I gs.. -.-vie s 'r lll'S lill -llllAMl li WllH The Gypsy Troubador was the.operetta presented by the Senior Mixed Chorus on March 3 and 4, l949. The scene took place in a gypsy camp in a lonely countryside. Nikoli fDave Lindemannl, son of Todoro tKenny Eichlerl the ruler of the gypsy tribe of Haaren, had been permitted to acquire a college education on account of his unusual intellectual gifts. He returned to the gypsy camp from college with the ambition to become a poet, publish his writings, and marry Clare Clayton KBarbara VanSkyockl, a pretty daughter of a business man. Todoro received the announcement of his son's intentions with dismay and disgust because he had planned that his son should marry Rosita Uackie Walkerl, a charming gypsy girl, and succeed himself as ruler. Rosita was broken-hearted. Maria fShirley Goshornl, 'l'odoro's wife, tried to make him change his mind but had no suc- cess. Todoro's nephew, Vario CAutie Lewisl, a treacherous schemer, was delighted with Nik- oli's plansi He plotted to have Nikoli expelled from the tribe, so he might succeed Todoro as ruler and marry Rosita himself. Clare, her father, Henry Clayton KRich- ard Wolfei, and Mrs. Jean Jerrold tMarilyn Toddi, a designing widow who intended to marry Clayton because she thought he was rich, arrived. Vario, with the help of his former sweetheart, Elena KMaxine Papel, stole Clare's necklace and tried to shift the blame on Nikoli. Clare accused Rosita. Rosita, think- ing Nikoli had taken it took all the blame. GYPSY lllllllll llllll Nikoli, thinking Rosita had taken it, also tried to take the blame upon himself. Todoro or- dered them both out of camp by midnight. Mary Matthews CAlice l-latfieldl was always getting excited and always getting her words mixed. The whole plot of Vario's was over- heard and witnessed by Tom iBill Oggl, Nik oli's happy-go-lucky college chum, who se- cretly revealed it to Marko fArlon Johnsonl, the witty gypsy fortune teller and the clever- est man in the tribe. The two made plans to save Nikoli. Janina CMaureen Busheel, a girl of the tribe, was devoted to Marko and wanted to help them. By that time Nikoli knew Clare wasn't interested in him but only in his pros- pects of becoming a rich and famous song writer. He turned to Rosita, knowing that he still loved her, and finally persuaded her to leave the camp with him at midnight. Marko and Tom exposed Vario, whom Todoro prompt- ly expelled from the tribe. The young couple was reinstated into favor. Clare tried to win Nikoli back but failed. Nikoli was more than glad to remain with his tribe and marry Rosita. Several solos were sung by the characters and the gypsy chorus sang several songs. The dramatics was coached by Miss Glass and Mr. Gerwig, the music directed by Miss West, the dances directed by Miss Hoopengardner, and the stage decorated by Mr. Lee. Through the help and co-operation of all the teachers and students the Operefta was a great success. 7 l 't ng X ao ll Slllfl .lll l0IlS Western Union, Please was the three act comedy presented by the Junior Class on April 9 and 10, l9-48. The plot was woven around the lovable Daley family. Danny Daley, the father, was given a dime Years ago to buy a loaf of bread. He lost the dime so he left home to earn money. His wife, Jennie Daley, had to manage the household with a little help from Aunt Aurora, who was always irritable because she was deaf and dependent. Jennie's daugh- ter, Alice, had never lost faith in her father and believed that he would some- time return to them with a fortune. Jennie, in order to meet expenses, had to sell the house, but she couldn't until Danny was legally declared dead. Members of his lodge were going to have a funeral service for him, but a messenger boy brought them a telegram saying that Danny was arriving home that night, Three of Alice's girl friends, Melinda Hicks, Betty Edington, and Gertrude Grim, drove her to the airport to meet her father. A friend, Brian Foley, and some lodge members who hadn't heard of Danny's return, came to the house. The funeral was called off then. Jennie wanted to sell the house right away, but Danny decided she wasn't getting enough for it. Joe Graybell, Alice's boy friend who just got out of Yale Col- w -W4 ,o. . 1 1 i oy, 000 99 l l .Nt - 1 KN .2-! lege, helped Danny find the reason. lt was because Hal Stoddard wanted the property very badly, but didn't want to give a reasonable price for it. George Gillespie, a contractor and builder, bid against Stoddard for the property. A lawyer, Mr. Thaddeus Taylor, was hired to solve the problem. The property was sold for a reasonable amount and everything turned out right in the end with Danny off to re-wed his widow. During the season the Bears fought their way to six victories in twenty games, and provided their fans with plenty of excitement. Only two of the boys ongthe team will be lost by graduation. The aggressiveness and determination shown by the boys plus the valuable experience gained this year should materialize into victories in the following years. Eichler, a senior guard, possessed plenty of speed and drive which he used in stealing balls and tying up opponents in held balls. He was third highest scorer with 86 points. Corn, a senior center, was the tallest member of the team. He used his height to great advantage around the backboards. Johnson, junior guard, was the leading scorer with l29 points. He has a good long shot plus the ability to drive under to score. His ability to rebound off the opponents' backboard carried Ossian thru many times. Sample was playing his first year on the varsity. He has a deadly set shot which should prove valuable next year. He was second highest scorer with 91 points. Scherrer was handicapped with injuries most of the season, His drive and scrap should be a big help to the team next year. Clark, a junior center, was moved up from the 52 second team early in the year. He is a good defensive man and a great rebounder. Borror, sophomore forward, improved consider- ably as the season progressed. His one-handed shot, plus his drive, and his height should prove valuable during the next two years. Dishong, sophomore guard, was the smallest and also one of the fastest members on the team. He pos- sesses a good long shot. McGee, another sophomore guard, saw limited action, however he showed promise as a play-maker and floor general. Tom Jesse, freshman forward, was moved up from the second team about the middle of the Year. His drive and ability to score point the way to an ex- cellent future in basketball. Again this year, our principal, Mr. Benson has played no little part in the success of our basketball season. He has faithfully attended all games and sock hops, too. Attending to little, behind-the-scenes duties unassumingly and capably, he has won the respect of all of us. A friendly grin, a fighting spirit, a jolly disposi- tion, quiet, but full of enthusiasm: that's our coach, Mr. King. All too quickly we have climbed the steps, and time has come for us to depart as dignified seniors, ready to take our places in today's world. Remember our first few days in high school? When we first met our faculty, we regarded them as just teach- ers, but in the years that followed, they guided our steps and proved themselves to be unforgetable friends and kind advisors. Now that the time has come for us to be graduated, we realize that through their untiring efforts they have gained our lasting respect and appreciation. And our classmates! It seems as though the nicest part of school life was knowing them. ln future years some of the friendships we've made will drift apart, but they are all here, pictured in this, our Oracle, the friends of the class of '49, as we have always known them.
