l Hlghwaymen To the theme of Body and Soul the ten piece OHS dance band popu larly known as the Hlghwaymen beat out rhumba rhythms and waltzes music both sweet and hot This band played for most of the lnformal school dances throughout the year If you were in a dreamy mood there were always numbers like 9 20 Special and for the Jitterbugs was that ever present Annu ersary Song Clt s a Joke son 'D Who were these great maestros of music? There were Lewis Olmstead leader and Wayne Butterfield They handled the sax and clarinets Leon Gonigam sat 1n with sax to help out In case you re wondering hes a Marine vet and former member of the band In the brass section were Dick Sheffel Bob Coats and Hank Leander with cornets Herk Lelx and Gloria Sanderson was at the piano The only trouble with the H1ghW3ym6H th1s year IS that we didn t hear enough of them' Lheer Leaders Cheer leaders for this year were Joan Ahern a senior Jean and Jane LEWIS Juniors and Marge Dekreon a Junior New cheers were introduced and were used at basketball and football games With the help of the Pep Squad they rooted heartlly for the teams Our four cheer leaders deserve a Vote of thanks and a lot of credit for helping to lead our teams to vlctory this past year 28 l ll 7? GAA Softball League GAA GAA at OHS was reorgamzed IH 1945 w1th an enrollment of eleven glrls Thxs year the roll swelled durlng two membershlp drlves totaled seventy five GAA IS sponsored by the glrls physlcal educatlon depart ment and 1n turn sponsors all g1rls athletlc and recreatlonal act1x1t1es outslde of class hours Mlss Maura Conllsk Mxss Mandl Youmans and MISS Vlfglnla Fedosky are the club advlsors Members of GAA attended a playday at L P and one at MOFFIS and financed heart examlnatlons 1n January for all members and prospectlve members In March there was a state telegraphlc basketball basket shoot lng contest 1n whlch Ottawa took thlrd place 1n 1tS d1str1ct April 11 was Famlly Nlght And at a mother and daughter supper 1n May state and local awards were presented to glrls who had earned them The officers for the year were elect d after a vlgorous campalgn last fall They were Clara Orblnl presldent Betty Saager V106 presldent secretary O Club The O club has twenty fixe members who meet sometlme durlng the first week of every month An eatmg club the boys haxe two DICHICS ex ery school year and refreshments are serv ed at the meetlngs Durmg the last school year the O club earned over 35900 whlch was used to purchase a football scoreboard To earn th1s ln part they spon sored the sale of popcorn potato chlps and candy at all home football and basketball games They also brought the Harlem Globe Trotters Hawauan All Stars Kansas Clty Stars and the House of D3X1d basketball squads to Ottawa for a benefit game proceeds of whlch were applled on the scoreboard Officers are Presldent John Suehr N106 presldent Duane Palmer secretary Dlck Claus and treasurer Bob Rosendahl 27 . i . , A . -Que.,-, The Band Tum te ta dum dum dum de dum te dum Such reverberances as thls could be heard 1SSlllIlg from the band under the dlrectlon of Mr Arthur C Hentrlch The band members slaved long cold hours last fall so that we could enJ oy those very n1ce formatlons on the football field The band also played basketball games Durlng the sectlonal basketball tournament the band put ln appearances all three nights Thls year the band was really a club with officers The executlve p0S1 tlons rested safely 1n the hands of LQWIS Olmstead as presldent Marge Blecker VICE president Ida Zuccarinl secretary and Ralph Olmstead treasurer The executlve commlttee conslsted of Wllllam Klee Russell Danner Wayne Butterfield Alex Bower and Henry Leander Some other actlutles IH whlch the band partlclpated were the V F W Amerlcan Legion Army day and Memorial day parades glrls gym exhlblt mllltary exh1b1t and the circus held ln the new gym The annual concert always a highlight of the year was held before large audlence In the front lanks were drum majorettes Marge Blecker Mary Jane and Dorothy Ann Grlfiith Gerry Foster Pat Jessen and Patsy Jones 29 li lf l T 1 host to the De Kalb band when they entertained here at the De Kalb-Ottawa , '.
