The O.G.H.S. Yearbook Staff Proudly Presents: Thunderbolt '82 Volume XVIII Ottawa-Glandorf High School 630 Glendale Avenue Ottawa, Ohio 45875 Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime. Styx — The Best of Times The Best of Times loas chosen as the theme of this year's Thunderbolt. At first it may not seem very appropriate, especially when you remember the day you broke the school record for most demerits by being late to class for the 15th time because someone stacked your locker. But when you think about it, you just might realize your days at 0-G were really The Best of Times. Remember what a great feeling it was to be on a Titan team or in our prize-winning band? How about cruising Main with the tunes cranked up, always on the lookout for a party? We hope in the years to come when you dust off the old yearbook it will bring all the smiles and good times a little closer. Ruhe Born: March 18, 1965 Died: December 8, 1981 A friend of ours is gone now He's in a place far better than this And now we must go on minus a friend. We ask ourselves and others why And many of us can't help but cry But not a single day goes by that we don’t think of him. Perhaps as time blurs our vision Of his memory, we still are satisfied That our lives are better Because we have known him During the short time he was in our midst. c 3 Jeff a student pilot, was also a member of DECA here at school. Ottawa-Glandorf High School was built in 1964 through the joining of three elementary schools for a single high school education. Glandorf Elementary, right, Ottawa Public, below, and Sts. Peter and Paul, below right, all contribute students to make up OGHS. Since 1964, the school has grown not only in size, but also in academic and athletic excellence. On the opposite page is a picture of the twin elm tree which was located where the school is now. Beside that is our school mascot, the Titan. Dressed in the school colors of blue and gold, he symbolizes strength and character. Below the Titan Man is our school seal. Beneath the Eternal Flame of Learning, the seal is split into three parts by triangles which represent the three elementary schools. The book and quill stand for academics and the Olympic Wreath stands for athletics. The joined hands symbolize the unity which exists between the towns of Ottawa and Glandorf and within the school itself. ALMA MATER Ottawa-Glandorf, Glandorf-Ottawa. Where once stood an old twin elm tree Qne great school through unity. Three great schools in one are we, Praises to our Alma Mater, Here we'll grow in wisdom, courage. Hail, oh hail to thee, and humility. Above: Wendy Meyer reigned as our 1981-1982 Homecoming Queen. Right: Homecoming Queen, Wendy Meyer, was escorted across the field by seniors, Rich Luttfring and John Perkey. Homecoming Court 1981-1982 Nothing now is left But a majestic memory. — Longfellow This years' Homecoming parade and game took place on the week of October 15th and 16th. Spirits were high during the preceding weeks as classes began building floats in hopes of winning a prize. The theme for this year's float competition was ''Commercials,'' and those along the parade route were entertained with some quite imaginative entries. The Sophomores took first prize, while the Juniors stole second and the Seniors had to settle for third. During the parade, members of the volleyball team sold helium-filled balloons for their fundraiser. Last year's Queen, Gerri Gerdeman, returned to crown Wendy Meyer at the pre-game festivities. The Student Council invited all the past Homecoming Queens of Ottawa-Glandorf High School to be in the parade and participate in the pre-game gala. Unfortunately, our football team was defeated by the Defiance Bulldogs. The Homecoming Dance on Saturday night was a huge success. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the beat of the group, Showdown” and, in general, had a good time. 6 Senior Attendant: Beth Coressel junior Attendant: Shelly Nordhaus Sophomore Attendant: Julie Corson Freshmen Attendant: Carol Rieman Attempted break out of the Art Room. Collect 5 demerits. REGULATIONS The object of this game is to collect as many demerits as possible by being the cause behind deviant behavior in different areas of our school system. The first person to get admitted to the in-school suspension cage (26 demerits) wins the game. To start you roll the dice and advance. It may take several trips around the board to win, but then again it may not. This game is fully recommended for wild and crazy people. This game is NOT recommended for people with heart trouble, acne, or those turning prematurely gray. GOOD LUCK!!! The pressure is just too much for you to handle and you pull the fire alarm. Naughty! Naughty! Instant in-school suspension. Though threatened with demerits, you still painted chickens blue for the Delphos St. john's game. Luckily, you were let off the hook because WE WON! Underclassmen Seniors For the seniors especially, these were The Best of Times. Though most were busy with school activities and jobs, we still found time to have lots of fun. We planned for graduation with mixed emotions. Looking ahead to college and other future plans remains exciting, but, on the other hand, it is hard to leave our classmates and friends at OGHS. One of the highlights of our final year here at O-G was the successful production of Annie Get Your Gun. It took many hours of practice and hard work, but with the help of our advisors and others, it was well worth it. It was just one of the year's events which helped to make our senior year so memorable. 13 Seniors Hang in There for Their Final Year The Class of '82 began its final year of high school with pictures taken during the summer which were later distributed in November. This was closely followed by the selection of announcements, caps and gowns, the class song, colors, and flower. Spring events included the Senior Musical of Annie Get Your Gun and Cabaret which was a salute to senior Band Members. Graduation brought to a close the high school years of 166 Otta-wa-Glandorf seniors. They will never forget the memories of past proms and homecomings, homework and final exams, nor the teachers who made these years so successful. Motto: If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. Students Exchange Cultures Keiko Kuroda I come from Nagano, Japan, wh ich is located at the center of Honshu, one of the four islands which make up Japan. My father is a biology professor, my mother a housewife and my brother is studying Japanese history at college in Tokyo. My host family is Mr. and Mrs. Richard Leopold. I enjoyed having a nice family like them. I learned many American customs. I want to study sociology or ethnology, making good use of this year's experiences. Jean-Jacques Haizmann (above) For the school year of 1981-1982 I was allowed to attend O-G High School. During that time of interesting experiences and fun, Mr. and Mrs. Don Lammers were my nice host family. Thanks to them. In Grenchen, Switzerland, my home town, my father is a manager of the technical department in a watch factory. My mother takes care of her large garden and our house. Sami Telama (below) My hometown is Jyvaskyla, Finland. My father, Risto, is a professor of physical education at the university and my mother teaches Phys. Ed. in high school. My brother, Ari, is attending college in Finland. My hosts were Keith and Patti Hohenbrink. I feel very lucky to have had such a nice home. I participated in Varsity cross country and tennis and went to state with Ottawa's CVO basketball team. I plan to be back in 1984 at the Los Angeles Olympics as an athlete, but I'll probably end up as a spectator. Each year brings new experiences and special memories. The freshmen year is, at first, kind of scary, coming into a big high school with its maze of hallways and stories of freshmen Olympics. But, at the same time, it is exciting with so many things to do and people to meet. Then the sophomore year is a step up. You are no longer at the lowest step of the ladder; you learn how to drive a car and get the class ring you have been waiting for. Then you get to move upstairs and become a upperclassman. The junior year is a busy one, running the concession stand and working together to build a beautiful prom. Academics even seem important. Now you look ahead to the final step, the senior year. 39 Class of '83 Strives For Achievement The Junior Homeroom Representatives for 1981-82 include: Gina Gerdeman, Mike Tenwalde, Shelly Nordhaus, Bob Kuhlman, Cynthy Schroeder, Carla Kuhlman, Don Halker, and Deb Tenwalde. Officers who led the Junior Class are: Laura Heiing, Secretary; Lisa Jones, President; Patty Giesige, Treasurer; and Martin Langhals, right. Vice President. The 1981-82 school year has brought its share of memories as well as tears to the Junior Class. The time and talent spent working on the homecoming float acquired a first place prize. Prom, the big event of the year, proved to be a success through the effort, cooperation and organization of the Junior students. They gained experience and responsibility working at new jobs. Many volunteered their services for the community. Participation in social events united Juniors closer together. They showed their spirit at pep rallies as well as ball games. Victory was shared by all, both crowd and team. They still gave support in the midst of defeat. Many put forth their efforts and talents in band, athletics, scholastic tests and other events. Those who were seventeen donated blood to the bloodmobile. Another year is complete, summer vacation just around the corner, exams behind us and parties ahead. This year has left many great memories to cherish and keep forever. Betcha didn't think I could make change for a ten. This year's Juniors put a lot of time and hard work into raising money for their class funds. The money provided for a successful Tropical Paradise Prom. Norman Schnipke, concession advisor, helped organize the students from Homerooms, with representatives as supervisors. For each game they set-up before hand, sold concessions during the game, and cleaned up afterwards. Did you hear that kid smart-mouth met” Daryl, now don't spill it. 47 Sophomores Settle In The Sophomore class consists of 159 students who participated in many successful activities. Sports help develop character, give one a sense of accomplishment, build mental and physical stamina, and teach teamwork, and good sportsmanship. They even encourage study, as a student-athlete must also maintain a good academic standing. Some of the more outstanding athletes even receive some help towards a college education. Besides all these benefits, there's the more obvious one that sports are just plain fun to participate in and watch. The memories of a game-winning touchdown, an exciting slam dunk, or a team championship will stay with you for a lifetime. The Blue and Gold has always had an outstanding tradition of athletic excellence and fanatic fan support. None of this would be possible without the coaches, Boosters, and everyone else who give of themselves to help. Thanks to all. 107 Varsity Football Team Excels Throughout the Season 1981 Football Team: Front: John Perkey, Rich Luttfring, Keith Hempfling, Dave Rieman 2nd Row: Mike Davidson, Denny Maas, Al Wolke, Steve Stechschulte, Mark Bendele, Dan Jerwers, Tom Kuhlman, Russ Cook, Randy Hohman 3rd Row: Rob Cox, Kevin Kaufman, Todd Smith, Darrell Cray, Glen Kaufman, Troy Recker, DougGulgin, Bob Kuhlman, Nick Ellerbrock, Randy Factor, JeffWestrick 4th Row: Troy Cox, Rod Alt, DaveGodsil, Dan Kayser, Bob Fischnich, Bob Frey, Jeff Compton, John Hermiller, Dave Conn, Rob Kahle, Mike Reeder, Ray Amaya 5th Row: Doug Beach, Manager; Dan Brickner, Joe Schroeder, Ron Cox, Jamey Holmes, Norm Kettels; Mike Rice, Manager; Scott Ketner, Manager. Every day has a different idea, such as, Beach Day, or Pajama Day, and those who participate are judged by the Spirits in a competition. At the end of the week the Spirit Pole is awarded to the class whose members showed outstanding spirit during the week. Joyce Quinn, is that you behind those Foster Grants? The teachers not only give individual attention, but also do things above and beyond the call of duty. They take time out of their busy schedules of grading papers and planning classes to coach and advise. Though field trips are hard work to plan and supervise, teachers sacrifice their time in order that we could go to King's Island, skiing, canoeing, and on various other trips. Choosing Teacher of the Year had to be a difficult decision with such a wide choice. But Mr. Moening was finally chosen because of his many contributions to the school system and years of outstanding service. We'd also like to pay tribute to Mrs. Betty Schumacker who is retiring this year after 14 years in the O-G school system. Though we are losing a great teacher, we wish her happiness in retirement. 161 New Superintendent Initiated at O-G DR. We'll always be proud to have been a part of this great school and we hope the school can say the same. Though sometimes we drove the teachers crazy in the pursuit of a goodtime, we managed to get along pretty good. Anyways, we'd like to thank them and the people who brought us from diapers to diplomas, our parents. This copy brings to a close the 18th edition of the Titan Thunderbolt. Though we had some good times putting it together, the best part is finally getting it done. Thanks to the staff and Mrs. Meyer, who worked so hard. Jackie McCrate Editor 191 Autographs 192 Eg
