Of course there are those who look upon our time with a pessimistic and cynical attitudeg in the development of science, they see nothing but destruction, in the shrinking of our world they see only increased friction and strife. In reality, however, you are stepping into a world in which science has opened frontiers greater than man has ever known before. Air transport and instantaneous communication has brought every man on the face of the earth within easy reach of his fellows. There are actually greater physical frontiers opening today than opened when America moved across the plains of the West. If you are alert to the prospects of the future, if you are willing to work to harness the tools which science is making available, if you are willing to continue to study in order better to understand your fellow men - then you are surely going to reap the harvest of America's golden age - the scientific, the atomic age. We who have worked with you wish you well and sincerely hope that you will look back upon OHS with gratitude for the fine foundation you received in high school. The thousands of graduates who have gone before you have ma de graduation from your high school something to be proud of. As you move forward to make your mark in life, we hope that your loyalty to OHS will 1'91T13lH SU'01'1g and that YOU Will, Wllen occasion allows, return to visit your friends. Good luck. gag!! DIRECTORS OF OUR PROGRAMS Board of Education Top executives in the OHS radio and TV show are members of the board of education, shown above left to right: Principal lVlacRae Shannon, Dr. Clifford T. When OHS fans turned on their television sets, October 26, Home- coming, they beheld the seniors' portrayal of the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe . The potluck supper, cap and gown fittings, the Yearbook dance and assembly, and the Senior breakfast and picnic kept the cameramen busy. To support this radio station, the seniors sold Christmas cards, per- sonal cards, popcorn and peanuts. This year the Ottawa Pirates reached that goal for the second time in the school's history. This achievement was only the climax of a season which brought to OHS two conference championships, a Iirst-place trophy in regional and sectional competition, and the best won and lost record C25-45 ever compiled by an Ottawa team. The Pirates got off to a flying start in regular season play by downing Morris, St. Bede, and Mooseheart before being upset by an inspired Marseilles team on the Panther's home court. Ottawa bounced back to take La Salle, Seneca, Geneseo and Marquette, but Hall was the victor in the game which counted in both the Illinois Valley and North Central Con- ferences. Once again Ottawa got in the win column by beating Streator, Rochelle, Marquette, DeKalb, Mendota and Marseilles. Then Coach Love's crew met Rock Falls in Kingman Gym in a game which had the North Central Conference lead at stake. The Pirates led all the way until the final seconds when a desperation shot by Rock Falls was good for a 48-46 victory. Coming into the home stretch, Ottawa really caught fire, dealing out defeats to Streator, Dixon, La Salle, Princeton, St. Bede, Sterling and Hall. The final two games enabled the Bucs to tie for Illinois Valley and North Central Conference championships. Since the middle of November, the Ottawa Pirates had been preparing for the most important games of all, the regional and sectional tournaments. The regional tourney was held at Morris with Seneca providing the Bucs' opposition in the first game. 86 X , l 1951-52 Pirates Are Second OHS Team to Reach State Ottawa Ottawa 53-St. Bede 4G Ottawa 32-Mooseheart 25 Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa 65-Hall 42 Morris Regional Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa Ottawa VARSITY TOTALS Season Record 60 ' 40-Marseilles 44 42-La Salle-Peru 41 46-Seneca 28 4.3-Genesee 37 71 553-Hall 37 51 55 63-Marquette 49 69-Marseilles 25 46-Rock Falls 48 58 62-Dixon 39 47 - u 54-Princeton 534 75-St. Bede 44 58 81 52-Streator 558 58 L-I' Sectional 67-Mid-County 45 Ottawa 59-Dcpue 55 State Finals Ottawa 47-Jacksonville 57 The Fighting Irish bowed 81-41, but Streator proved to be no such pushover as they lost 52-38. The final game with Morris kept the fans breathless as neither team could gain a commanding lead until Ottawa pulled ahead in the final minutes to win 58-48. Next the tournament scene shifted to La Salle for sectional play. In the first game Ottawa's height proved a little too much for a scrappy Mid-County of Varna team. Holding a comfortable lead throughout most of the contest, Ottawa won 67-45. The final obstacle in the road to Champaign was the Depue Little Giants. The first half lead was stretched to nine points early in the third quarter, but then the Pirates caught fire and closed the gap. At the end of the third quarter the score was 44-40 in favor of Depue, but Ottawa surged ahead in the final chapter to win 59-55. At Champaign, Ottawa met Jacksonville in the first game. The Maroons proved a little too tough, as Ottawa hit only twenty-two per cent of its shots and displayed little finesse in its floor game. Ottawa was led throughout the season by Captain Lloyd Gromm, who also received the most valuable player award. Top scoring honors went to Pete Meckenstock, junior forward, who pumped in a total of 419 points. Bob Dekreon edged Lloyd Gromm by a percentage point for the Kiwanis free-throw trophy. A strong bunch of reserves who really came through when the chips were down was a major factor in Ottawa's success. Guards Lloyd Gromm and Bob Dekreon found able replacements in Jim Mclntyre and Jim Grafiis, Mike Formhals filled in nicely for center, Dale Olson, and forwards George Van Schoick and Pete Meckenstock were bolstered by Roy Ferguson and Jim Renwick. Too much credit cannot be given to Coach Gil Love, who built the Pirates into a team that will long be remembered by Ottawa fans. -Morris 47 -Marquette 528 -Streator 41 -Rochelle 34 -Streator 55 -La Salle Per 41 -Sterling 43 -Seneca 41 -Morris 48 1 1951-1952 OHS Statistics PLAYERS Fo P 'rl' Meckenstock 1137 92 419 Gromm 105 82 2831 Van Schoick 100 60 250 Dekreon 80 75 2330 Olson 82 89 210 Renwick 26 57 84 Mclntyre 22 37 G0 Formhals 12 16 239 Grafiis 8 20 24 Smith 1 fi 9 Ferguson 0 6 9 Gibson 1 1 2 Zwanzig 0 1 Nelson 0 0 0 Team Totals 610 547 16133 Just Before the Tip-off Coach Love talks With, front row: Jim Grufiis, 'l'01'1'y Smith, Lloyd Gromm, George Van Schoick, and Jim Renwickg back row: Bob Dekreon, Pete Nlocfkexmstoclc, Dale Olson, Milt Formhals, Roy Ferguson and Jim McIntyre. The 1951 edition of the Pirate football team, composed largely of Juniors, opened their season by dropping a 19-0 decision to their traditional rival, L-P. Trailing 6-0 at halftime, the Bucs allowed two more scores in the second half, but couldn't seem to get their own attack going. The following week Streator's Bulldogs came to town and met a stubborn Ottawa defense. The Novak-men, playing their best game of the year, took a 6-0 victory on a rain-soaked field. Rejuvenated, Ottawa jumped off to a two-touchdown lead over Men- dota in a bitterly fought game, only to see the Trojans knot the count for a 13-13 tie, the identical score of last year's battle. The second-string started at Dixon and immediately scored a touch- down, the only Pirate points of the evening, as Dixon scored two touch- downs and a field goal to take the Bucs into camp, 16-6. Hall's high-riding squad next fiogged down the gridders 20-0, as Jim Troglio, All-state back, scored three touchdowns to ice the contest. On the rainy night of October 19th, the most first downs scored in any previous game were clicked 05 by the Pirates at Sterling, but two scores and a safety drenched the locals again, 16-6. In the fourth annual homecoming game our TV cameras picked up the gala floats and participants. but the Barbs of DeKalb were not im- pressed. as their huge line aided in another shutout for the Pirates, 19-0. although DeKalb was outplayed the entire second half in which they failed to score. A realization that was almost achieved by our cross-town rivals. Marquette, last year, came true as they dealt Ottawa the first defeat since intercity competition was inaugurated. The bitter cold night failed to hinder the Crusaders' spirit, as they collected a 26-13 win. The last game of the season with St. Bede was played on a snow- covered field at St. Bede Academy. The Bruins. after three tries from the two-yard stripe. punched over the only score of the night for a 6-0 verdict which was the same score that Ottawa won by last year. In a postseason election Senior halfback Jim Grafiis and Junior guard Ralph Nelson were elected co-captains, while Senior fullback Bill Bruck was presented the most valuable player trophy. Strcator Rotary president, Ray Finfgclcl, hands the trophy to Chuck Cross, Ottawa president. They dropped their iirst game to an experienced La Salle-Peru team 26-13, but bounced back to defeat the strong Streator squad 6-0 on a muddy, rain-soaked field. From then on it was hard to beat the Corsairs Who, with a win under their belts, seemed headed for a great season. Sterling managed to hand them their last defeat 19-13, and a determined Dixon team came from behind to tie the Bucs 6-6 for the only other mar on their record. The JV's ripped through lVIend0ta, Hall, DeKalb, and Marquette for the remainder of the season. Jerry West had 40 points to lead the scoring, Jack Anderson was close behind him with 32. Good work will be expected of Fred Martin, freshman quarterback, again next year. Also playing good ball in the backtield were Don Tipton, Jim Bretag, Duane Nusbaum, and Dale Sang, who will be back next year. Mainstays of the line were Tom Knutson, Dick Wade, who thrilled everyone with his frequent long runs, Lynn Jehly, Bill LaBay, Dale Harts- horn, John Miner, and Gene Honeyman. Playing good defensive ball were Marv Pfau and Bob Strickland. The Corsairs, with practically the entire first string back, are expecting an even better season next year. Only 10 Ottawa boy. competed in the Urbana Open, but they stil managed to score 32 points, good for thiri place behind Danville and Urbana. Genese4 Relay officials failed to notify the Ottawq coaches of their decision to hold the meet oi a rainy day, and so the team didn't compet in these annual relays. Next the Pirate won their most crucial meet of the year defeating a strong Hall squad 66 to 52. Ou cross-town rival, Marquette, was trounced bg a 8215 to 32 score. Against Mendota ant Princeton, three school records were brokei as Roger Severson lowered the 120-yard higl hurdles to 15.3 and the 180-yard low hurdle to 21.0, and Wayne Bower tossed the discu 140 feet, 915 inches. The Bucs also continue their winning ways by scoring 7115 to Prince ton's 5515 and Mendota's 21. Competing in the Palatine Relays for th first year, Coach Keith Clark's boys walke off with the Class A trophy, edging ou Arlington Heights on the last event on th program, the 880-yard relay, by a margin o 56 to 51. Traveling to Streator, Ottawa bea its perennial rival, La Salle-Peru, and als Streator, 82 to L-P's 43 and Streator's 23. At this writing the local trackmen hav copped the De Kalb Relays and lost the Dis trict by one point, despite the loss of Gage b injury. They placed well up in the Nort Central and Illinois Valley conferences. Th team has been paced by Wayne Gage an Roger Severson in scoring, but depth in boy like Lloyd Gromm, Jim McGill, Sherma Ovelman, Dick Shipman, Jim Renwick, Bi Ieuter, Vernon Lock, Mike Formhals an Wayne Bower have made it one of the bes squads in OHS history. Intramural Champs Crowned For the first time since World War II, the freshmen competed in the intramural and military program. Musicians from the band also competed for the first time in the history of OHS. The 1951-52 program was well accepted by all boys who participated under the direction of military instructor fGeneralJ Robert McKay. Highlighting the program was Intramural Night with finals in junior-senior basketball, tug-o-war and volleyball. A basketball game between the high school faculty and grade school teachers brought a successful evening to a close. Points in each event were awarded to the platoons with 75 points for first, 45 for second, 25 for third, 15 for fourth. In the junior-senior program the first activity to be run off was cross- country. Drum Corps copped first-place honors, followed by CI, Band, and CII. Members of the winning team were Richard Eisert, Ken Foster, Louis Zucker, Garth Saager, George Grubaugh and LeRoy Jenkins. The next event was touch football which was played on a double elimination basis. The Drum Corps again ran oi with top honors by beating AII for the Championship. DI took third place and CI fourth. Robert Rentz, Don Roesler, Pat Duffy, Louis Zucker, Garth Saager, Richard Eisert, Dean Rothbardt, Ken Foster, Joe Haas and Don DeBernardi, were members of the winning team. The basketball finals were decided on Intramural Night with CI tripping up AII for the title. BI and CII played oi for third and fourth places with BI winning. CI was paced by Bill Gerber, Bob Goot, Jim Miller, Joe Strow, Dick Ship- man and Jack Jackson. In the finals CI defeated BI, with CII taking third and Drum Corps fourth. Members of the winning team were: Joe Strow, Bob Goot, Dick Shipman, and Bill Gerber. Tug-o-war was another event decided Intramural Night. The strong men of AI pulled over the musclemen of DI in the best two out of three tries. Each team consisted of ten men. BII held down third place honors with CII taking fourth. The members of the AI team were: William Bowers, William Gillette, Jack Manley, John Milam, Don Koenig, Dan Terry, George Van Schoick, Robert Chapman, Charles Potter, Elmer Houzz, Wayne Bower, and Ed Hollis. BII took a hard fought victory to win the volleyball title Intramural Night by defeating AII. This was another two out of three series of eliminations. DII pulled up for a close third and CII a fourth. The members of the BII winning team were: Dale Olson, James McIntyre, Roy Ferguson, Bob Snyder, Wayne Glein, Ken Logan, Bill Carlin, and Gene Aicher. For the second time in intramural activities, points were awarded to platoons having the best scholastic average. DII received first place points with an average of 80.666 AI, DI, and the Band followed in order. Each year, wrestling is tried by all boys in their individual gym classes. By the middle of the semester, wrestling teams were made in each platoon. The finals were held on an all-school assembly between BI and DI. BI finished on top, DI second, CII third, and AII fourth. Mem- bers of the winning grapplers were Victor Carr, Larry Lasswell, Bill Fuller, Jack Harris, Ken Frobish, and Bill Kelliher. Because of the interest created, speech was again made an intramural activity. Band and BI came down to the wire and the winner was decided in a school assembly. Tom Benson, Fen Taylor, and Ronald Ball pulled the band through for a first place. BI was second, DI third, and DC fourth. Mrs. Ben Rotter conducted all the speech activities. One of the most highly participated programs in intramural sports is riflery. Under the direction of Mr. C. J. Alikonis, the boys met in the blue room after school to shoot it out. 105 Junior-Senior Volleyball Action4Ninness Picks Up Ball Veterans- Basketball Champs Junior-Senior Basketball Champs CI shot its way to the title with a thrilling victory over CII by the score of 424 to 423.
