There was sorrow in the Administration department as well as all of Ottawa High when we heard last December of the death of Arthur L. Walter, a member of the Ottawa High School Board of Education. In 1953, Mr. Walter became the Hrst member of the OHS Board to be named from a rural area. Then in 1957, he suc- ceeded the late Dan Riordan as the board's president. Mr. Walter is noted for being the founder of the Walter Seed Co. in 1934 and its first president. Before his election to the Ottawa Board, he served as president of the LaSalle County Board of School Trustees and was on the Grand Ridge School Board. In addition to his widespread business interests, Arthur Walter was active in many organizations. He served as Chair- man of the board of trustees of the Grand Ridge Methodist Church and was a mem- ber of 'the Ottawa Rotary Club. He was also associated with the Streator Masonic Lodge, Order of Easter Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Bloomington Consistory and Mohammed Shrine of Peoria. He was also a member of the board of trustees of Peoria, Methodist Hospital and the executive Committee of the Starved Rock Council Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Walter was educated in the Grand Ridge schools and attended Brown's Business College in Ottawa. John D. Gleim, a Grand Ridge farmer, was ap- pointed to the Ottawa High School Board this year to fill the unexpired term of the late Arthur Wal- ter. Before his appointment to the OHS Board, Mr. Gleim was serving on the Grand Ridge Board. Gleim is a 1950 OHS graduate and has attended the University of Illinois. I3
