The 1943 Echo ata-ff ,,,Q 5 JL qs, Q get af af , J- L 50 ul History of the Class of 1943 Let us turn our calendars back to the year 1931 when a very unusual group of two girls and five boys entered the gateway of education together. Robert Allen, Jean Blanc, June Glantzer, Robert Oberster, Max Phillips. Donald Poling and Lewis Simich composed this group of five youngsters. With the encouragement given by their teachers they managed to see their way through the diflicult tasks that lay ahead of them. Miss Lamborn was the first grade teacher. Remember, girls, how those michievous boys would tease and pull those neatly combed curls? Miss Carlin guided us through the second and third grades. Jean Wanner from New Frank- lin, Ohio. added her name to the enrollment. Advancing with our educational knowledge we were then promoted to the fourth grade with Miss George as our teacher. At this time Kenneth McNatt made his appearance in our classroom. In the fifth grade Virginia Parker became one of us. In the sixth grade, with Miss Rayot as teacher, we welcomed Velma Toalston. We were all looking forward to that day when we would enter Junior High School. Well. that day came and were we excited! We would change classes just like the older pupils. This year we were under the splendid direction of Miss Fruth. Days flew by, and as our eighth grade leader, we had Miss Weisgerber. This year we added Dorothy Baker and Edith Rock. Commencement-what a day that was! There were seventy-two students graduating. an even number of boys and girls. In the fall of 1939 the following groups of students waited anxiously for the school bus to pick them up for the Hrst time and take them to East Canton High School. Included in this group were the students from Center, Centerville, Mapleton, Ex- celsior, Belfort, Hickory Grove, and Indian Run. At this time Don Villard from Lincoln. and Dorothy Ryman from Ravenna Township joined our ranks. My, didn't we think we were grown up, but we were soon put in our places. What a contrast to the one-room school houses: we were utterly lost in such a big place, but as time passed we had adjusted ourselves to the change considerably. We spent the first semester in the old building and after Christmas vacation we had a new building to return to. We were now under the direction of Miss Peterson and Miss Oyer. Our sophomore year brought four new students, Betty Bland from Timken High School, Margaret Barnes from McKinley High School, Lucille Curren from Waynesburg, and Donna Mauer from Baltic, Ohio, We were now under the direction of Miss Chenot. This year we lost Jean Blanc to a Youngstown school. Our sophomore year slipped past and before we knew it we were juniors and under the direction of Miss Badger. During our junior year Maxine 14, The 1943 Echo History of the Class of I943 Hostutler from West Virginia joined our forces and Jean Blanc returned after she found out that East Canton was the better school. We elected our own Russ Campbell as class president: Gloria Miller, vice-president: and Dorothy Ryman as secretary-treasurer. We started off on the right foot by earning money so we could give the seniors a nice banquet. We sponsored Doc Williams and His Border Riders which brought in a prolit that was encouraging to all of us. Paul Fink had the right idea: if George Washington could get along by always telling the truth, so could he. This was the theme of the junior class play, Nothing But the Truth, pro- duced under the direction of Miss McCullough. Helen Bushman played opposite Paul and it was a great success. This year we started a new custom by ordering our class rings in our junior year. We were all proud of them and displayed them with great pride. On one evening in May. young gentlemen were calling for their young lady friends: yes. you guessed right, the junior- senior banquet held at the Colonial Inn, which was pronounced a huge success. On September 9, 1942, thirty-eight students entered Osnaburg Township High School for their final year of high school days. We were again under the splendid supervision of Miss Badger. We elected Bob Royer as class president: Bob Marks, vice-president: Lucille Curren, secre- tary: and Margaret Kolm, treasurer. We sold subscriptions for magazines and sponsored motion pictures to earn money in order that we might be able to sponsor an annual for the year. The cast for the senior class play was chosen and practice began immediately. On Novem- ber 21. 1942, Paul Fink and Mary Bahler had the leading roles in the play, You Can't Take It With You. under the direction of Miss Russell. Everyone in the class worked hard to make the play a big success. In our school days together we have met many difficulties but with the encouragement of our teachers we were able to confront them. We have had good times together and we will never forget our school days at Osnaburg Township High School. We are now going out to face the world alone. Some will be looking forward to college, while others will have defense jobs. and many of the boys will be serving their country in the armed forces. Wherever we may be, our old alma mater will long live in our hearts. Dora Ellen Beclflfl-l The 1943 Echo 15 First row, left to right-James Hall, president. JUNIOR CLASS Even though the Juniors were confronted by the problem of raising funds for the Junior-Senior Banquet, they had already accomplished a great deal. This year they sponsored Joe Barker and his Chuckwagon Gang which brought enjoyment to those who attended the program. Helping Uncle Sam by picking apples, followed by a Weiner frazzle was loads of fun. Also they had a square dance to relieve the tension of school work. They were proud that the football queen and a cheerleader were chosen from their class. Then too, members of the class participated in such activities as Hi-Y, Varsity Sub-Deb, Girl Reserves and all the musical organizations. 16 The 1943 Echo SOPHOMORES First row, left to right-Zerbe, Showalter, Rose, Quinlan, Baker.
