johnson became, She cares for the sick, the wounded and lame. Doris jones is an instructor of gymnastics, In her spare time, she works with plastics. john Ruszler. as you might have guessed. Has invented a tractor which he thinks is best Priscilla Hodson. the tricky little blonde, Still insists that everyone use Pond's. Business for me, lack Black thought, So a chain of grocery stores he bought. Bob Homann, as you can guess, Is a radio announcer for WLS. Daisy McClara, a performer on Broadway, Is very popular, we must say. Lucille Smith is governess of an orphan's home Sheis kind to the children that are left all alone Rose Marie Smith is a designer of gowns. Dick Hultz, with his family, has settled down Cln Sandcutj Marvin Smith pilots a flying fortress, While Ovid Bames tames wild horses. Don Creasey has become a preacher, While Dorothy Stone is a kindergarten teacher. Bob Meyers has a farm all his own And is now wondering when wheat is sown. Barbara Weddle takes pictures for Look While Bill Creasey is writing a book. CAbout army lifel Betty Utterback is a teacher of history, And how she does it is still a mystery. Sara Herman, head of the fountain at Cillis', Says she will soon marry a sailor named Willis Mabel Howell is married and settled down, While Bill Burkett is traveling the world round After gazing into the crystal ball, We wish good luck to one and all. Jn- -1-7- 4 The Otter Creek Otters opened the 1944-45 season with a rather inexperienced teamg but by hard drilling and the excellent coaching of Fred Spence, the team developed into one of the strongest teams in the county. The varsity squad was made up of 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 3 sophomores and 1 freshman. This is the second year that Fred Spence has coached, and he has repeated his excellent job of last year. We all want to thank him for his splendid work. The Otters won their first four games and then lost to State, 26-2l. They won the next two games and then lost an overtime game to Clinton, 25-24. The next game was another overtime game with Pimento, but the boys won 37-35. The boys gave Brazil a tough battle but lost 31-27. In the VVabash Valley Tourney, the team lost to a highly favored Tech team, 33-31. Page Forty-One -.1-i Dizzy, Paul Dizzy Trout, star pitcher for the Detroit Tigers of the American League, has brought more fame and favorable publicity to Otter Creek than any of our former students. Paul left Otter Creek in the spring of 1935 to join the Terre Haute Three I League team. He acquired the name Dizzy,' as a result of his hard work. On days when it was too cold or rainy for the other players to work out, Paul would work out alone. The remark was made that Trout was udizzyi' and didnit have sense enough to take care of himself. He was always the first man on the grounds and Was considered the hardest worker on the squad. He later pitched with Indianapolis, Toledo and Beaumont, Texas, before becoming one of the outstanding pitchers of history with the Detroit Tigers. He established some kind of a modern record when he won 20 games in 1943 and 27 in 1944. Few pitchers ever win 20 games in a single year. With Beau- mont, he was voted the most valuable player in the Texas League. This year he finished second to his teammate, Hal Newhouser, as the most valuable player in the American League. Only a faulty scoring system kept him from obtaining first place. Each of ten sports writers were to rate the players from one to ten. Seven of the ten selected Trout for first place, but Newhouser received more second places with which total he finished ahead of Trout. Page F orty-two + s il., , - 1 -xi ,- DONALD MOWERY 4-H National Achievement Contest Winner The highest honor to come to any 4-H club member in the United States is to be selected as winner of the National Achievement Contest. This is indeed a distinct honor when we realize there are over one million seven hundred thousand 4-H club members. Otter Creek is proud that this honor for 1944 has come to one of its graduates, Donald Mowery. This award was made to Donald for his out- standing performance in 4-H club work and school activities. He has honorably represented our school in many county, state and national contests, helping bring back high honors to Otter Creek. Some of these include a state champion apple judging team in 1942, two state champion vegetable judg- ing teams in 1943 at Purdue and the State Fair, a champion vegetable judging team at the State Fair in 1944. a state and national champion vegetable demon- stration team and 261 ribbons from his exhibits. His versatility has been demonstrated by the fact that he always maintained a high scholastic record to be on the Honor Roll and also succeeded in many other activities. He was a member of the Student Council, the Otter staff, the band, the Science Club and the Future Farmers of America while in high school. In the last National Convention held in Rochester.
