G- Al ' Ef COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY 3 1833 01731 2403 GENEALOGY 977. 2oe 0S70R 1961 Presenting — THE 1961 ORACLE OSSIAN HIGH SCHOOL OSSIAN, INDIANA Editor THOMAS FIEDLER Associate Editor CAROLYN HOSTETTER Business Manager RUTH ANN REINHARD Advisor CHARLES FULLHART In our lives we all have some ambition, some goal we want to reach. To some it might be a college education, to others it might be a good career in one of our armed forces, or it may be owning a large business of our own. No matter what our goal, we need a guide to get us there, a stairway to climb to that goal. The stairway we are now climbing is the stairway to our high school education. Those who have walked this stairway will tell us it takes hard work, in our subjects, in our activities, in sports, in whatever we do or want, it takes work to obtain it. Along the stairway we meet many new and many different kinds of people, our teachers, our friends, our classmates, all climbing this stairway with us. Yes, it is quite a challenge to us. This, the school we now attend, is our STAIRWAY TO SUCCESS TABLE OF CONTENTS OPENING SECTION 4 CLASSES 13 FACULTY 24 SENIORS 31 UNDERCLASS 40 ACTIVITIES 62 SPORTS 77 ADVERTISEMENTS 91 The first event for the Seniors was the Bluffton Street Fair. You can come down, now, Jerry, Mr. Fullhart is gone! SENIORS ENJOY THE YEAR ' S ACTIVITIES Watch that finger, Gerry! ' Anyone for a Camel? It ' s the Roaring Twenties at Senior Night. Our editor gracefully keeps in shape. The halls are jammed and everyone knows it ' s time out from classes. SCHOOL DAYS - GOOD OLD GOLDEN RULE DAYS Our faithful photographer studies some pictures taken for the Oracle. The Juniors work hard to earn money for their Senior Trip. Basketball takes priority for the Gym ' s occupanq The 7th grade girls form a pyramid. OUR GYM SEES MANY ACTIVITIES Asbury Men ' s Choir entertains the school assembly with fine music. ■ The Court of the Sweetheart Dance consisted of Toby Kinerk, Jim Diehl, John Smith, King Dennis Buuck and Queen Gerry Adam, Patty Bauermeister, Carolyn Hostetter, and Ruth Reinhard. The theme was Wonderland by Night. The court led in a dance after the crowning had taken place. DANCING The students attended the record hops after the ball games. One of the main entertainments of the school year were the dances that were held after the ball games and the formal dances that were held in the eve nings. The students had much fun at all the dances. HELPS TO POLISH OUR PERSONALITIES The record hops provided much fun for all. Many students learned new steps and repeated old ones. JUNIOR PLAY - 1961 FATHER KNOWS BEST Please, Daddy — No rough stuff, Man ! Does everyone have as much fun in English as John does, Mrs. Tyler ? Everyone is nervous before the class pl.iy. but you still shouldn ' t bite your nails, Stan. OUR BASIC People, are you paying attention ? There are classes on both sides. 14 m They even gave speeches for their semester test ! COURSE IN SCHOOL, ENGLISH A person often is judged by the English he speaks. In our Junior-High years we learn a basic knowledge of English grammar and literature. In our first three years of high school through book reports and class discussion we apply this knowledge to our own lives. In literature we explore the lives of others through the fascinating printed word. In grammar we learn to pre- sent our thoughts in clear, meaningful, proper English. Seniors in speech and journalism not only receive a basic knowledge of public speaking but also learn journalistic techniques first-hand as they publish the school newspaper, the Bear Facts. Seniors also take one semester of English Composition. 15 m ' tmmmmm At Ossian there is a very complete Math system with many of the various courses that can be chosen. It starts with the very simple Gen. Math and extends to a tough course of Trig and College Algebra. Many students complete as much math as possi- ble. Math will help a person in all phases of life. Many will need it in the job that they choose, others will need it in the books that they keep. The housewife will use it in her cooking, the farmer uses it in figuring many things. Yes, Math is important in all of out lives. Mr. Fullhart explains the problem to the class by diagraming it on the board. MATH AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN OUR LIVES Mr. Windmiller shows M. Johnson how to worl the problem the simplest and quickest way. i All right, that will be enough of that in Mr. I FuUhart ' s class. Shame! 16 Mr. Windiniller watches as his student explains the problem to the entire class. Keith, would you mind turning around and paying attention to what is going on in class. Co-Sponsored by URBAN CITY GARAGE and STANDARD SERVICE STATION Ossian, Indiana 17 Don ' t you see it, Ross? It is right in front of your nose. HISTORY TEACHES US MANY THINGS I wonder if the Psychology Class has been able to figure out Norm yet. Miss Ross has her students explain the problems 01 in front of the class. Sponsored by THE RADIO SHACK Ossian, Indiana n sw:. Mrs. Colderbank teaches the girls how to pre- pare their meals with the least effort and money. How ' s the drapes coming, Carol? Many students wish to enter the vocational area when they finish High School. During their High School Days they study Vocational Courses for training in these areas. The selec- tions are Voc. Ag. for the boys and Voc. Home Ec. for the girls. Co-Sponsored by HOWER TOOL GRINDING and MELCHINGS MACHINE SHOP Ossian, Indiana Maybe we had better get some sleep the night before class, suppose, Dave. V Mr. Bollinger explains the importance of balancing the equation. SCIENCE AND HOW IT HELPS US Miss Amsler explains Science to the girls at the table. What have we here, some future doctors? Sponsored by OSSIAN HARDWARE Ossian, Indiana 9| Mrs. Donaghy ' s typing class keeps very busy during class time trying to master the key- board. TODAY ' S WORLD IS A BUSINESS WORLD Is it really that much fun, Lonie? 21 V ART HELPS TO ROUND OUT A STUDENT ' S SCHEDULE Gilbert tries his hand at the artistic side of school work. DRIVER ' S TRAINING HELPS TO MAKE OUR HIGHWAYS SAFE FOR THE PEOPLE Mr. Everhart explains just how car is basically run by the engine, made up of its component parts. d The girls succeed in building a pyramid. It took much time and practice to build this. OUR GYM CLASSES SEE MANY ACTIVITIES Our new trampoline entertained many students this year, not only in class but at noon also. FACULTY . . They boost us onward to our goal 24 SJk i Virginia, our school secretary, is always ready to help us with our problems concerning the office. It is up to the students themselves to chmb the stairway to success. But along the way, they must be guided by the faculty members who work with the students to help them prepare for the career they will someday take up as their life ' s work. Mr. Andes pauses a moment from his work, which is continuous. THE FACULTY LEADS STUDENTS ONWARD Mr. Lieurance, our Superintendent, performs many tasks, one of which is awarding the Cotinty Champ Trophy. 26 - MR. HARRY ANDES Social Studies MR.
