No school board ever has an emy job . . . there is always a problem, always a chal- lenge, always the same struggle to provide the very best in housing, in equipment, and in instruction at a price the community can afford. From the beginning, Oshkosh school boards have met the same hurdles. Even a century ago, when life was sup- posedly much simpler, our high school became overcrowded. In 1863 it outgrow the rooms it was using at the Congregational church, and a movement was begun to build I1 new school on the present sito for which the board had paid 354,500 in 1855. However, the proposal aroused such violent controversy that it wasn't until 1867 that the new school was actually built and ready for occupancy. f'Twa.s ever thuslj As our town has grown, our school population has increased from one school with one teacher and a handful of pupils to Hfteen public schools with 333 teachers and 7,777 students. For 113 years a succession of school boards . . . dedicated men and women . . . have met and solved the complexities of an ever-changing situation. The present board will ofhciatc at the passing ol' still another milestone, the open- ing of the First completely new high school since 1902. To borrow a phrase from a familiar television program, Progress is our most impor- tant productnl 8
