Swan 61644 ww, In the fall of 1940 a timid class of sev- enty-one students entered the portals of the great institution of Otter Creek High School as freshmen. We elected the following stu- dents as class oflicersz Kathryn Riddle, Presi- dent, Mary Hurst, Vice-President, and Glenn Stultz, Secy-Treas. Norman Remington represented our class on the varsity basketball team. Our Fresh- ie boys were the winners of the inter-class basket-ball tournament, and the girls were forced to take last place in the girls tourna- ment. We were given a class party in the gym by Mrs. Abbott, our class sponsor. The following fall an enrollment of sixty three students, feeling more important as sophomores, elected the following for class officers: Bob Bryant, President, Walter Bram- ble, Vice-Presidentg and Glenn Stultz, Secy- Treas. As Sophies we enjoyed a successful year. Our boys again proved to be champs of the inter-class tournament, and the girls, improving rapidly, were runner-up in the girls' tournament. We were represented by two boys, Norman Remington and Bob Bry- ant, on the varsity team. We had a most enjoyable class party given by our sponsor, Miss Hughes. As juniors in '43, we were responsible for the annual prom. To finance it, we worked very hard selling candy and refreshments at noon. We also gave the Air Raid Revue. We were well represented on the varsity by six lettermen, namely, Norman Reming- ton, Bob Bryant, Don Smith, Bob Richard- son, Walter Bramble, and Jerry Neese. These members were responsible for a successful season. Our class officers were Don Smith, President, Walter Bramble, Vice-President, and Glen Stultz, Secy-Treas. We had an en- rollment of forty-five students. During this year our Student Council was organized, and our junior class was repre- sented by Kathryn Riddle, Don Smith, Don Mowery, and Glenn Stultz, fContinued on Page 26D Six 'f I ', -Q54 , DoN BUM SMITH Sr. Pres., '44, Basketball, '43, '44, Winner of gold basketball, '43, jr. Sendai: 61644 aqdloaq QContinued from Page 61 In the fall of ,43, forty-one intelligent students entered the portals of our great insti- tution as dignified seniors. We elected the fol- lowing class officers: Don Smith, President, Boy Bryant, Vcie-President, and Irma Neese, Secy-Treas. Student Council members were Kathryn Riddle, Virginia Austin, Joyce O, Rourke, Don Smith, Don Mowery, and Bob Bryant. During the year we took interest in such senior activities as selecting our caps and gowns, working on our annual, selecting and giving our senior play, and preparing for graduation. From the athletic standpoint the class was tops. We were represented by six players on the varsity basketball team. Coach Fred Spence depended on these players for vic- tories. As We close our high school career, we the class of '44 look to the future, hoping that our lives may be happy and successful ones. -By Walter Bramble and Don Mowery Twenty-six 4 an-'44 Um eaacfn When we needed a coach this fall Mr. Fred Spence came to our assistance. Although he had never coached before he was backed by seventeen active years in athletics-four years at Otter Creek, four years at State, and as a referee since his graduation from college. He won the Gillum Award which is awarded annually to the senior who rates highest in scholar- ship, athletic ability, sportsmanship, and general worth to the college. He also won the Bigwood Award in football. Twenty-eight - Q A l Nov Nov. Nov. Nov. Dec. Dec. Dec. Dec. Dec. Jan. Jun. Jan. Jan. Feb. Feb'. Feb. Feb. Feb. The Otter Creek Otters opened the 1943-44 season with a veteran team. We were very fortunate having lost just one senior by graduation last year. The varsity squad this season was made up of 6 seniors, 1 junior, and 3 sophomores. Fred Spence, our commerce teacher, took over the coaching job this year. We all want to thank him for his splendid work because he did a grand job. The Otters went through the first ten games undefeated. Some of the games were close, and the Pimento and West Terre Haute games ran over- time, but the boys managed to come through on top. However, when they journeyed to Brazil to play the Wabash Valley Champs, their record was broken by a 29-26 loss. The following week was the Wabash Valley Tourney. With two of our regulars, Remington and Smith, suffering from injuries, we were eliminated from the tourney by Tech, 30-22, after we had defeated Concannon, 37-25, in the opening round. After a rest of two weeks the Otters lost a hard fought heartbreaker to Garfield, 33-32. During the season Remington, Richardson, and Smith were high point men With Bramble, Bryant, and Neese playing fine floor defensive games. Since six of the boys are to graduate, next year's team will be some- what inexperienced, but we wish them lots of luck and hope they come out victorious.
