LABORATORY COURSES FILL in mornings, ruin digestion, and teach how to carve animals. Main projects of the biology class are insect, seed and leaf collections and extra-credit work. Donna, Don Douglas, Shirley Small and Mary Ann Hornecker are displaying their insect proiect. cffsc C, 00, rg.: 2.2.2 AN EIGHT-FIFTEEN English class wakes him completely, if it's not too dull, and he settles down to a day of work. Much time is spent in Miss Margaret Prunty's room looking up word meanings. The motto of her class is If in doubt, go to your dic- tionary. PHYSIC'S CLASS HELPS Gordon to better understand happenings of everyday life. Students feel they have accomplished something even if it takes studying, ex- periments and hours after school. Because of his high scholastic standing, Gordon was one of eight seniors who was selected to try for a KU scholarship. ZW Gordon Bruce and Donna Reinecke. The minimum load will be four solids plus physical education. Those who wish to better utilize their poten- ticulities may take five solids. ACTIVITY PERIODS ARE busy for Donna since she is president of Art club. This also takes many hours of work after school and conferences with Mrs. Barbara Eiehhorn, sponsor. School parties and sports proyide additional recrea- tion and enjoyment to students. Gordon was cast for a part in the senior play adding to his already busy schedule. Donna is also a nrernber of the Drill tearn and practices ex ery Thursday night. KATHY GAMET WAS rated in the upper 29h ofthe Seniors who took the National Merit Scholarship tests. She was also chosen as a finalist in the contest for the Elizabeth M. Watkins Scholarship. ROD LENNARD WAS also rated in the upper 2070 ofthe Seniors. He made the trip to K, U. to try for the Summerfield Scholarship. Faculty members met November 7 to select eight candidates for the Putnam, Watkins, and Summerfield scholarships. The Elizabeth M. Watkins Scholarship is offered to girls graduating from Kansas high schools. Kansas University also offers the Putnam Scholarship to both boys and girls of Kansas. X Awards will be made solely on merit and not on the financial need of the individual. The faculty also chose Geri Sue Figgins to apply for a scholarship sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The potential scholarship winners took the tedious tests on October 26. While at K. U., the stu- dents heard many interesting lectures. They got many ideas on what to expect when they get to college. A LECTURER FROM the National Science Foundation came to Ottawa University to give a program to the students interested in science. Briggs, from the University of Colorado, spoke to the math students of O.H .S. January l8. Mr.Briggs represents the Mathamatical Association of America. Some 150 students from algebra, geometry and trigonometry classes attended the meeting. He talked to them on the Fundamentals of math and how they could be used in a career. Miss Nora Evans, Miss Harriett Seymour and Miss Glenola Hayward attended the statewide math- ematics workshop Oct. 3. Among Students with Hzlgh Scholastic Goals An informative and interesting speech in Spanish was given at the Spanish club meeting when Elizier Risco, a student from Cuba, talked in Spanish. Entertaining programs consisted of every member telling a ioke in Spanish, giving skits to be trans- lated, reciting riddles and singing in the foreign language. A Pinata was held on December i7 to help cele- brate the festive holiday of Christmas. Feature of the evening was the exchanging of gifts. Council Members Work on Sakgf Rules Leading this year's Studnet Council were Dennis Smith, president, Thorpe Nolan, vice-presi- dent, Joyce Thornburg, secretary, and Allen Glenn, treasurer. The Student Council chose a safety committee to help improve the conditions in the parking lot. The committee, sponsored by H. K. Stevens, the driver's education instructor, drew up a number of rules and regulations to be observed in the parking lot and around the school property. Because of the wea- ther, the boys were forced to prac- tice almost one month inside ofthe gym- Prospects looked promising this year and they were backed by two returning lettermen, Gordon Bruce and Herbie Harrah. Last year's team wound up with third place in the N.E.K.L. Tennis and GQQ' Teams Gel into the Swing OHS LINKSTERS brought many honors to the school this year. Domonstrating their intentions are M. Latimer, R. Cheney, F. Gollier, R. Lennard, J. Corlis, T. Morrisey and J. Deputy. The T959 golf team had an impressive season by placing second in the N.E.K.L. league. Another honor came to the school when Fred Gollier was named medalist of the year with a 404. Miss Gillette spent her well-earned vacation at a lodge in northern Minne- sota where she had worked three summers. Combining work with pleasure were Miss Faulkner, Mrs. Parent, and Mr. Jones. He was particularly interested in visit- ing the English classes, and he spent some time at Ottawa University observing techniques used there. Special study groups were formed second semester for those students with exceptional ability. Attendance in these groups was voluntary. Much interest was shown in the various fields covered by the studies. Research was done in a field of special interest to the individual student, and papers were written summarizing the work. VISITING OHS FROM IRAN was Mr. Mohaninied Mehdi Adjang, an English teacher fron1Abadan. Mr. Adjang was a guest of the Norris Burhes and Rex. li.E. Caylor's faniily. Both families expressed regret as he left Ottawa to return honie. DR. MILTON DANIELSON froin the Ottawa University faculty was one of the guest speakers addressing the senior high honor study group. This study group niade up of students with high scholastic ability inet once each week during the second semester to do special study above and beyond their regular classes.
