The new ad- dition to the school prompted us to realize the necessity of constant mental, physical, and spiritual growth of we, as individuals, to maintain a strong and progressive democratic nation. It has been the aim of the 1966 Chief- tain editors to capture some of the thoughts and actions which occurred during this aca- demic year. To it you must add your own thoughts and remembrances for the full pic- ture of the school year 1965-1966. Physical structures are a definite part of this building, but so are stage settings, concerts, yearbooks, research papers, sock hops, and floats. Each one has its own merit, and each contributes to the makeup of the person involved. 0 we ug, ,., , pn' 'S fi, V 9 ft, . wc., H2275 . Here is brought together the means for passing on those things that man has learned so that each generation does not have to begin anew. Regardless of what the future holds, it will re- quire men and women who have made the most of their opportunities and built strong foundations--who have used the facilities of the school both in the class room and in outside activities. Osseo High School is built on a single idea--that the student is the :enter of the institution and the reason for its existence. And so it maintains an atmosphere which permits and encourages the individual to develop to his greatest capacity and to accept responsibility. This atmosphere permeates classrooms, outside study, extracurricular activities, social program, student representation, and binding friend- ships. ! mm ,rs N1 iw! S: 'ig i EQDK U 'K H Because the school believes that tomorrow depends on an enlightened and sympathetic people, it strives to give the best possible education to its students. A close teacher-student relationship helps to create friendships between faculty and students which go beyond mere classroom acquaintances. The eagerness of teachers to help the individual student is a distinctive factor enabling student growth. 9 BOOKS ARE THE FOUNDATION in our building for tomorrow, for here are noted all man's thoughts, words, and deeds from the beginning of recorded history. From the record of the past we learn of successes and failures and make a blueprint for the future. Our study of the past develops judgment and foresight and gives us a sense of perspective. 44 4 -, .f if l A 5 I if lssll I in BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS OF A LIFETIME is a part of attending any school. Learning to get along with others and to develop co- operation and leadership is a part of school and an education for the future. School is more than a place to go just to pass time. In the school you meet people and have discussions. For from these discussions, the exchange of ideas and impressions that are shared, comes an ability to present, defend, weigh, and evaluate different points of view . RECREATION ALSO IS A PART of school life. Mental health, physical health, and social health are inter-dependent, and ex- periences are provided in all of these fields. An active intramural athletic program as well as varsity games provide an outlet for physical energy. Special events of Home- coming and Prom are occasions for additional planned recreation and social activity. I2 X ., Q X W L'kL '. - ' ..- X A sw im' ' , - H ,, .U x U .-3' ,!.f L :mt-g'-. In addition to work inthe classroom our school has extracurricular groups interested in drama, forensics, debate, music, athletics, and language. Ways of developing abilities, broadening in- terests and serving others are available to all stu dents. T ,J 3 1 TDUDY UE FOLLOW . TEMOHQDUMELEAD l Gradualing Class of 1966 BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE is a never- ending process for the future lies always ahead. Education is an attitude--an out- look--and, of course, unlike a physical structure, is never finished. For new views continue to open before us and the further we pursue knowledge, the more we are aware of new areas. But the habits of study, of learning, of participation, of weighing and evaluation, are the supports we have gained in school for meeting the opportunities and challenges which will come to us. Sink the Pirates , the Freshman float, brought third place honors to the class and was chalked up as experience. The presence of the class is felt in all areas of the school. In G.A.A. and Boys Intermural Sports, they proved to upperclassmen that they intend to be serious contenders for the school honors. The Honor Roll proves that these Freshmen are on their toes with their studies, too. They were: R- Wesflie President, Terry Smithg Vice President, Sue Rindalg Secretary -Treasurer, Nancy Myhresg and Student Coun- cil Representative, Karen Brechlin. The year's first activity was preparing a float for Homecoming. The theme Dunk 'Em was portrayed by the Chieftains dunking a doughnut in a cup. Although they had high hopes, the Juniors were given fourth place. One of the most important events of the year was ordering class rings. Another important event was the Prom. The song, Some Enchanted Evening, was chosen as the theme of the dance, April 16, 1966. These are only a few of the many activities which they will always remember as part of the junior year at O.H.S. Each one has brought them closer to the final year of their high school education. They look forward to their last year with anticipation, and see new goals to meet. 38 S 4 I emi Vs 5 'Q ff I . .F 5 1 I 1 r at P Guan swyiwza ,. an 25 2553 iii? ,,xsA4,2i , QW , 11' ,Ei I Sify . 4 A 3927552 WEN 2931 'T Qwm 525511- B 9? ig? Prior to the opening of school, the class took buses to Eau Claire to have Senior portraits taken. They had to concede their ability to build floats this year. After two years of capturing first place, they bowed to the Sophomore ability to outdo them in originality. The Senior boys, how- ever, won all places on the Homecoming Royalty, Bo Walstrom an exchange student from Sweden spent the first semester with the class, and Helena Ferrez of Brazil joined them for the last half of the year. Much was learned about the people and traditions of both countries through contact with Bo and Helena. The ordering of announcements and caps and gowns made the class realize how rapidly their high school career was coming to a close. Dates were set for the class trip to Wisconsin Dells, Bacca- laureate and Commencement Services, and Awards Night. The rest of her family consists sisters and her twin sister. While living here she made her home with Reverend and Mrs. John Morrison who have two young daughters. Her hobbies are swimming, painting, reading, and music. She took up the great American pastime of golfing during her stay here. In our school, Helena was active in G.A.A. , Choir, Pep Club, and Annual Staff. Hel- ena left Rio in December while the tem- peratures were in the 100's and came for a six and one half month stay in Wiscon- sin where sub-zero temperatures were ev- eryday occurrences in the winter months After her return to Brazil, Helena will finish her second semester of Brazilian High School and prepare for her college rce exams. Having Helena was a experience for many reasonsg but the two outstanding ones were that she was the first girl from the exchange program, and she came from a country that most of us knew relatively little about. Her brief stay here has given us an entirely differ- ent view of Brazil and South America in general. She will never be forgotten and many memories will be stored up as a re- sult of our Helena. A sound athletic program is as much a part of the modern high school as an up-to-date curriculum. Under the supervision of Coach Matye and Assistant Coach Mulhern, the football team play- ed its best season in the history of the Dairyland Conference. With Mr. Mulhern as Head Coach and Mr. Matye as Assistant Coach, the basketball team also had its best record in Dairyland Conference action, During the first half of the season, Mr. Mulhern and his team received special mention for four consecutive weeks in the rating of the top ten small schools in the state of Wisconsin. The wrestling squad, led by Head Coach Bong and Assistant Coach Haus- childt finished one of their best seasons and were rated second among other area wrestling squads. Two boys went to the Regional Tournament and one went on to the Sectional Tourna- ment. Guiding the track team, Head Coach Matye and Assistant Coaches Mulhern and Bong sent one individual to State Competition for Class C schools. Coach Laufenberg has been suc- cessful in building to top positions the golf team in future competition. Baseball, a summer sport headed by Coach Mulhern, has started to gain more interest at Osseo, with the landscap- ing of a new field and the building of a batting cage. The raduatin class of 1966, therefore, salutes the members of the coaching staff of Osseo High Sclgool for tlgeir fine accomplishments and achievements during the past 1965-1966 sports year.
