An idea was born eighteen years ago, an idea that has since grown into a revered tradition of Ottawa Hills. It was in 1940 that the first graduating class decided to prepare a testimonial of their admiration and gratitude for Ottawa Hills High School. This testimonial took the form ol' a yearbook. Before the wheels of oper- ation could be set in motion, however, the Class of 1941 had to overcome an obstacle, they had to find a suitable, yet symbolic, name for the book. To solve this problem the editorial staff sponsored a student contest for the naming of the yearbook. A committee of seniors selected the best names from those submitted, and these were again voted upon by the student body. Glenn McDaniel, a senior, won the contest with the name Mcsrzsa, denoting N one of the last and most pow- erful Ottawa Indian chiefs. Now equipped with a name, the Class of 1941 set the wheels to turning, stopping them every so often to overcome other obstacles, but constantly progressing until they emerged with the first yearbook of Ottawa llills, the MESASA. The Class of 1958 has continued this tradition by preparing a tes- timonial of their own, designed to show their admiration and gratitude for Ottawa Hills by re- flecting the laekadaisical and laborious, the laughable and laudable, life that is led under its protecting care. .f-'4 Table of Contents Faculty Guideposts along the Way. Deardorff, the executive head of our school system. We are grateful to Mr. Deardorff not only because of his service to the school and community, but because of his faith in us as a class, which he has demon- stratedin the capacity of a leader, advisor, helper, and trusted friend. To the Class of 1958: I am pleased to be able to extend this farewell message to each member of the Class of 1958. One of my greatest pleasures has been in watching you de- velop through the years, for you have achieved the distinction of being a really outstanding class. You have compiled a very high academic recordg including representation by a large percentage of you on the honor rolls, your high ranking in the State Senior Scholarship Examinations, in which one of you ranked first in the district and fourth in the State, and in which you took eight places of the first ten in the county. Three of you Won high recog- 1 nition on the Merit Scholar- ship Examinations, and eight- een of you completed the new calculus course, achieving a good academic record. Through your serious and genuine interest in high aca- demic achievement, you have exerted important leadership which has influenced the younger students to emulate your successes. You have, in addition, par- ticipated in a broad sports and activities program, compiling one of the best records in in- terscholastic sports in the his- tory of our school, and win- ning District and State honors in the various music contests. You have indeed made a very fine record, and I am glad for this opportunity to give you my congratulations and wish for you much hap- piness and success. Sincerely yours, Ray E. The parties, the dances, the foot- ball games in the snow .. . . all of these are memories that We will treasure for the rest of our lives. But perhaps our most vivid recollections will be those of our cars - the red, the White, and the blue Chev- vy convertibles, the custom- ized Fords, the multi-colored Jeepsters. Seniors' cars can be seen parked in front of O. H. during ,school hours, being torn apart after school, and jammed with kids headed for fun at all other times. Seniors experienced a fun- ny feeling when they could at last ask, Who's having T. G.I.T. tonight? It was now our class holding the tradi- tional Tuesday night senior parties, and we were certain- ly taking advantage of the chance. Everyone in Ottawa Hills knew that T.G.I.T. had started when he saw the part of Brookside Road in front of Judy Abbott's house jammed with cars, Perhaps the most wonder- ful parties, and the ones which stirred our feelings the most, were the ones our par- ents gave us for graduation. All their work and planning made the last parties our class would have together un- forgettable. 50 As we look back on the thir- teen years of our grade school and high school life, we re- call the many joys and sor- rows, the many triumphs and defeats that we, as classmates, shared. Now, as the day ap- proaches when we will walk through the halls of Ottawa Hills for the last time as stu- dents, we experience mixed emotions - joy, because we. have successfully completed our basic education, and re- gret, because we are leaving behind many friends who have become dear to our hearts. Memories of these friends, however, will always be present. Therefore, in the hope that you, too, will want to remember this year, we leave you the preceding pages. -J 'fm s Q3 6'Every step is an end, And every step is a fresh beginning. -, Q -w,,i..1 -f Aiai,- .-e1-., , ' E 1 I 5 -I Y L 10 jx 53151: , 1 Qu M Wg R g Sterling Cole, Recording Secretaryg Bobbie Lynn Henry, Corresponding Secretaryg Dick Fassler, Treasurerg Bill Skow, Presidentg Dick Barron, Vice President. dj P ,, IK GRADING PERIOD ,N PROM DIME DANCES SEQUOIAN ALL SCHOOL PLAY 1959 Class Ring SCHOOL SPIRIT ABILITY A ef 0 1 9 5 7 - 5 8 I 'i g f I I I I I I I c L E v E R , F u N F 73 5-fm-W 1 I Rl N E W M R it if G R E A T P E P P Y F I A N E ki - A r ' -- ii ' ge Em Q 1 al kia, lik A -4- ,1 . i f led . But when looking at today's school architecture, we think you,ll agree that glass has made a difference! Here's picture-proof that school corridors don't have to be dark and dreary tunnels. No longer must walls be solid and opaque. Today, more attention is being paid to daylight and view.
