HISTORY On a sunny September rnornmg 1n 1941 Barry Greene Andrew Short Mar garet and Betty Beach Charles Anderson Betty Bump Lawrence Trask Janet Holbrook Ela1ne M1ller and Mary Jensen bravely entered the flrst grade at Otego Central School and began the happlest 12 years of the1r young l1ves In our second year we learned about the Ind1ans as well as gammg a know ledge of tell1ng tune and good health hab1ts FO11OW1Hg that we began our bus1ness tra1n1ng by constructmg a store and post off1ce W1th the help of Betty Bump's toy cash reg1ster we learned the f1ne art of maklng change We also had a play en t1tled The Tom Thumb Weddlng wh1ch was presented before the publ1c and was very well rece1ved Betty Bump was the brlde and Stanley Purdy was the groom Roy Perk1ns and Sh1rley Lent Jomed us 1n our th1rd year In the fourth and f1fth grades we were 1n1t1ated 1nto the myster1es of long d1v1s1on at the same t1me absorbmg some Anclent H1story In the f1fth grade we 1nvaded the S011eSS garden Next 1n the slxth grade we began to reallze that we had come halfway up the tra1l of learmng and the best was yet to come Jane H1lf1ger Jomed us th1s year We w1ll always remember the seventh grade for Just as we were begmmng to feel really worldly w1se and soph1st1cated 1n1t1at1on reared 1ts ugly head On the fateful day we were hum1l1ated paddled soaked electrocuted and otherw1se tortured at the hands of the w1ll1ng sen1ors We were Jomed by Joan Slmmons and Clyde Norton 1n our seventh year Mrs Sawyer and Mr Maclntyre were our Homeroom adv1sors As seven 1S followed by exght we started out our e1ghth year w1th Mr G1eslmann and M1ss Re1nhe1mer as our adv1sors Durmg th1s year our ma1n event was the long awa1ted tr1p to Howe Caverns Pat Veen Pat Barwood and Bob Halstead Jomed us th1s year At last we reached our Freshman year We held our flrst class dance 1n March w1th mus1c by The Santa Fe R1ders Jean DeMarr1as Jomed our ranks as a freshman Our class adv1sors were Mr Hover and Mrs Survlllo We added the f1na1 member to our rolls 1n our sophmore year when B111 Coote Jomed us from Waterv1lle We had a dance 1n February w1th rnuslc by Jack Forsythe Our class adv1sors were Mrs Dunne and Mr MacMullen H1gh po1nts 1n our Jumor year were the selectxon of class r1ngs 1n October and two dances 1n November and February w1th rnuslc by the Woodhull Boys We were becom1ng f1nanc1ally successful nett1ng a good prof1t from dances a spaghetu supper and magazme subscr1pt1on sales Mrs Henderson and Mr Bartholomew were our adv1sors At last we were nearmg the end of our school career as we became w1se and solemn sen1ors w1th 11 years of school memor1es beh1nd us We held our f1rst dance 1n September w1th L1nus Houck and our second U1 March w1th Ern1e Russ We presented our sen1or play entltled C1ement1ne Th1s productxon was a unammous success both f1nanc1ally and 1n the fun we had present1ng It As the Yearbook goes to press we are eagerly countmg the days 't1ll our semor tr1p to New York and Washmgton After our tr1p we w1ll be lookmg forward for that June mght when we w1ll rece1ve our hard earned d1p1omas It IS then that we w1ll reallze that although one phase of our l1ves 15 over yet we have the ster11ng memor1es of our school careers to guxde us over the uncerta1n path wh1ch hes ahead . 1 .v 9 ' 1 a .9 3 I I Q , - , . .v . , ' ' ' ll I . a . 1 J . , . . . 0 , - , . CLASS PROPHESY Upon return1ng from a harrow1ng fore1gn ass1gnment of 15 years durat1on I dec1ded to V1S1t or at least look 1n on the members of my graduatmg class of '53 As I flew over the K1llme1er Ranch 1n Unad1lla I could detect two strong boys operat1ng the tractors and dear Margaret wr1t1ng her col umn for the Unad1lla T1mes on how to preserve food properly Presently a sharp l1mous1ne convert1ble drove up out front w1th a mus1cal peep There was dear old Betty Beach just com1ng home from New York for the week end She IS a personnel d1rector 1n a large concern on Wall Street now On up the fam111ar valley was the c1ty of Wellsbrldge What's th1S? Sh1rley's Fashlon Shop! Could that be the Shlrley Lent I graduated w1th'? Why yes' There she IS now w1th that br1ef case gett1ng 1n that yellow roadster A l1ttle farther up the road I not1ced about 50 cars l1ned 1n rows very sys temat1cally Hmm 'Shorts Used and New Cars I belleve that Andrew once told me he would l1ke to do sometlnng shady for a change I d1dI'l't th1nk he was ser1ous Isn't that Larry Trask? That car he 15 gettlng out of belongs to an 1nsurance 1nvest1gator for Lloyds of London Well lt looks l1ke Otego 1S a thr1v1ng Clty now My f1rst encounter upon landmg my a1rcraft was Mayor Perk1ns who greeted me warmly I found from h1m that Jean DeMarr1as had made the A1r Force a career and was now tot1ng the 1ns1gn1a of a vlajor Charley Anderson had been 111 town the week before w1th l'us team He 1S now a commerc1al entertamer for Gymnast1cs Bob Halstead and Barry Greene are 1n partnersh1p They own a large shop for sell1ng and repa1rmg road and farm machmery B111 Coote d1d well He 15 1n New York now He 1S a Doctor of Chem1stry and oddly enough h1s lab orator1es are d1rectly across from Betty Beach's 0ff1Ce on Wall Street Clyde Norton and Lloyd St1lson have kept pretty close to home Lloyd has a photography stud1o and Clyde 1S the manager of Norton's Farm Serv1ce 1n West Oneonta Mayor Perk1ns then gave me fly1ng d1rect1ons to reach the Bett1ol Estate near Morr1s and bade me ad1eu Shortly I set my Shlp down 1n a closely cut hay f1eld and Betty came rusnmg out to greet me She was st1ll a model Wlfe and mother but she was by no means neglect1ng her career as model for sports clothes for the Oneonta T V stat1on for she was 1n f1ne shape for the Job She told me that Pat Veen was the d1et1t1an for the Fox Hosp1tal and the Oneonta H1gh School Pat Barwood 15 now pull1ng and push1ng sw1tches for the telephone company 1n Oneonta Few m1stakes are made now a days Janet Holbrook IS now 1n charge of the 1nter1or decorat1on department for Bresee's Jane H1lf1ger's pos1t1on as a Rockette 1n New York C1ty's famous team keeps her 1n shape for her golf lessons Monday morn1ngs at the country club on Long Island Joan S1mmons 1S now s1tuated 1n the heart of Manhattan She has a prosper1ng beauty salon there Ela1ne M1ller IS very busy now days She 15 the coun selor and arranger 1n a love lorn's Matr1mon1al Bureau near Delh1 After a del1c1ous d1nner w1th Betty and her fam1ly I proceeded to return to New York for my next asslgnment .v 1 'Q - 1 . . . . . . 9 . . .. . . . ll. a ' .9 - . . . . . . , .
