Mrs. Dorothy Roose Commercial B. G.S. U., B.S. Shorthand, bookkeeping, and typing are three of the subjects offered by Ottawa-Glandorf’s Commercial Department. Students in this course of study learn basic office skills and are prepared to seek a career in the business field when they are graduated. College Prep students are urged to take a personal typing course which is also offered by the Commercial Department of OGHS. This department has something to offer every student at O-G. The Science Department offers young scientists the chance to experiment in the fields of earth science, general science, biology, chemistry, and physics. O-GHS Faculty Mrs. Marilyn Siebenick is a recent addition to O-G's office staff. In addition to assisting in the principal's office, she is the secretary for the guidance department and a study hall monitor. The Library, under the supervision of Miss Karen Smith, has an excellent supply of reference books, magazines and novels for the O-G student. That its facilities are well-used is evidenced by an average of half the student body visiting the library every day. Ottawa-Glandorf's Music Department includes a girls' chorus and mixed chorus, concert and stage bands, and a wind ensemble. In addition to giving several concerts during the year, the wind ensemble and chorus both participated in statewide contests. The band also presents a cabaret concert in the spring. The Physical Education Departments are under new direction this year. The students have been kept busy with such activities as basketball, volleyball, calisthenics, and dancing. Included in O-G's Social Studies Department are world history, American history, American government, sociology, and economics classes. Students learn the economic, social and political aspects which affect today's world, for as Mr. Balas often quotes, Those who refuse to learn from history are condemned to repeat it. English is the basis for all subjects. The teachers in this department not only instruct students in grammar, but also give their pupils a good background in American and English literature. O-G's future thespians and public speakers learn the tricks of the trade in speech and drama classes offered in the high school. O-G offers one classical language, Latin, and two modern foreign languages. Spanish and French, to its students. In addition to learning the language, students also learn about the Roman, French, and Spanish cultures.
