Foreword We, the 1941 journalism class, present this annual, sincerely hoping that in the years to come, this volume of memoirs will help you recall the many happy times we have had in the Ottawa high school and the beauti- ful and everlasting friendships formed during the school days. The theme of this yearbook is magazines and it is through the courtesy of the different publishing companies that we have been granted permission to use the various magazine covers in reduced form. We hope that this book meets with the approval of the entire student body and the members of the faculty. Best wishes and good luck to all. Besides being editors of the annual, Mary Olive and Eloise are also page editors of Seevers Adv. Manager Of 0. H. S. Hi-Life Selling papers is something' every paper publication must. do. After each issue of the paper is printed, you are sure to find someone like Betty Seevers out in front of the building selling papers. Be- sides being one of our best paper sellers and an ace re- porter, Betty is also the advertising manager of the Ottawa Hi-Life . New Student Eams Position on Staff A new and welcome mem- ber of the joumallsm staff is Marjorie Murphy. Since com- ing to Ottawa high school from Neodesha, Marjorie has earned a responsible position for herself on the Record staff and the Hi-Life staff. Marjorie is third-page editor of the Record and she is in charge of all the club pages and pictures in the yearbook. Page 36 ill? DRDET. Bookkeeping .lob To Richardson Bookkeeping is enough to make any person gray-headed. When the Record stat! elect- ed Dorothy Richardson to this position. they knew what traits Dorothy had that would make her a. good bookkeeper. Each time the paper comes out, Dorothy must keep a record of all money made from the sales of the paper and also money from the ad- vertlsers. Gunn's Feature Stories Valuable to the Record One of the most enjoyed pages of the Record is second page. lt is made better by Muriel Gunn's ability to write those hilarious feature stories. Besides being a valuable mem- ber of the joumalism class, Muriel also has charge of half the senior pictures. The Ottawa ecord 'vor xxm ottawa High School, Ottawa. Kansas. 1940-1941 Hi-Life Edition Mitchell to Position Oi First Page Editor If you ever run across a big word in an issue of the Record it's only because we have Louise Mitchell on the staff. Louise is also first-page editor. Shia has some very good ideas for page make-up which is one of the many reasons why she was chosen for this posi- tion. Louise is also in charge ot the senior pictures of the year book. Weedman Has Charge Of Junior Pictures A newspaper cannot be run without news. So, we have girls like Betty Ruth Weed- man on the Record staff. Be- sides being a valuable re- porter to us, Betty Ruth writes poetry and she is also ln charge of half the junior pages in Hi-Life . Compton Elected Managing Editor' 'lhe most tion of the that of the After very on the part staff, it Compton, o u t s tending was elected to the managing the Water Boy-Sports Writing Combined All the sport stories that appear in the Ottawa Record are the results of the sports writing technique which Roger I-ljort possesses. Roger gets much of hls information about the games by being the water boy for the football teams. He says it's certainly great fun and besides he doesnt have to pay to get admission to the games. Parkin Adv. Manager 0f the Ottawa Record In a recent vote taken by the Joumallsm staff. Dorothy lou Parkin was elected adver- tlsing manager of the Ottawa Record. Her duties are to see that we have enough adver- tising for each paper, that the ad copy is in at the Herald office and that all ads get into the issue of the paper. Stafford Talks to Journalism Class When we have only two days' left to put out the Record and we are short on news and ads, Mr. Stafford can always straighten things out with one of his famous pep talks. After one of these talks. you are always sure to get one of the best papers ever. Pritchard Elected Exchange Manager 'Ihe joumalism staff is always on the lookout for new ideas. In order to accomplish this, we exchange ideas with other schools. After each edi- tion of the Record, Esther Pritchard mails newspapers to about 85 schools out of town and they in turn mail the staff their paper. Besides bc- ing exchange manager, Esther ls also in charge of half the ju:-iior pictures irr'the Hi- Li c .
