Throughout this book you will frequently encounter these two very dear friends of ours, so it is only fair that we introduce them to you now. JON! 5 6 As Seniors We have come to realize that this is our final year of high school and we will soon be starting on our diverse ways. At the start We knew that this would be the best of our high school years, and We think We have made it our best. The senior class has modified the senior privileges a bit and felt joyous that finally it was our turn to be recognized by the rest of the student body. We joined in the Christmas spirit by aiding a needy family, and we all worked hard to make the senior play a great success. Taking care of graduation activities and choosing a class gift were other accomplishments. I wish to thank all the other officers and class mem- bers for their fine co-operation in this, our final year at Ottawa Hills. I , giant ta ' 'A f 4 4 5, a During our junior year, we, the class of 1958, had a wonderful time, and we feel that we have accomplished quite a bit. In the beginning of the year, we were told by our faculty that we must put forth a great deal of effort in our scholastic endeavors. Although we did not always live up to our ideals, we have completed our third year in high school, and we are ready to be seniors. The juniors have been very active around the school this year. We have headed many committees and held important offices in the various clubs. Our teams this year have been very successful, largely due to the help of the juniors. We had a real job ahead of us back in January when we started working on the Prom, but it was a great suc- cess, and all our efforts were worth it. Next year, if we are able to sustain and further our record, we will graduate know- ing We have completed four wonderful years at Ottawa Hills. The class of '59 is now ready to assume the more stately role of upperclassmen. Our accomplishments this past school year have been many and varied. We have again been among the leaders in school spirit and sportsmanship. The '59ers sponsored numerous buses to athletic events, and also sponsored several dime dances. The Sophomores eagerly undertook the task of selling season passes and made a success of it. All charity drives were willingly participated in, throughout the year, by the class of '59, and of course, all school activities were unanimously sup- ported by the sophomores. In closing, there is only one thing that I can say, and that is thanks to a great class, on behalf of all the class officers, for all the co-operation shown us in a truly suc- cessful year. We have contributed to the success of our football team and basketball squad. We have not only participated in these events, but our class has had very good attendance at the games. Our class has im- proved its treasury and encouraged school spirit. We have given a bake sale, collected tax stamps, sponsored the traditional freshmen dance, and presented skits in pep sessions. The eighth grade hopes that it will be as fine a class as the ones that have gone on before us. We joined with the seventh grade in forming the Junior High. This is the first time this has been done in the history of Ottawa Hills. We are starting from the beginning and building up a preamble so that the classes behind us will have something to work With. The eighth grade has contributed to various drives the high school has had such as the March of Dimes and We have contributed to the Junior High. The eighth grade sold Wrapping paper to help start a Junior High treasury. One of the most important things that has been started, though, is the Junior High Student Council. In doing this, the seventh and eighth grades have created a way of getting together to figure out their problems. I feel that the eighth grade has gained valuable experience in helping it to form the beginning of the Ottawa Hills Junior High. Seniors started solid scholarship with open- ing day breakfast at Jean Burch's, soon followed by first T.G.l.T. Party at Ellen Smith's. Our football team got off on the right cleat by winning the first three games. God Bless American and Blue Room filled the music room as chorus tryouts began . . . and assorted varieties of knees could be seen below bermudas and above knee socks at the Hi-Y Teen K'Bermuda Hop. Notions about September being a melancholy month were dismissed at Camp Storer . . . remember? '? November . . . started with a bang as our football team won their last game, completing an undefeated season. In the Talent Show, sponsored by the sophomore class, it was proved that O.H. can provide talent other than blocking and tack- ' ling. Best of many inclined contestants was Tito Black, grand prize winner. Bobbie Henry had sophomore C??J open house afterward. The dress was plaid, the dance was ' Highland Fling, sponsored by the Y-Teens, and the re- sult was fun! January New Years was officially rung in at Randy and Judd's party . . . much merriment . . . lots of lipstick! Proceedings at O.H. halted because of snow . . . didn't stop tobogganers though. Donna ,was elected O.H.ls candidate for the Area Student Council Dance. It's seldom that a surprise party is really a surprise, but engineered masterfully by Mike . . . Gail was floored! Exams put a damper on the spirits of all, but two blissful days of freedom followed while teachers received eyestrain from grading them. Revenge is sweet . . . February great month for ground-hogs, sweethearts, and slumber parties. Donna was radiant as O.H.'s nominee for Area Stu- dent Council Queen. Tito also honored O.H. in receiving title of Queen for the Area Y-Teen Dance, George Washing- ton's birthday was ushered in with two slumber parties at Goodman's and Simeson's - a night memorable for early morning jeepster rides, strange bat-like creatures, and little slumber! The month ended with the basketball tourna- ment, O.H. being victorious in one out of two games. April . . . Spring . . . you know what they say about a young man's fancy in Spring! The senior play was one of the best An epidemic of spring fever spread through the school as deadly as the Black Plague unfortunately teachers not susceptible! Many soaked up Florida sunshine during spring vacation a perfect end to a perfect month June .. . strains of Pomp and Circumstancen echoed through the halls as seniors said good-bye to Ottawa Hills Faculty and parents gave them a wonderful send off to college by planning some wonderful parties . . . every one will remem- ber that all night party! . . . Summer vacation ahead . . . and another year draws to a close will we ever forget it? March came in like a lion! Choruses strained voices at music contests in B.G.S.U. and Napoleon Seniors still enjoying roaring T.G.I.T. parties ? poker Many birthdays, colds, and groans over scholarship tests Village players showed much acting ability in The Great Sebastians given on our new portable stage Seniors also turn Hollywood as Senior play rehearsals began. Short hair cuts came back into style. May sunburned noses reluctantly came back to school after vacation of loafing The annual language banquet was crammed full of talent and good food as Latin togas, Span- ish sombreros, and French berets mingled to make it a fun affair The spring concert was also highly successful un- der Mr. Snyder's direction Talented sewers found a chance to show their accomplishments to the theme of Showers of Flowers in the annual Home Ec. Style Show. The Juniors showed just how anxious they were to be rid of the seniors by giving one of the best proms ever! aml!Yl ' SPCRTS 4:33 X All, X Trl? f K 4 JEL, 956 State Cham p jo 08 First Row: Hamway, Hanson, Cupp, Laughlin, Black, Nedelec, H. The 1956 Ottawa Hills Varsity had the most successful season in the entire school's history. The team was the uncontested Class B school champ- ions in the State of Ohio. Again, under the capable leadership of head coach, Don Drake and assistant coach, Fred Kreutzfeld, the mighty Green Arrows posted a marvelous record of 8 wins and no defeats. This undefeated season was high-lighted with the Arrows scoring 304 points to the oppo- nents' 12. With the winning of the last game, the team boosted its consecu- tive winning streak to twelve. The team was gifted with a wealth of material in both line and back- field. The defensive and offensive lines were definite mainstays in the teamfs strength. The backfield had unusual depth of equal capability to produce its function as its part of our outstanding well-conditioned foot- ball team. Some members of the team practiced long and hard during the summer months to strive to attain the best physical condition possible. The benefit of these long and hard hours helped to produce an undefeated season. There were sixteen seniors graduating this year and thirteen varsity lettermen will be returning next year. The school is looking forward to next year's season hoping it will be equally as good and just as successful. Looks good, man, looks good! ' it TToy Luckey H North Baltimore Ibelta .......... Coach Wayne Stewart's cagers completed one of the finest seasons in many years at Ottawa Hills. With only three losses in the regularly scheduled season, and a clean sweep of the 1957 half of the season, the Green Arrows finished as one of top teams in the state. The regulars, Gus Carver, Dick Swartz- baugh, Jay Torok, Jim White, and Jim Hill carried the brunt of the scoring, but Jim Ho- ward, Tom Glow, and Steve Nikazy offered help when it was needed most. Rodger Owen, one of the key letter men from last year, was sidelined early in the season with an injury. The Green Arrows were slow in getting started with poor showing against Clay, Ross- ford, and Perrysburg, but with each game they increased in poise and confidence. The scoring leadership was borne by each mem- ber of the starting five at least once, verifying the fact that the offensive attack was uniform and devastating against most of the oppon- ents. The fast break, developing after the Rossford game, was very effective in break- ing up a tight man to man zonal defense used by opposing teams to bottle up the keyhole. She has been instructing and play- ing with the girls almost every Wed- nesday afternoon. For the first cou- ple of weeks archery was the main sport, then hockey took over. The Ottawa Hills hockey team played games with Maumee Valley, Lake, Perrysburg, and had several scrim- mages with T.U. SPCRTS In basketball O.H. played Lake, Perrys- bury, Maumee Valley, Rogers, Maumee, and T.U. Bowling also played a large part at Ottawa Hills. Each Thursday afternoon many teams bowled at the University Lanes. We would like to give thanks to Mrs. Striggow for the fine job she has done.
