Helen Gallmeyer and Arthur Glass joined us to make a total of thirty-one fourth graders. Miss Elaine Miller guided us through this year. Oscar Geisel, our fifth grade teacher, kept us on the right path to knowl- edge during 1940-4l. To our disappointment we lost eight friends during this year but we welcomed Robert Good, Richard Meilicke, Marcele Eoulks, Ruth Havens, and lesse Lewis. During our sixth year we lost loann Archbold, Donald Holycross, Delores Patterson, Elva Reinking, Ioyce Kincaid, and Robert Good, but David Wood, Robert Easley, and Pauline Lewis joined us to make our group a total of twenty-five. Lloyd Way was our instructor. Being the Iunior High and called underclassmen, noisy little seventh graders, etc., didn't stop us from enjoying ourselves. Of course, we were too young to realize the full meaning of December 7, l94l. During this year Ioyce Kincaid, Phyllis and Patricia Scott, Delores Patterson, and loan Archbold came back to us and Pat Shierling, Mary lo Bales, Doris Miller, Ruth Manns, Roger Stoneburner, Neil Stahl, Ierorne Lindemann, Marvin Miller, and lean Prough enrolled as new members. Iames Murray was our sponsor. As September, l942, rolled around to start another school term, the eighth grade of Ossian found itself composed of 32 pupils. During the summer We lost lean Prough, Pauline Lewis, Marvin Miller, Phyllis and Patricia Scott, but Lester Wilson, Lester Bauermeister, Dale Werling, Norman Ostermeyer, Walter Kiefer, Russell Thurber, Dorothy Werling, and Helen Gallmeyer en- rolled to swell our class. At last! The year we were looking forward to had comel Our first year in high schooll We were now freshmen! This year was a general get-acquaint ed year because it was the largest enrollment of all our l2 years. During the summer we lost Lester Wilson and Mary Io Bales. The last week in August when we started, nineteen new boys and girls anxious to know what Ossian was like, came as Greenhorns to the high school. They were Richard Clark, Mary Furthmiller, Leora Herbst, Norma lohnson, from Yoder, Ellis Mcljadden from Poe, Anna Heinrich, Dorothy Miller, loann Springer, Marcella Springer, and Robert Springer from St. Marks Lutheran, Eldora Bauerrneister, Ervin Graft, Edgar Rekeweg, and Wilmer Werling from Bethlehem Lutherang Mar- jorie Scherry and Magdalene Hilgemann from Magley. After Christmfas vaca- tion Dorothy Christman and Paul Sheets came from Elmhurst, and Mary Esther Hostetter came from Otwell. Edgar Rekeweg withdrew from school due to illness. Mrs. Doris Coblen.z, our class sponsor, also our biology teacher, shared our joys and sorrows with us, and helped us prepare for the coming years. Officers for this year were jerry Lindemann, president, Lester Bauermeister, vice-president, Ervin Graft, secretary, and Ellis McFadden, treasurer. ln our second year of high school, our enrollment was still 49. Our leader- ship was given to Miss Smith and Mr. Gerwig. We chose for entertainment a Concluded on Page 53 19

if-r' . ,SJ QR ' 'N s 'R History of the 1947 Atoms ln the year 1935-36 a group of smiling youngsters entered the Ossian school building for the first time. We had no worry on our minds for we were all happy to be starting to school, Our eager little group, guided by Miss Helena Mahnensmith, later composed the graduating class of 19117. To increase our knowledge for further education we struggled through the second grade. Miss Esther Hoopingardner, our instructor, was a living example for us. ln starting our third year we found we lost seven pupils. They were Flor- ence Schaffer, Ronald Hellolig, Velma Harris, lunior Meyers, Garnet Fuller, Lucile Carl, and Norma Bailey. To help make up this loss, David Somers, Ro- salie Haiflich, and Patricia and Phyllis Scott joined us. Our final enrollment at the end of the year was thirty. Miss Helen Archloold was our teacher. When September rolled around in l939, we found ourselves on a different side of the school building and ready to occupy the fourth grade room. By the end of the year, Dale Archloold and Maxine Miller left while Delores Patterson, 18 , 4 A? I
