T HUNDERBOLT PRESENTS OTTAU A-QLANDORf HIGH SCHOOL OTTAWA, OHIO VOLUME IV FOREWORD . . . In the years to come we hope that you will pause as you turn these pages to relive each moment of this important year which has seen many changes in the lives of all. Many of us, for various reasons, have failed to keep a scrapbook during our years in high school. Now that these happy days are over for some of us, many will feel just a little pang of regret at having no souvenirs to reflect upon in later years to keep the joys of these unforgettable memories fresh in our minds. It is for this reason that we have tried to preserve for you in one small volume, all the things that you might have kept in your own book. This is the book that you never had time to keep. This is your scrapbook of memories. TABLE OF CONTENTS . . . Facultq 4 Organizations 62 Seniors 14 Music 84 Underclassmen 32 Sports 92 Student Life 46 Advertisements 114 3 The carefully planned schedule for classwork. the questions of students to cope with, the thoughtful answer, the helpful hours of encouragement after school, the many hours spent in advising clubs, the hours spent in trying to improve the curriculum— all of these constitute FACULTY. 5 In an ape when dissent is prevalent, when civil disobedience is the rule, when moral values arc questioned and “God is dead ’ — you pupils of OGHS are to be commended. Your conduct in school and your sportsmanship at extra-curricular activities have drawn unsolicited praise from educators and lay citizens who have come into contact with you. You are not pupils preparing to live as law-abiding citizens. Rather, vou are currently living as law abiding citizens in your school life. When others are attempting to “drop-out of society and destroy the home, the church, the school, and the nation;— you are “dropping-in” to the mainstream of society and strengthening these institutions. To you seniors, I thank you for your leadership and ask that you continue to lx builders in your new roles after graduation. To you underclassmen. I only ask that you follow in the footsteps of the alumni who have worked hard to make OGHS the prestige school it has become in four short years. Leslie Ratliff, Superintendent Members of the Ottawa-Glandorf School Board arc: Virgil Ellcrbrock, Vice-President; Robert Veis, President; Carl Frick. Clerk; Alan Klemrn: Tom Studer: James Hermiller; and Superintendent Leslie Ratliff. How many of you were tardy this year? And were any absences felt? Or is it that the time in school is as the snow that melts. Each year brings another Spring, and later there's the Fall. . . . Have you lived any real commitments. or made none at all ? [ust a portion of your life you spend in these very special days. They arc our gift to you in helping point the ways — that your ship of life may sail a fairly steady course and looking back from distant seas you’ll have no sore remorse . . . nor sentiments of things not done, and energies ill-spent. For in these wonder, formative years you’re learning self-intent. The greater task has always been — do the best that you can do. It’s a habit first, then an attitude, belonging just to you. Though often easy to shirk the load, to drag your feet, or wait . . . . . . it’s a sorry person who settles for something less. M rs. Morman Mrs. Smith Secretaries The special school jjersonnel of O-G is composed of a small group of hard working people who perform a number of different jobs. These “women behind the scenes” make sure that our high school runs smoothly and efficiently. Surely these people deserve the cooperation and appreciation of the students for making the school a comfortable place to be. M rs. Siebeneck 7 Mrs. Brinkman Glen R. IS i I Class of 1968 I am a Senior, Mightier than the Mightiest. Address me as your highness. Exalted Leader, or Master. I am at the top — I am a Senior! Four long years of experience have made me Wise, understanding, and very mature. Through high school Fve come To know my classmates well. I feel as if each Senior is a friend As long as he’s a part of my class — He's a part of me! I concern myself with fads as well as friends. I wear a mini-skirt and psychedelic prints; I groan over “Super Chicken” and Polock jokes; I am haunted by the “SPIRITS” and “Snoopy and the Red Baron.” I drool over Mickey, Peter, Mike, or Davcy — I am truly a “Monkey Man.” Officers for the class of 1968 were: President — Jeff Von-derEmbse; Vice-President — Ken Inkrott; Secretary — Sandi Weis; Treasurer—Mary Laudick .The class of '68 owes a debt of gratitude to these officers as they led the class to a year to be proud of. SENIOR POSITION BRINGS PRESTIGE, NEW FREEDOM. AND SELF CONFIDENCE Being a Senior means many things. I am looked up to by fellow students. I meet many new problems, But I have more freedom too. Some of us have obtained it by nerve — Who else would just get up and walk out of study hall? The older I get the greater my freedoms, The greater my freedoms, the larger my responsibility I am beginning to earn more money. The price of clothes and cars and colleges Cause me to consider How to pay for what I need — How to contribute most to my own success. How to select the best for me And yet be fair to my family . . . I want to go to college Yet I’m not sure of where — There are so many, all so different. I’ve got applications to fill out. Campuses to visit and tests to think about. I want to get a job But where to apply? I would like a good job And I want to be able to advance. Maybe I'll get married and raise a family. I have so little time to decide. SENIOR MEMOIRS EXTEND TO THE FUTURE Time passes so slowly, or So it seems when you’re An unimportant Freshman. As you struggle through those Bleak days of the Sophomores And Juniors, you finally reach the top. Now you’re ready to become an Active U.S. citizen and voice your opinion. You’ve already lived through a year of world events As you cheered the Cardinals on to a World Series And watched in shocked horror the destruction Of Detroit in racial riots. Major opinions on Vietnam lead to Many draft card burnings and the hippy revolution. The “Pueblo” incident set America on edge As the U.S. nearly engaged in war. And so with anticipation I discuss The prospects for the next election — I am interested — for my fate rests with The next president and the coming Year of history. Nancy Ann Schwcller Dale P. I’m sitting in the gym, dressed in a cap and gown, Listening to the honorable guest speakers . . . I feel a little uncomfortable, a little anxious. If I start thinking, I’ll probably become frightened. My mind wanders somewhat— Back to a year of wonderfid memories— Ahead to an unknown future. Graduation means goodbye— To school spirit. Senior parties, Games, and record hops— To a high school routine and superiority. It means a new way of life, A bridge to opportunity and happiness. I’m excited, optimistic, hopeful, And no longer a part of OGHS. All Titan fans saw Mary as she helped cheer Titans on to another victory. 48 As in the past, mere shadows float along the corridors, pasting and painting signs to encourage a unity in school spirit; and appropriately enough they were dubbed the “Spirits”. Under the talents of Don Miller, Barb Dickinson, Teresa Schumacher, Carol Tenwaldc, and Mike Ruhe, O-G was haunted successfully in 1967-68. The “Spirits” and their talents were not unrewarded as many students “Oooo...d” and “Ahhh...d” their artwork. Among those most admired were the “pressing of the Dclphos Blue Jays” and the giving of first aid to the Wapak Redskins”. S9 IV- ITs Students of the Months Tribute was bestowed upon outstanding students who made a special effort during the year to improve O-G. Allan Ruhe was one big powerhouse both on the gridiron and on the floorboards. Jim Fcn-bert, who exhibited unusual feats on the football field, also showed unwavering spirit as he portrayed the mighty TITAN at each home basketball game. Denny Drerup and his muscular abilities came flying through wrestling season with a 9-3-1 record. Dave Brinkman was given the male vocalist lead in the Senior Musical, “My Fair Lady . Jim Losh was chosen Northwest DECA Chairman and again brought honors to O-G. Peg Brown petitioned for a cheering block to support the teams, and was given the TITAN BLOCK for her efforts. Lastly there was Peg Daub, who was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Test and who graced O-G with her intellect. 49 Homecoming Before the homecoming kickoff, the citizens and students of Ottawa and Glandorf gathered in the downtown Ottawa area to view the band, the queen and her attendants, and the skillfully constructed floats. In the upper right hand corner is the first place float which was made by the Distributive Education class. Their theme was “Sink Saint Mary’s.” The Freshmen, after much hard and diligent work, came in second. Their float is shown at the right; their theme was “Ransack Rough-riders.” The following evening all the O-G High fans assembled at the gymnasium for a dance centered around the theme “Happiness is Homecoming.” 50 Happiness Is Homecoming “Homecoming is Happiness” is forever true, and this school year proved to be no exception. On October 6, 1967, everyone came out bright and cheerily for an evening of festivity. Fluffy golden mums, sold by the Junior class, were purchased by many of the fellows for their homecoming dates; the mums symbolized not only a warm feeling, but they gave a touch of unity to the vivacious and colorful crowd. Patches of yellow' seemed to predominate as did the sparkling smiles. Probably, however, the biggest smiles were when the 1967 homecoming queen and court arrived. They each looked elegant and lovely and seemed to represent perfectly O-G beauty, personality, and spirit. Our poignant and glamorous Queen, Teri Ellerbrock, was attended by a representative from each class. The Freshman attendant w'as bubbly Chris Ruhe, the Sophomore attendant w'as petite Chris Beckman, the Junior attendant pert Peg Wilson, and the Senior attendant vivacious Sandy Weis. With a lively crowd and a spirited team, the TITAN fans enjoyed a glorious evening. 51 • -IW Sandra Weis is a real fox. Exhausted groups sit on the floor to chat and rest. Sadie Hawkins Dance is Big Success Even though the typical 1967 autumn rains fell, the Sadie Hawkins Dance was held at the Fourth Street Gymnasium on November 18. The cold, dank weather saturated the world outside, but within the walls of the old gym gaiety and mirth prevailed. Everyone present was dressed to suit the glorious and uproarious occasion! Old straw hats were bedecked with flowers and ribbons. Daisy May skirts and tennies were donned by the girls while cut-offs and “old farmer jeans’’ were worn by the “men.” Corn cob pipes, empty kegs, and shotguns “to purtek the wimunfok” were carried by the brave men of the hills. The crowd fast danced and square danced to the “sounds” of The Impressions, and while the band took their breaks many O-Gites joined in games of Red Rover. Barb Dickinson laughs so hard she almost cries. 52 Christmas is a Time of Caietij Christinas is always a tremendously exuberant and spirited time of year. The exuberance and spirit of Christmas dwell everywhere and Ottawa-Glandorf High School shares joyfully in this celebration. Everyone enjoys doing extra things for people and giving in their own way. The Student Council gave a tree which was placed in the foyer to help instill in the student body the Spirit of Christmas. Soon after the tree was given to the student body, the student body had a chance to give, also. It was asked to participate wholly in a toy drive for the poor. The Junior class was next to follow suit by decorating the gymnasium for the Sylvania Children’s Party. Many classes were preparing plays to present to the student body; one class even answered the letters written to Santa Claus. Lynn Stackhouse and Ken Inkrott reigned as King and Queen over the Christmas Ball. Happiness is a Merry Christmas’’ for Lucy and her friend. Key Club sells Christmas Trees to merry patrons of Ottawa and Glandorf. 53 Peg Brown leads a group of girls in a song. Frank Warren, Master of Ceremonies. Talented Titans Triumph The King Quintet took second place at the talent show. 54 Ed Mason impersonates Bill Cosby. Ed Daniel playing his guitar. Many of the guests gather to comment on the decorations. Jr. - Sr. Prom On Saturday evening, May 11, 1968, the Junior Class presented “Gone With The Wind” to the Senior Class. Everyone braved the stormy and inclement weather to attend the gala activities. At the dinner Jack Williams served as Master of Ceremonies; Paula Umberger, Jr. Class President, welcomed the Seniors and Jeff Vondcr-Embse, Sr. Class President, accepted the welcome for the Seniors. Mr. Clark and Mr. Wright gave brief “sketches” of humorous happenings at O-G. Following the dinner, the guests went to the gymnasium where they found a beautiful Southern setting before their eyes. David B. and Sharon L. are about to enter the mansion. 55 Some sat to chat with friends. Becky L. entertained her friends with a talc. Chris Ruhe and Larry Kliina represented the Southern slave Carol Tenwalde and Bruce Stowe were caught by the photographer owners and were at the door to welcome those attending. as they enjoyed the Southern atmosphere. The Junior Class Presents 56 The Mack Finch Band provided the music for the evening’s festivities from the Riverboat S. S. O’Hara. Everyone enjoyed dancing beneath the blue skies of the deep South. “Gone With The Wind” Smiles permeated the atmosphere. Punch was served to all. Enjoyment was found in watching others, too. 57 “By George, She’s really got it!' Mij Fair Ladq Henry Higgins Eliza Doolittle Colonel Pickering Alfred P. To provide equal representation at conventions, each class is divided equally into either the Blue party or Gold party by the Student Council. Each homeroom is considered the city level of politics. Each class is the county level and the state level is represented by the entire party. Candidates are eliminated until one candidate for each office of each party exists. Their idea proceeded to back the plavers and involve the student body in extra-curricular activities. Sue Gershutz. Peg Wilson, and Peg Brown, under the guidance of Miss Holder, organized the TITAN block. 80 C. Karl and M. Frisch—Production Editors, L. Recker Editor, Mrs. Smith-—Ad visor, S. Their judge awarded them a “good” rating. The Clarinet Choir also participated in the State Solo and Ensemble Contest. They earned a “superior” rating in this annual event. The Stage Band participated in many activities during the 1967-68 school year. Its eighteen members attended two clinics: one at Defiance and one at Lima. These occasions gave them an opportunity to learn more about making music to please many different kinds of audiences, as well as the chance to play before persons from these two towns, and be criticized and complimented by experienced judges. The band also provided musical accompaniment for the All-School Musical. At the Cabaret Concert in May, they played several numbers in concert, and made music for dancing afterward.
