History of the Class of 1943 Let us turn our calendars back to the year 1931 when a very unusual group of two girls and five boys entered the gateway of education together. Robert Allen, Jean Blanc, June Glantzer, Robert Oberster, Max Phillips. Donald Poling and Lewis Simich composed this group of five youngsters. With the encouragement given by their teachers they managed to see their way through the diflicult tasks that lay ahead of them. Miss Lamborn was the first grade teacher. Remember, girls, how those michievous boys would tease and pull those neatly combed curls? Miss Carlin guided us through the second and third grades. Jean Wanner from New Frank- lin, Ohio. added her name to the enrollment. Advancing with our educational knowledge we were then promoted to the fourth grade with Miss George as our teacher. At this time Kenneth McNatt made his appearance in our classroom. In the fifth grade Virginia Parker became one of us. In the sixth grade, with Miss Rayot as teacher, we welcomed Velma Toalston. We were all looking forward to that day when we would enter Junior High School. Well. that day came and were we excited! We would change classes just like the older pupils. This year we were under the splendid direction of Miss Fruth. Days flew by, and as our eighth grade leader, we had Miss Weisgerber. This year we added Dorothy Baker and Edith Rock. Commencement-what a day that was! There were seventy-two students graduating. an even number of boys and girls. In the fall of 1939 the following groups of students waited anxiously for the school bus to pick them up for the Hrst time and take them to East Canton High School. Included in this group were the students from Center, Centerville, Mapleton, Ex- celsior, Belfort, Hickory Grove, and Indian Run. At this time Don Villard from Lincoln. and Dorothy Ryman from Ravenna Township joined our ranks. My, didn't we think we were grown up, but we were soon put in our places. What a contrast to the one-room school houses: we were utterly lost in such a big place, but as time passed we had adjusted ourselves to the change considerably. We spent the first semester in the old building and after Christmas vacation we had a new building to return to. We were now under the direction of Miss Peterson and Miss Oyer. Our sophomore year brought four new students, Betty Bland from Timken High School, Margaret Barnes from McKinley High School, Lucille Curren from Waynesburg, and Donna Mauer from Baltic, Ohio, We were now under the direction of Miss Chenot. This year we lost Jean Blanc to a Youngstown school. Our sophomore year slipped past and before we knew it we were juniors and under the direction of Miss Badger.
