K He.. enior Class President's Address Mr. Faust, Members of the Faculty, Parents, Classmates and Friends: VVhat should I do with my life? VVhere should I seek emp'oyment? VVl1at type of work am I best suited for? Should I further my education? These ques- tions have long been familiar to us all. They puzzle some of us and are answered with relative ease by others. Nevertheless, they are difficult and worrisome ques- tions. Choosing wisely for the future presents a challenge to each one of us here on the stage tonight. While in Oswego High we learned many things that will help us to choose wisely. We were taught by experienced and well educated teachers who once had to answer those questions themselves. This teaching enabled many students to discover a talent that they possessed whether it be in the field of mathematics science or art. Now that we are leaving these teachers, we are more or less inde- pendent as far as educational guidance. We would like to thank them sincerely for their patience and kindness to us during the past four years. The many subjects that we studied in O. H. S. gives us a varied background of preliminary learning. The science courses developed the orderly mind that is so necessary in the world today. By developing a scientific approach to problems we learned to observe, analyze and conclude many situations. I'm sure that this will help us face the stern tests that lie ahead in the laboratory of life. The four years of English that we all studied helped us to secure a keen knowledge of our native tongue. We also developed a cultural background by learning to appreciate and enjoy the classical literature of the world. In our history courses we learned about our heritage from the bloody bat- tles of Lexington and Concord to the horrible stories of the Korean conflict. We were taught to appreciate our country more by studying the devastating conditions in some of the countries abroad. Not only did we gain wisdom in the classrooms, but also through the broad extra curricular program that was at our disposal, we developed self assurance, poise and personality. Iloys and girls alike learned to work together as a team and to take wins and losses in stride without contempt or bitterness toward the opposition. This experi- ence on the playing field will aid us greatly so that we might take our place in society and face all the problems that come our way in a sporting manner. In music, art and student government organizations we became interested in various hobbies and crafts that will benefit us as we grow older. In the serv- ice organizations in the school, many of our boys learned ways of becoming use- ful citizens through their services to the school and community. During this well rounded educational period, we can rest assured that we have benefited by the experience we received, that will undoubtedly make us assets to the community and to the nation. We hope to have learned to work for the betterment of society, bearing in mind the idea that money isn't everything. It is possible that from this class will come men and women who will hold key posts in government organizations. These people will be able to look back on a fine high school background and work for the good of the organization rather than the individual. ..32.. , - - Y. ,,,, , , .-.T.ah ara OX lt is said that Most of the world's ills are brought about by IW of the people in it. We feel that another 171 of the people can correct these ills by working for the betterment of society. lf we bring the ideals of love of country and of fellow man into our work, we will be accomplishing much in the line of democracy. There is much need for straight thinking citizens in the world today and through our education here in Oswego High, we feel that we have learned in a small way, the correct manner in which to govern ourselves in the years ahead. lf we bring the principles that we have learned here in school into those fields, we will have better accomplished the purpose for which we were created. Thus we prepare tonight to embark on a new phase of life, bearing in mind the thought of Spreading the ideals of democracy, citizenship and good examples in the future. May we impress upon the juniors, the necessity of a well educated youth and challenge them to strive toward the highest goals while in O.H.S. Mike Watts N-Q. .5-BIZ, ff .lunior Response Mr. Faust, members of the faculty, parents, guests and members of the class of ,552 l am deeply honored tonight to represent the Junior Class in saluting the Senior Class. Our sincerest congratulations go to its members and advisors for the splendid achievements accomplished during the past four years. The energy and zeal of this class is evidenced in the many scholastic and extra-curricular honors bestowed upon its members. Yes, this class has rightly deserved these honorsg but for greater value to the school and to themselves has been their inspirational leadership. During the past three years, the class of '55 has been an example both on the athletic field and in the classroom. Their consistent efforts to make Oswego High a better place in which to learn, deserve our unfailing respect and appreciation. lt is with such admiration, that we, as next year's seniors, shall attempt to attain the heights they have reached in good citizenship and sportsmanship. This indeed will be a worthy goal as they have attained a very high standard. As we accept their challenge, we wish the graduates of l955 complete suc-Q cess in the world which they will soon enter. They know what is to be done. We know they can do it.MayAhnighty God, who has bestowed His blessings on them, continue to do so in years to come. MFG OX The ocial History of the Class of 1955 Upon entering Oswego High School in September, l952, we the Sophomores found ourselves feeling quite ambitious and obsessed with a need to raise money. VVe had heard such wonderful tales about the Previous Junior Prom, that we decided ours had to be as good-if not better! So, being eager to make this an- ticipated event possible, we held two very financially successful dances. One of them was called the Sophomore Slate Date . By the end of our Sophomore year we had raised about S150 for our treasury. We still needed a great deal more money, thus as Juniors, we sponsored the Footnote Hall and the Gridiron Glide . We really enjoyed our next big undertaking - The Junior Variety Show. lt was adjudged the finest ever staged. Asa last attempt at pushing our goal over the top before the Pre-Prom, we held a St. Patrick Dance. As a result of all our activities, we found ourselves in a position to put on a beautiful Prom. Using Evening in Paris as our entrancing theme, we en- circled the entire gym with flowers. A Paris mood was created by a miniature Iiiffel Tower and water-spouting fountain. Thus our junior Year concluded with our moving up into the role of Deans of the Student Body. The job of make ing the last year a success challenged us, as it had spurred our predecessors. Now as Seniors we are happy to look back and remember our extremely successful Senior Class Play, My Little Margie , starring Alice Murray. We can never forget the realistic struggle between the assassin, Dan Stergius, and Margie's hoy-friend, Freddie QNorm VVhittenj. You would never have believed it unless you saw it happen. Donna McNally, as Mrs. Odetts, rolling on the stage wearing roller skates! We had one final need for money as Seniors-the traditional Senior Class gift to the school. This cause was aided by a Jr.-Sr. Basketball Game and Dance. -Featuring The llasin Street Five. liven though our high school days are now completed, we believe the world still holds many good things for us in the years to come. Upon receiving our diplomas, each one of us will follow his own path in life. Our success alone depending on what we as individuals want to make of our lives. Now in depart- ing from our dear Alma Mater, we leave behind many friends and teachers who have instilled in us confidence, knowledge, and the value of integrity when we encounter the world's Godgiven opportunities. ..41... CIPGJOX ' Music History The Senior Class of 1955 has been very active in musical affairs. Every year the Philomelians and Beta Mu Gammas who are the musical groups in Os- wego High take part in the annual Spring and Christmas Concert. Under the direction of Mrs. Beryl Hill, the group has entertained such organizations as the New York State Teachers Association, the Rotary Club at the Hotel Pontiac, and the Oswego Teachers at their annual Christmas Parties in the Hotel Pontiac. During the past two years, the choral groups have participated in the Junior Variety Shows and the D. E. Deviltry Show. In March, 1953 Philos and Beta Mus along with the Small Ensemble entertained the students at the Oswego State Teachers College at an assembly program. After the performance, the students entertained the singing groups at a tea in the lounge of the Student Union. VVhen Christmas City was organized in 1952, Mrs. Hill was put in charge of all the music arrangements. Therefore, Philomelians and Beta Mu Gammas were asked to participate in the singing at Santa's Workshop. During the Christ- mas season the choirs also sang at the Nativity scene in the East Park, after which was held the annual Philo-Beta Mu Party. The singing groups have promoted two visiting musical organizations. One of which was the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Efrem Kurtz, with Theodore Lettvin as guest pianist. The other group was the American Male Chorus, directed by Lewis Bullock. Here in Oswego High, we have a selected group of boys and girls who make up a group called the Small Ensemble. It is composed of members of Philo- mleians and Beta Mu Gammas. lt has taken part in many of the same activities as Philo's and Beta Mus. Under Mrs. Hill's ability as a director, they have be- come a well-blended group not only musically, but also spiritually. During the Christmas season of 1953 the Small Ensemble entertained for the Rotary Club at their luncheon held in the Hotel Pontiac and the Oak Hill Me- morial Association at their annual Christmas party. On Christmas Eve they went caroling to different places, including the Oswego Hospital. On March 12, 1953 the Small Ensemble presented a short program of select- ed music at the VVest Baptist Church which was celebrating its centennial. ln February, 1954, the Oswego Players, presented Gilbert and Sullivan's opera, The Mikado. Mrs. Hill, because of her superb musical ability and wide experience, was chosen as director. Members of the Philomelians and the Beta Mu Gamma were chosen to sing in the chorus. Those who participated in The Mikado were Marilyn Barsuch, Carolyn Godden, Marie Fontana, Whitney Coe, Rudolph Chodubski, Joe Falise, and Norman Griswold. This production was the player's first attempt at a musical. It was very successful. On April 30, 1955 the Oswego County Teachers Association held their bi- annual conference in Robinson Auditorium. The Small Ensemble presented a short program of music in the morning for their entertainment. ln May, 1954, many of the Philomelians and Beta Mu Gamma took part in .-T 42 T , KW-,H ,-Amr YW W ,Y -.,,.,,,,- pafdblllfl' the Spring Festival at Mexico, They also participated in the annual Spring Fes- tival held each year in the Robinson Auditorium. In November of 1954, a selected group attended the All-State Sectional which was held in Mexico. The students that went gained much knowledge through their experience. Those who attended were, Nancy Deary, Peggy Armstrong, Gail Luke, Patricia Rourke, Marie Fontana, Carolyn Godden, Virginia Powell, and Kay Derousie. Also, joe Falise, Bill Silliman, Norman Manor, Dick Baker, Rudolph Choclubski, Whitney Coe. In the Spring of 1955, many of the Philomelians and Beta Mu Gammas went to Mexico to sing at the County Choir. Many of the new Philomelians and Beta Mu Gammas participated in this event. ln june of 1955, the Philomelians and Beta Mu Gammas took part in the Elk Bi-Centennial celebration at the fort. f lg,- 0 5, 43.. plll'aLl0X ,.,, K, A,,,,Y,,,,, Class Poem Forever we are leaving to enter life within a world ln which our task is set aloft, on an awful banner now unfurled. lt is for us to face and turn the vainness man has wrought by pride, To dam the everflow of hate that would en- gulf us in its tide. Our voices blend as one strong echo that stimulates the mind to reach That lofty goal, that lesson great, that supreme purpose we must teach And banish from this perished land deceitful hate, the foe of peace, That in the heart of erring man shall spring a love and sin shall cease. A fortress stands no stronger than integrity of youth. A love no brighter burns than for freedom of the soul, For liberty, Created in the sculptored form of truth, Remain unchanged within the heart from its decisive mold.
