THUNDERBOLT'81 Together is Better Finding a theme for the 1981 Thunderbolt was a problem at first. What theme could be used to apply to the Ottawa-Glandorf High School? After observing students it was obvious! Togetherness was found everywhere. As one walks into the school, groups of students are found talking about the upcoming school day. Later in the day one views students working together in various classes. After school sports demand togetherness to achieve their goals. Also, after school many students are found gathered together in various clubs. Togetherness is especially shown as classes work to make their class a worthwhile class. The seniors have lead others by improving the school. They have certainly proved that β Together Is Better. Togetherness was first shown in 1964 when the three schools of Glandorf Elementary, Ottawa Public, and Saints Peter and Paul Schools joined together to form one high school. Even then they stressed that Together Is Better. OTTAWA-GLANDORF Ottawa Elementary St. Peter and Paul Elementary RIGHT: DeAnne Krouse and Kelly Bruns exchange senior pictures. How can you say together is better when Jim and Susan just broke up and feel a whole lot better? Of course βtogether is better! How would we make it through the day without the help of our friends and teachers? Especially when a teacher explains everything as clear as mud? Remember all the football games that everyone huddled together to keep warm? The frozen lips that couldn't make a sound come out of your horn, or the frozen hands that had lost all feeling after cheering the football team on to victory? Remember the crowded bleachers at all the games when you wanted to kick the little punks (grade school children) out of the high school cheering block? How about the weekends when everyone crowded in the Town Pump to socialize the friends? Well, I guess we finally get the point that Together Is Better! I hope that you will continue to find togetherness as you finish the remaining pages of this yearbook. Knowing that their working together will produce a beautiful prom, Nick Doepker, Tricia Kirkendall, Donna Nienberg, Wendy Meyer, and Vicky Conn take a break. During a bonfire tradition before an important football game, Mr. Stokes encourages the team to victory. TOP ROW: Coach Mike Kuhbander, Gary Lammers, Scott Schroeder, Dave Bruskotter, Kevin Lammers, Jeff Nordhaus, Randy Hohman, Jamie Kelley, Mike Beckman. The Winners Take It All A winner is one who is victorious, and successful. It is one who strives for a specific goal and goes to great lengths to achieve his or her goal. Ottawa-Glandorf is proud to have many winners. Great endurance and motivation sent senior Jeff Duling to state competition in Cross Country. During the year Jeff ran many miles to prepare for his hard earned trip to Columbus. Working together the Ottawa CYO team earned a state berth. Determination helped them to defeat many opponents and to place forth in the state. The mile relay team consisting of Dean Mormon, Larry Heiing, Brian Kaufman, and Randy Hohman advanced to the state track meet in Columbus where they qualified for the finals and ran to an eighth place finish. Athletically and academically inclined Junior Scott Schroeder placed 201 out of 29,000 students in the National High School Mathematics Exam in the state of Ohio. These Winners tried to take the highest honors in their event. Each one was filled with a huge sense of achievement and knew that their hard had been rewarded. TOP LEFT: Anticipating the trip to Columbus, Larry Heiing gets ready for the race. TOP RIGHT: Dean Morman prepares to practice since he qualified for state finals in the mile relay team. BOTTOM LEFT: Crossing the finish line, Brian Kaufman anchors another first place. BOTTOM RIGHT: Striving for the top, Randy Hohman gives it his all. 7 With the help of willing teachers, students were guided through a maze of numerous activities. The seniors united to produce an excellent musical after hours of practice. They were also brought together for the last time at their graduation ceremony. The juniors worked very hard to create Oriental Cardens. The result was an enjoyable evening at the Prom. Students from all classes participated in the talent show and in building floats for the homecoming parade. Whatever activity it happened to be, students found that working Together Is Better. Seniors Can Now Look Ahead To Their Future The Graduating Class of 1981 have ended their year, but the memories will forever linger on. Guiding the class this year was Steve Burnette, president; Shelly Ellerbrock, vice president; Gina Gable, secretary; and loan Michel, treasurer. The class colors were lavender and ivory. Our class flower was the lilac and our class song was Leavinβ Home Ain't Easy. Through both the good times and the bad, as graduation approached our class was drawn closer together. Approximately 400 ft. of murals were painted. A colorful streamer ceiling and props such as a pagoda roof and a waterfall help set the mood. Our advisor, John Aiello, and many students put in long hours of work to make the prom a success. Several area businesses contributed merchandise. Many thanks to everyone who helped. What do you mean, what is it? This year a professional photographer took prom pictures. Couples were meticulously dressed; the gym was transformed into an Oriental Garden for the evening, and a locally organized band, E-Z Company, provided the music. Freshmen stood ready at the punch bowl to serve all. The above couples, Lynn Drerup and Dean Doepker, Deanna German and )oe Clark, along with jean Diemer and Dave Karhoff joined in the festivities. Exchange Students Experience New Lifestyles This year at O-G we were fortunate enough to have five exchange students stay with us. They came from different countries to share their lifestyles and learn about the United States. Jorge Riquelme came to the United States from Iquique, a city in northern Chile located on the Atacama Desert. While here, Jorge stayed with the Dale Elliott family and attended O-G High School. Jorge plans to attend the university upon his return to Chile. Saija Salmi, of Helsinki, Finland, stayed with the Ray Lewis family and was enrolled at O-G for a year. Saiji joined in activities new to her, such as rollerskating. She plans to see more of the United States by taking a bustrip to Washington D.C. and Florida before her return to Finland. Other exchange students visiting our school were Jonathon Santos, from the Philippines and Katharina Petry and Jutta Zimmerman both of Lauterbach, West Germany. But all of this hard effort did make the trip worthwhile as we record the memories. If I drop it now. I'll die! During Mini-Course Week, many local businesses shared their particular expertise with the students. Whether it be sports, band, or whatever, the students wish to extend their thanks to the Ottawa-Clandorf community for helping in every way they can and showing that βTogether Is Better. Further, as this copy is being written on June 15, 1981, the raging flood waters of the Blanchard River cause suffering and hardship to our businesses, our homes, and our farms. To return to normalcy, many of us will closely relate to Together Is Better. Yearbook thanks one and all. The Final Days As the final days for seniors grew near, they worked together to improve our school. As our Class President, Steve Burnette, stated, βWe want to be a class that does something for our school not to it. On May 16, a group of seniors painted the back wall of the stage to cover up old grafitti, and they also painted the marquee in front of the school. Also on this day volunteers from the senior class worked at their Trash and Treasure Sale to raise the needed money for graduation and a memorial to Patrick McCracken. On May 24, at 2:00 p.m. the seniors gathered together for the final time at graduation. For some, it was a time of joy; for others a time of sorrow. However, each one will always remember the great times we had together and never forget all the things we learned at Ottawa-Glandorf High School.
