THUNDERBOLT 67 Ottawa-Glandorf High School Ottawa, Ohio Volume III In Memory of Perhaps in this neglected spot is laid Some heart once pregnant with celestial fire; Hands that the rod of an empire might have swayed. Or waked to ecstasy the living lyre........ Gerald Nienberg Born - November 30, 1949 Died - August 27, 1966 Dennis L. Verhoff Born - February 9, 1949 Died - August 27, 1966 Charles H. Bockrath Born - May 1, 1949 Died - August 27, 1966 Thomas Gray Foreword Knowledge, friendships, fun, and achievements all enter into our world at Ottawa-Glandorf High School. All are important and each helps us to be well-rounded students. In our future, we hope the knowledge we have gained will still be retained. And we also hope that the 1967 Thunderbolt will help to recall the friendships we’ve made, the fun we’ve had, and the many achievements we have conquered this year at Ottawa-Glandorf. New faces and new ideas have stimulated new interests of the students. The faculty members not only teach the students, but offer guidance and assistance to the O-G teenager. Efforts of the faculty have certainly made O-G one of the top-ranking schools (in sports and scholastics) in this area. K(tKI ((| Compliments of CARL'S BARBER SHOP Ottawa-Glandorf Administrators The Board of Education members — Seated: Virgil Ellerbrock, Vice-President; Robert Weis, President; Leslie Ratliff, Superintendent; Carl Frick, Clerk. To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony. My Symphony by William Henry Channing 1810 - 1884 Mr. Leslie Ratliff Congratulations to this year’s THUNDERBOLT staff and advisor, Mr. Gossman, on the fine manner in which this project was undertaken. I'm certain pleasant recollections of the time and efforts expended are yours and the knowledge of satisfactory completion fulfills your personal challenge. The young history of O-G does not permit foundations of depth on its own. But there are underlying traditions of the home, church, and the communities which allow a wealthy supply. May our students learn understanding of these and extend contributions of their own. For yours is the responsibility to learn, to learn that you may learn to live. Thomas G. Wright B. SENIORS Compliments of FREY'S The Senior Class of 1967 was a great one—scholastically, athletically, and individually. For Seniors, It was a busy and productive year, and of course, a very memorable one. The Senior musical, “Music Man”, was a class effort in which the class united itself for one last project before the division brought about by graduation. There were many tears shed at graduation, for this class will long be remembered as one of the best that O-G ever had. The Junior Class has concerned itself mainly with making money to finance the Junior-Senior Prom. This enterprising class has held a candy sale, several record hops and have taken on the big job of managing the concession stands at various athletic functions. The Sophomore Class has copped most of the class competition awards this past year. Their float won the homecoming contest and they were awarded the prize for room decoration on color day. This class is trying to get a head start on money-making for the prom next year by sponsoring record hops. The Freshman Class, although just beginning their high school years, has made a good showing for themselves. The class has sponsored a record hop and also held a cake raffle at one of the basketball games. In the cheer contest, sponsored by the cheerleaders, the Freshman took first place. Here is a well-rounded view of the academic and social activities of the students of Ottawa-Glandorf High School, from Pep Rallie to Proms. Compliments of UNVERFERTH UNVERFERTH O-G Students Receive Peggy Daub and Mary Laudick were chosen to attend the 1967 session of Buckeye Girls State by the American Legion Auxiliary of Ottawa. Honors Diane Ashton, a senior, was chosen by the other cheerleaders, to be the Cheerleader of the Year, and was awarded a trophy at the winter sports assembly. Ken Inkrott and Frank Warren were selected as delegates to the 1967 Buckeye Boys State, which helps these boys to learn about governmental functions in an enjoyable manner. This year, as in the past, the top ten per cent of the graduating class was honored instead of a valedictorian and saluta-torian. Twelve seniors, Kathy Inkrott, Judy Schroeder, Eileen Geer, Diane Ashton, Linda Utrup, Beverly Beckett, Becky Miller, Bill Croy, Sam Stowe, Bill Roeder, Mike Stackhouse, and Pam Shinkle were honored at commencement exercises. 44 BILL CROY was elected the Octo- ber Student of the Month for his achievements in football and for his hard work on Homecoming. His outstanding achievements in wrestling won for CLIFF PATTERSON the title of January Student of the Month. O-GHS Students of the Month The December Student of the Month was DOROTHY BURGEL. She placed in the National Wool Sewing Contest. This year, members of the Student Council decided to choose a Student of the Month at the close of each month. It was their intention to elect some person from the whole student body who had done something to make the name of O-G greater. Seven students were named for this honor and the Student Council hopes to continue selecting Students of the Month in following years. Student of the Month for March was BILL KREINBRINK, who was a member of the All-Ohio String Orchestra. A great athlete, BILL ROE-DER was elected April Student of the Month for his fine track accomplishments and for receiving a scholarship. For his outstanding achievements in basketball DAVE RUHE was chosen the Student of the Month for November. DAVE BUCKLAND was named Student of February for all the hard work he did as junior conces sions manager. 45 Terrific Titan Talents Charlie Brown, he's a clown pantomined by Jane Schroeder, Ron Kruse, Joanne Siefker, Nancy Wilson and Nancy Schweller. Master of Ceremonies, Mark Bollinger uses his cue cards. Drummers Gary Frey, Charlie Goodkin and Bruce Cox rap out a foot-stomping beat. O-G's answer to Bill Cosby, Gary Ellerbrock. Dona, Dona, Dona sung by Sue Gerschutz, Sandy Weis, Peg Brown, Ruth Ruen, Helen Kuhlman and Mary Laudick. Ottawa-Glandorf Spirits” This year the tradition of the Spirits” was carried out. Bev Beckett, Ron Black, Cathy Borchers, Becky Miller, and Bill Plummer were the Spirits and, as last year, spent many hard hours planning and at work congratulating and wishing good luck to many of the clubs and students of O-G. Of course, the Spirits” also made signs urging the football, crosscountry, basketball, wrestling, track, and baseball teams to victory. Any Friday during the fall or winter, it was no surprise to see chickens, toilets or even a refrigerator in the cafeteria. In the hurry, signs were often made quickly with the use of spray paint and letters. Here, Bill sprays a letter the Spirits had forgotten. Just like any other Titan fan the Spirits really wanted to beat Shawnee. Cathy made this sign wishing the DECA members Good Luck at the State convention. To make it easier and faster, one would tear and the other tape--Becky tears while Ron tapes. Bev holds a sign congratulating O-G superiors in the Science Fair. 47 Touchdowns, Tiaras, and Traditions The 1966 Homecoming Court included: Freshman attendant, Lois Deters, Junior attendant, Nancy Croy, Queen Becky Miller; Senior attendant, Sue Fortman; Sophomore attendant, Diane Hermiller. On October 8, 1966, Ottawa-Glandorf held its third annual homecoming. The homecoming festivities began with a parade which started at 7:00 P.M. in downtown Ottawa, and continued to the football field. The Titan Marching Band and the Commettes participated in the parade, and each class entered a float. The general theme for the floats was song titles. The Sophomore class showed what underclassmen can do by taking first prize for their float, I've got a Panther by the Tail”. The Seniors received second prize for their float, Climb Every Mountain . Adding to the pre-game festivities was the Junior High Band who entertained the capacity crowd with songs from Mary Poppins . The O-G fans celebrated their victory over Paulding at a dance held in the gym the following night sponsored by the Student Council. The 1965 Homecoming Queen, Darlene Croy, escorted by Bill Cutlip. Climb Every Mountain was the title of the Seniors' float which won second prize in the Homecoming competition. 50 The Monogram Club held on Thursday, an exciting field day on May 4. After everyone had changed, the events started. Among many relays included a piggyback relay, a water and balloon relay. Then there were dashes and a bicycle race. The featured attractions were the powder-puff football games, Seniors vs. Juniors and Sophomores vs. Freshmen. The boys participated in soccer games also. Contests in such field events as broad jump, discus, shot, high jump were also held. Last but not least, the specialty event was held, a greased-pig contest. After totaling all the scores, the Juniors won, followed by the Seniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen in that order. All those who participated in the field day had a lot of fun. Monogram Club Holds Field Day Seniors won this splashing contest! Marilyn Kistler atop Dan Sagar mount up speed to finish. Pump harder, you guys! And Peg Brown kicks a high one. The Jr. Sr. girls tied, fifty to fifty. Oh, it's dirty! But Jane Salsburey won the specialty event for the freshmen. Dashes were also competed in. mA 51 Not a care in the world! Two guns? I'm not that dangerous! Gee, this is fun! 4 Nothin' like takin' it easy. Seniors Hold Sadie Hawkins’ Dance On Saturday, November 12, 1966, the Seniors held the annual Sadie Hawkins dance. Music was provided by the Senior combo, The Cymbols, and everyone had a rollicking good time in their new fangle giddups. 52 The Cymbols beat our some corny tunes for a nutty dance. Christmas Happenings at O-G Many activities occurred around Christmas time this year at Ottawa-Glan-dorf. The active DECA Club sponsored a Toys for Tots campaign. At one of the pep rallies, Tom Maidlow, dressed as Santa, urged everyone to bring in usable toys. A Christmas assembly was also held and the Chorus and Band both gave performances. Several students dramatized the reading of The Night Before Christmas, and members of the drama class presented a gay Christmas skit. The Student Council held the annual Christmas dance, The Holiday Ball, on December 30, 1966. Goodies from Santa! While visions of sugar plums danced 'round their head's Peace on Earth , a mural painted by members of the Art club for the Holiday Ball. On Saturday evening, May 13, 1967, the Junior -Senior Prom, Sayonara , began with a delicious banquet held in the Glandorf gymnasium. At nine o'clock the O-G gymnasium was transformed into a beautiful Oriental scene. Cherry blossoms enhanced a covered bridge at the entrance to the Prom. Chinese girls appropriately added to the atmosphere, while beautiful murals decorated the walls. Parachutes hung from the ceiling gave the pagoda effect to the decorations, as did the building where refreshments could be obtained. Afterwards food and games were provided at the Rod Gun club. Next everyone enjoyed dancing at My Place. Everyone, though tired at the end, had a very entertaining evening. Eileen Geer and Paul Wisser were caught by the photographer as they stopped to chat. 55 Delicious refreshments could be obtained from a pagoda-like stand during the evening. 56 Seniors Play to Sell-Out Crowds Goodnight my Someone Pickalittle, talkalittle, pickalittle, talkalittle, cheep, cheep, cheep, talkalot pickalittle more. The Student Council, this year, set up a different way of running elections. The new procedure was patterned off of Boys' State and Girls' State. The new method was introduced so as to create more of an interest in elections. Each homeroom was a city divided into a Blue and Gold party from which party leaders were chosen. The county was the whole class and at the conventions a county chairman was chosen from each party. Similarly, the state was the whole school. At the Gold and the Blue conventions state party leaders were chosen. This procedure was hard to understand at first, but later seemed to result in more interest and involvement in the elections. Cathy Karl and Barb Dickinson, as state party leaders, led the campaigns. Some of these groups, such as the Latin and Spanish clubs, hold their meetings during school. Others, such as the Monogram and Library clubs, meet after school to plan projects and parties. Still others, such as the DECA club, provide contests in which members can participate for many awards. These extra-curricular clubs also give the student a time for fellowhips with other students having the same interests. The clubs are an excellent activity for the students who are willing to participate in them.
