Administration Directs School Increased enrollment and the demand for more classrooms added to the many problems of the admin- istration during the l954-55 school year. Under the leadership of Supt. Henry A. Parker, these problems were solved by adding a part-time teacher and dividing the study hall into two rooms to create an additional classroom to be used by the commercial department as a typing room. Principal Leroy Hood and Vice-Principal Norris Burke, confronted with the problems of the junior and senior high school, aided the students in planning their courses and schedules. Handling the school finances, Harry Cartzdatner, secretary and purchasing agent, bought equipment, including typewriters, a spirit pro- cess duplicator, and a new snowplow. Among the many tasks of Mrs. Vara Scollick, and lVlrs. Norma Wal- burn, secretaries, were the typing ot letters, tests, and announcements and the keeping of records. THE O. H. S. SECRETARIES are busy preparing the yearly reports. Mrs. Vara Scollick looks on while Mrs. Bonnie Storen types a page of information that is being given to her by HARRY L. S. tors will find their work pleasant and enjoyable, and that they will be here for many years to come. Because loyalty and service are traits which are to be looked upon with admiration, the teachers who have acquired long records of service at O.H.S. are ad- mired and respected by their students and co-workers. Although the teacher opens her door at 8 o'clock in the morning and closes it at four in the afternoon, her day's work is not finished. Quite often she spends many long hours of tedious work outside the classroom grad- ing papers, recording grades, and compiling tests. Others spend many evening hours sponsoring parties, selling tickets at basketball and football games, and meeting with the various clubs in the junior and senior high school. These are the teachers who will long remain in the memory of the students. THREE OF OTTAVVA HIGH'S sports minded teachers take time out to look over some statistics on the junior high basketball team. They are Paul Perkins. Iames Clark, and P. R. Iamison. t MISS MARY HARMON with a group ot students looks over an assortment of pies baked in the junior hiqh ioods department. Also critically gazing at the freshly made pastries are Marlene DeWald, Sandra Howard, Mary Fuller, Shirley Mason, Bonnie Hollon, Patty Hollon, and Rose- mary DeCock. Homecoming a gala occasion, the Student Council members constructed for the queen and her attendants a red and white float. After being presented to the enormous crowd which attended the Ottawa-Leavenworth game, Sally Reeder was crowned queen by Fred Kaiser, co-captain. Following the game, Sally and her attendants, seated on a red and white throne, reigned over the dance in the junior high gym. INVITATIONS to the game and dance were sent to many of the alumni. Cyclones End Campaign with 6 Wins, 3 Defeats In a non-league tilt with Chapman, Wilson and Bundy, two junior halfbacks, led the way with a touch- down each to make the score 14 to 0. Argentine, the first league foe, was defeated 18 to 8 on Ottawa's strong second half comeback. This game was highlighted by Marvin Wilson's spectacular 60 yard touchdown run. The next week again saw the Cyclones rally by beating Highland Park 20 to 14 after trailing 14 to O at the half. The Cyclones then journeyed to Shawnee-Mission for a non-league game, only to be defeated 19 to 13 by a powerful Indian running attack. Homecoming saw Marvin Holmes break Leaven- worth's back with an 81 yard off-tackle gallop as the Cyclones went on to win 27 to O. The Cyclones could not get their running attack to function properly on October 29, and they were thoroug- ly beaten by the Lawrence Lions 20 to 0. The final game saw Ottawa down the Washington Wildcats in a non-league game, 33 to 13. The B team compiled a season record of two wins and one defeat. The victories were over Haskell by scores of 14 to 7 and 20 to 6. Although the Indians tried hard to even the score time ran out too soon. In the final game of the season the Twisters were turned back by a strong Lawrence Little Lion team in a 20 to 7 effort. 4 THE B TEAM had a successful season. Back row: Ferguson. They are Carolina Larios, 'I'c'ir'-sei 'Ncirtt Carol Martin and Alberta Baldwin Starting the year with an initiation party, 12 new members were brought into the Future Homemakers of America when they performed ridiculous stunts under the direction of Valeta Niehaus, who was chairman of the initiation committee. Finding that pencils with basketball schedules were in great demand, the organization sold 1000 of them. Later in the season miniature megaphones were a source of revenue for the group. Besides distributing part of the funds among Worthy charities, a small por- tion was kept for a party in March to entertain their parents. X. Since they found enjoyment in cheering elderly people, the F.H.A. took gifts and Christmas carols to the county home on December 18. Returning to the school building, they enjoyed popcorn and cocoa in a true Christmas spirit. Besides attending the scheduled meetings, several girls worked industriously to obtain one of three de- grees. To receive the highest award, the State Home- makers degree, the members must first earn the Iunior Homemakers degree and the Chapter Homemakers degree. THESE F. H. A. Hofiman science instructor de- cided to devote extra time to physics and chemistry the Science club was formed. Chosen by a membership committee on the basis of genuine interest and out- standing grades in mathematics and science courses, the students had to be taking physics or chemistry or had to have credit in the subjects. The organization, which stimulates interest in science allows the members to see and participate in demonstrations and experiment on projects of their choice. Although some of the meetings consisted of films lectures, and demonstrations by guest speakers, many evenings were devoted to individual projects and experimentations. Fascinating and amazing results were produced when students experimented with chem- icals, and many an evening was filled with excitement when miniature explosions were created in the labora- tory. Actifve in Junior High THE WHlRI.WlND'S VICTORY over Iola brought smiles to the laces ol the junior high cheerleaders. They are Iill Brown, Kay Mox, Linda Barnes, ludy Corlis, Kay Mock, cmd Beverly Hobbs, who is head cheerleader. Two groups of girls who enjoyed athletics were very active in junior high this year. Bedecked in flashing red and white costumes, the cheerleaders yelled and shouted for the junior high Whirlwinds. Although they experienced hoarse voices and weary bodies, their spirits were not dampened. To prepare themselves for senior high G.A.A., the '1-...fr seventh and eighth grade girls attended lively meetings every Thursday during activity period. While many girls gained the 1000-points needed to receive the small O those reaching only 500 points acquired a pin. Receiving S35 from the sale of autograph books and candy, the G.A.A., under the leadership of Miss Marjorie Lancaster, planned a spring party. MEMBERS OF THE IUNIOR HIGH G. A. Partici- pating in the Christmas vespers and singing in the annual all-school Christmas program were two of the outstanding appearances of the group. Especially active this year were the small vocal groups. The trios were kept busy presenting programs for junior high assemblies and Kayettes. The newly formed treshman quartet also sang before various business and church groups in Ottawa. During class periods the chorus enjoyed many hours of work and play as they learned new songs.
