We had no worry on our minds for we were all happy to be starting to school, Our eager little group, guided by Miss Helena Mahnensmith, later composed the graduating class of 19117. To increase our knowledge for further education we struggled through the second grade. Miss Esther Hoopingardner, our instructor, was a living example for us. ln starting our third year we found we lost seven pupils. They were Flor- ence Schaffer, Ronald Hellolig, Velma Harris, lunior Meyers, Garnet Fuller, Lucile Carl, and Norma Bailey. To help make up this loss, David Somers, Ro- salie Haiflich, and Patricia and Phyllis Scott joined us. Our final enrollment at the end of the year was thirty. Miss Helen Archloold was our teacher. When September rolled around in l939, we found ourselves on a different side of the school building and ready to occupy the fourth grade room. By the end of the year, Dale Archloold and Maxine Miller left while Delores Patterson, 18 , 4 A? I Helen Gallmeyer and Arthur Glass joined us to make a total of thirty-one fourth graders. Miss Elaine Miller guided us through this year. Oscar Geisel, our fifth grade teacher, kept us on the right path to knowl- edge during 1940-4l. To our disappointment we lost eight friends during this year but we welcomed Robert Good, Richard Meilicke, Marcele Eoulks, Ruth Havens, and lesse Lewis. During our sixth year we lost loann Archbold, Donald Holycross, Delores Patterson, Elva Reinking, Ioyce Kincaid, and Robert Good, but David Wood, Robert Easley, and Pauline Lewis joined us to make our group a total of twenty-five. Lloyd Way was our instructor. Being the Iunior High and called underclassmen, noisy little seventh graders, etc., didn't stop us from enjoying ourselves. Of course, we were too young to realize the full meaning of December 7, l94l. During this year Ioyce Kincaid, Phyllis and Patricia Scott, Delores Patterson, and loan Archbold came back to us and Pat Shierling, Mary lo Bales, Doris Miller, Ruth Manns, Roger Stoneburner, Neil Stahl, Ierorne Lindemann, Marvin Miller, and lean Prough enrolled as new members. Iames Murray was our sponsor. As September, l942, rolled around to start another school term, the eighth grade of Ossian found itself composed of 32 pupils. During the summer We lost lean Prough, Pauline Lewis, Marvin Miller, Phyllis and Patricia Scott, but Lester Wilson, Lester Bauermeister, Dale Werling, Norman Ostermeyer, Walter Kiefer, Russell Thurber, Dorothy Werling, and Helen Gallmeyer en- rolled to swell our class. At last! The year we were looking forward to had comel Our first year in high schooll We were now freshmen! This year was a general get-acquaint ed year because it was the largest enrollment of all our l2 years. During the summer we lost Lester Wilson and Mary Io Bales. The last week in August when we started, nineteen new boys and girls anxious to know what Ossian was like, came as Greenhorns to the high school. They were Richard Clark, Mary Furthmiller, Leora Herbst, Norma lohnson, from Yoder, Ellis Mcljadden from Poe, Anna Heinrich, Dorothy Miller, loann Springer, Marcella Springer, and Robert Springer from St. Marks Lutheran, Eldora Bauerrneister, Ervin Graft, Edgar Rekeweg, and Wilmer Werling from Bethlehem Lutherang Mar- jorie Scherry and Magdalene Hilgemann from Magley. After Christmfas vaca- tion Dorothy Christman and Paul Sheets came from Elmhurst, and Mary Esther Hostetter came from Otwell. Edgar Rekeweg withdrew from school due to illness. Mrs. Doris Coblen.z, our class sponsor, also our biology teacher, shared our joys and sorrows with us, and helped us prepare for the coming years. Officers for this year were jerry Lindemann, president, Lester Bauermeister, vice-president, Ervin Graft, secretary, and Ellis McFadden, treasurer. ln our second year of high school, our enrollment was still 49. Our leader- ship was given to Miss Smith and Mr. Gerwig. We chose for entertainment a Concluded on Page 53 19 fzfuda U '4?4 av r. Class Poem Here is the end of another year. From the class of '47 you now shall hear. We've only tried to do our best, So don't be critical in your test. First a salute to our sponsors grand., Who all through this year have maae a great stand. To Miss Hoopengardner and Mr. Gerwig. - A Go our heartiest thanks, for the small ana :ne big, And to Mr. Benson who through thick and thin, Spent a lot of his time to help us win. And to all the taculty upstairs and down, Who helped us here and all around. For Miss Logan we give a cheer. Without her there'd be no Oracle here. Miss West did a lot, here and there. Better help couldn't be found anywhere. Mrs. Archbold's daughter Ioan, ls a likely wile for any man. For all twelve years she's been with us, And never makes a bit of fuss. Richard Bard was in both our plays, l-le's editor of Bear Facts, too, And we hear from lots oi girls, That he also can pitch the wooll Eldora Bauermeister is musically inclined, She's artistic, domestic, and very refined. She can bake a cake or turn a hem. As a wife she'll be a gem. King of Sports is our guy Cy, Who keeps himself in the public eye. He gives the girls many a thrill. We all like Les and we always will. Norma Baumgardner has big brown eyes. You can tell by her grades she's very wise. Her hair is naturally curly and brown, A nicer girl just can't be found Phyllis Carnes is next on our list, If she should leave, she'd certainly be missed. This glamorous gal was in both our plays, And yell leader during her senior days. A cute little gal is Irma Lou, She is a friend to all of you. This year she was our own cheer leader, We can't do without her, because we need her. Shirley Dalton works in a store, This attractive girl has friends galore. She had a whiny part in the senior play, But usually she's bright and gay. Next we come to Georgie Farr. He drives around in a Chevie car. His mouth's the biggest in the class, But .with us :oniors he will pass. Well, well, here's Floellen Fryback, For playing the piano she has a knack. She says shes a friend so the boy next aoor, But we wonder it it Coxzldnt be something more Helen Gallrneyer lives :em Poe. lflhen you tall: to her she giggles and says Oh . lunior irorn Hoagland is he: man, Hes tall and handsome ana 'req tan. Anna Heinrich whom you all know, Can really bake and cook and sew. Shes very quiet and also shy. But we know Anna will always get by. Leora Belle is a very nice girl, And around ner tace, her hair does curl. She is very contented as you all know, And sets everyones heart aglow. We've heard Maggie Hilgernan is not hard to please, That she and Cal have that awful disease. lt Consists oi four letters but means a lot. The disease is Love , believe it or not. Our girl coming up is quite artistic. Shes short, she-'s gay, and a cute little trick. nf' --i 'i . a.tv rioover will walk througn -iie, Looking, waiting, for a man without a wife. lxlary Esther from here in town, Seems to be one of our class clowns. Wnen she goes by, you should see her smile, She has a grin that will beam for a mile. Gaylord lackson is short and sort ot slim. Worrying about chemistry make him thin. When he gets married and has eight or nine, Everyone will say he's doing iine. Robert Kiefer who has no girl, Sits around with his head in a whirl. And now when he wants to spoon, He sits by himself out under the moon. loyce Kincaid says, How do I look? She has a fit it there's a crook That shouldnt be there, when lohnny's around To make a show in this big town. Larry Kreigh likes the girls, And more than that he prefers the curls. I-le doesn't have his ring anymore, He put it on Pat's finger by the door. Another from Tocsin? My, oh, myl That town surely can't be dry, With such a qirl as one like this. Ruth is just like her big sis. 4 Concluded on Page 22 21 CLASS POEM Continued Ellis McFadden is a senior lad, Who has a certain junior for a fad. I think Maxine really hits the spot, ls what 'Ellis savs when people quiz him a lot. Doris Elsie Miller hails from Tocsin way, The place can t be found on every map. But thcre's lots of excitement in that little town, When Doris falls in cr he-wolf's trap. Dorothy Miller says boys are a bother, They tell all they know to one another. Shell let them be for auite a span, To go where she pleases and whenever she can. Our very capable president in '45, Mar ane likes classical music as well as jive. Y I Could you imagine her hair being blonde? Of tall, dark, men she's very fond. Marjorie Scherry is a quiet lass, Still she's friendly to all that pass. As for boys she says, They don't worry me. l'll find one when l'm ready, tee, hee. Red hair and temper always go together, But we:-'re sure to Paul it doesnt matter. His crimson hair and green shirts really harmonize. Whom Paul will marry we can't surmise. Pat lives a high strung life, And for this man jerry, She s held her heart open, patiently hopin'. Some day the man to marry. With a nice personality and very pleasing voice, Mary Mae will surely be some lucky man's choice, She is good in art and in cooking, too. She surely shouldn't be difficult to woo. Now, my friends. there's Lc:Verne Slane. The boys think she's really a dame. When asked when she would settle down, l.aV?rnedsaid, When the right type l have oun . She was our sectetary in her sophomore year. You always know when Ioann is near. She s good in basketball and volleyball too, When looking for a mate not every one will do. Marcella, is a red headed Springer. Destined to be a good stenographer. Although, she seems to like a domestic life, Maybe she'll be a contented house wife. Robert Springer is the lad with a jeep. We can hear it coming with its mild peep, peep. He was Mr. Butterworth in our junior play, But in most classes he has little to say. 22 His parents named him Roger Roy, We all call him Stoney, He's our classes' great big boy, Who is anything but honey. Russel Thurber's the shortest in our class, He ll never settle down to just one lass. But as you all know he's the power to talk, And when he gets mad, my how he'll squawk. loan Valentine, is a quiet lass. We never know when she's in class. But when she catches the man in her life, He'll have to talk some to equal his wife. Dale is one of the many Werlings, Uncle Omar, to we seniors. He's tall, he's slow, he has cr head of cury hair. When he wants to be heard, we know he's there. Dorothy Werling is next on our list, She's tall, and blonde and full of zist. The picture editor for our Oracle, Dot won't stop for any obstacle. Wilmer is another of the Werlings, Butch is our senior president. He seems the quiet and bashful type, But the girls that go out with him never gripe. The next is a short, black-headed fellow, He hails from across the bridge. Of course, Wayne Wickliffe is the man, Near him youll usually see Ruth Manns. Mary Lou sports a diamond on her left finger, We don't know how long to Ray she'll linger, Said Ray, I want a sewer and an especially qood cook, And if you can do that, you're hooked. Now this is the line-up for the game. We're sure the winning won't be tame. You see it's Grads vs. The World. And on the floor our lives may be hurled. So goodby, dear students, teachers, and friends, All good things must come to an end. We bid you farewell, and wish you luck. May your lives be as nice as a book. After five years of being club members and one year of Assistant Iunior Leading under the guidance of Miss Smith, they became Iunior Lead- ers. Alice Hatfield, Marilyn Todd, Iackie Walker, and Rosella Fenton led the Serving Clubs, Maureen Bushee managed the Foods, and Nancy Patten, Max- ine Hendry, and Shirley Goshorn supervised the Baking. The girls all worked hard the first part of 1946 to raise money to pay their expenses to 4-H Round- up at Purdue. They left Ossian luly 8 and returned the lU. They lived in a dormitory and had very few classes. Miss Smith showed the girls all the points of interest around the campus. The girls learned new ideas from the dress revue, lectures, and demonstrations that were given. There were two Assistant Iunior Leaders in the organization. They were Noram Dalryrnple and Sharon Ginzel. These two girls hope to earn their right to go to Round-up too, 48 Z. '-f 1--'-2--' li-' 44 f K ff 9 ff , 5 CQ Lf xl 4. Richard Bard was chosen presidentg Wilmer Werling, vice-presidentg Leora Herbst, secretaryg and Pat Shierling, treasurer. The first question that was before us was whether to have a lunior-Senior Prom or a trip East when we were seniors. We are now looking forward to a trip. All attention was then given toward raising money for this trip. A great day in the year Was when 'we received our class rings. Also our first class play, Are You Mr. Butterworth? was an experience many of us won't forget. Forty-seven were enrolled in our junior year. Miss Wilda Hoopengardner and Arthur Gerwig were our sponsors. The year was ended with a dance in honor of the seniors. And now, our last and final yearl The year we were all striving and Working for had come. Some were glad to see it come, others had ci sickening feeling. But all good things must come to an end. We started the year off with a bang. Our first project was to open and run the canteen. Our next project was the carnival. And what a carnival! At least We liked the proceeds. Then We marched to Cron-Leone Studio to have our pictures taken. After that, the senior play, Cash and Carrie was given October l7 and l8 and was a success. Then we tried our luck as salesmen selling assorted Christmas cards. The people were beginning to call us beg- gars for we now went out and sold magazines. What a lifel Our name cards were also ordered and received. And we also sponsored two sock hops after home games. Three issues of Bear Facts were put outg the senior SSS girls sponsored a Sunshine party. The girls gave a magazine party for the boys and six students of the senior class took part in a radio program Around the Editor's Desk, ALL THIS BEFORE CHRISTMAS!! After Christmas vacation, We settled down to normal living. We took things easy, that isl We sponsored a skating party on lanuary 21. We had two more sock hops which were well attendedg participated in Iunior Town Meetingg senior girls beat the sophomore girls in a donkey basketball gameg senior girls were volleyball champions, beating the freshman 51-l.
