U- OSSIAN HIGH SCHOOL OSSIAN, INDIANA EDITOR ASSOCIATE EDITORS BUSINESS iANAGER art editor Advisor T donaghy J. SNARR J. HUNTER J. McBRIDE RSniTH C FULLNART We are now taking the final step that brings us face to face with many new problems and also into contact with new people and per- sonalities. To be able to make this step you must have learned your school lessons well. Not only math, English, and history, but what you are taught through sports, clubs and organizations, your home and church, and everyday personal experiences. It is in these places, particularly school, that your character and personality is developed. These attributes are called the quality of a person. It is the quality of person you become that marks your place in society and the world. Yes, Ossian teaches you not only the basics but the essentials. Although many probably could not understand these science experiments, it was still enjoyed by everyone. This traveling high school choir gave us not only but comedy. OUR GYM BUSTLES WITH ACTIVITY The activities that took place in our gym during the past year have been thoroughly enjoyed by the student body — grades and high school. School activ- ities such as intramural basketball, to such outside activities as music and singing to informative talks about science, the atom, etc., have all added to our ever-widening interests and knowledge. The championship games of intramural basketball were hard fought and hard won. The Latin beat and many Negro spirituals were introduced to the student body by these two fine musicians and singers. OUR ANNUAL FESTIVITIES The King and Queen and candidates for the Spring Enchantment Dance were GIRLS — top to bottow: Queen Karen Kreigh, Mickey Hower, Sally Woodward. Gay Lynn Walker. BOYS — top to bottom: King Skip Melton. Junior Franke. Terry Donaghy, Mike Andes. The cafeteria provides an excellent place to dance. The record hops were enjoyed by everyone. BOTH WORK . AND FUN. Co-Sponsored by SPRINGER HATCHERY AND COMPANY Ossian, Indiana and GLOBE HATCHERY Ossian, Indiana No, Mrs. Cox, it ' s not Thursday, we ' re just cold. ' 16 From the grades through into high school, a basic requirement is English. We have many forms of English at Ossian, ranging from Latin, journalism, speech, and basic fundamental Eng- lish. Because of the importance of correct writing and speech in our present world, English should be thoroughly studied by all college or job bound students. Most any day you peek into English Comp. class, you wil scene between Judy and Sally. It looks like someone is comfortable Co-Sponsored by MAHNENSMITH TRUCKING SERVICE Ossian, Indiana and JIM MAHNENSMITH INS. Ossian, Indiana The English Lit. class studied many varied and interesting subjects during the semester. 17 Knowledge of radioactivity is important today. OSSIAN SCIENCE DEPARTMENT IS Science is, no doubt, one of the most important subjects that can be taken in high school. It begins by teaching the fundamentals in General Science, working on into Biology and finally into the complex chemistry and physics. College bound students should take this complete selection. Our lab is the finest in the county and among the best in the entire state. Such benefits promote the students ' interest in science and will also help later on in college lab work. Although there is an excellent selection of lab equipment, more is being bought all the time so that we may keep up with the changing times. Miss Amsler ' s freshman bi- ology class studies about the many forms of animal and plant life in the world. 18 fipimtfimUfCflVV V ' -; -( ' ' r-Jlf T,T i li ' Tnp VTT7 U ' The chemistry class has studied very hard for the year ' s final test. FINEST IN COUNTY The basic fundamentals of science are taught in general science. MATH Mr. Windmiller is looking over his PL Geometry class. LEADS THE WAY TO FUTURE SCIENTIFIC TRAINING We have very fine math facilities at Ossian. Our program at Ossian varies from book- keeping and business arithmetic up to college algebra. Top notch teachers show us how to use the latest facilities to speed up computations. The program starts in the grades with fundamental arithmetic. Algebra is offered during the Freshman year; PI. Geometry during the Sophomore year; advanced algebra during the junior year; Trig for the first semester and college algebra for the second semester of the senior year. Courses offered on the side are general arith., bookkeeping, bus. law and arith. The business arithmetic class listens at- tentively to Mr. FuUhart. Co-Sponsored by LEONA ' S BEAUTY SHOP Ossian, Indiana and YAGER BARBER SHOP Ossian, Indiana I SOCIAL STUDIES INCREASES WORLD UNDERSTANDING The study of social science, be it history or modern problems, has no equal in teaching understanding and appreciation. By seeing the mistakes of the past, future ones may be avoided. Studying our true American heritage is a rich and rewarding experience. Government taught us the whys and wherefores of our constitution and laws. BUSINESS AREAS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR FUTURE CAREERS The shorthand class often uses the typing room to do their assignments. I don ' t think it will help. Leslie. This is one place speed counts, not kills. 23 HOME EC. TRAINS FUTURE HOMEMAKERS AG. The band had one of its best years in history, winning a second at Decatur, a second at the Bluffton Street Fair, a second at Harlan Days, and a third at the Mermaid Festival. They also marched in the Little League Parade and at the 4-H Fair. Half-time participation at the basketball games proved to be very enjoyable for everyone as did the Spring Con- cert. Its purpose is to create an en- thusiasm for Scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render Ser ' ice, to promote Leadership, and to develop Character in the students of America ' s secondary schools. These four qualities are the virtues most fundamental in life and most useful in society and the qualities for which we, the students of Ossian High School strive. Our chapter was chartered in 1961-62 and has become an inspirational goal for our students. 68 HONOR SOCIETY OFFICERS: President, Junior Franke; Secretary-Treas- urer, Jane Hunter; Book Chairman, Mickey Hower; Vice-President, Sally Woodward. GIRL ' S 4-H BOY ' S 4-H The Jeffersonian Maidens 4-H Club had a very suc- cessful summer under the direction of Mrs. Keith Morphew, adult leader. In the spring, an Installation Program and Mother ' s Tea were held in the school cafe- teria. During the summer, a bake sale was held to finance a trip to 4-H Camp for one of the 4-H members. In August, everyone helped decorate the 4-H Float and participated in the events at the 4-H Fair. The 4-H Club activities were many and varied this past summer. We conducted a paper drive in April, which helped boost our treasury funds considerably, and our club sold watermelons at the 4-H Fair. We plan to use this money for the expenses of all 4-H members (55 in all) to the 1963 Indiana State Fair. We also held our achievement program to aid the members in becoming acquainted with the judging standards of our 4-H Fair, and offered suggestions for improvements in their projects. We also held our ten regular meetings for the year and completed the year with a 89% attendance record. We also went together with the girl ' s club to enter the float contest which we won. All in all, I would say this has been one of the best years for the Jefferettes 4-H Club. 71 Ujr;7i. ' 7-;j7:i)r.r:JiKt ii M S. JH - STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS— FRONT ROW: T. Shafer, M. Mclntire. S. A constitution was written and adopted by the Student Council. It sponsored a mock election on election day, conducted various surveys throughout the student body, and worked toward improving an already whole- some relationship between students and faculty.
