ZEE I M LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. George Oaks, Mr. C. W. Boller, Mr. James Cain, Mr. Phillip Lam- pert, Mr. Wesley Schneider, Mr. Harold Pederson, Mr. Milton Seefeld fPresidentj. Sa 759141650 For years a succession of school boards has worked to bring better school condi- tions to our city. Naturally, not all groups have agreed upon the best solution to our problem, but nobody ever questioned the sincerity of each. Then . . . Novem- ber 4, 1958, and the culmination of all the years of unsellish effort. Although we who are students at OHS today will not benefit directly from your action, we will have the proud satisfaction of seeing our children attend a new high school in a growing community! ff? 4 iff but Lf 9 fa-gg? lm 1 il giiN,il 4'?i9i nf tr EACH NEW YEAR brings new problems to any school but this fall brought more than its share to OHS. Most of them stemmed from the one big problem of too little space for too many people, and so the 'cstagger system was born. When we came to school fa day earlier than usuallj, we were given a brand new type of pro- gram in one of four attractive colors and we learned that the color of the card determined the shift to which we had been assigned. The plan allowed for only two-thirds of us to be in school at any one time so, what with two study halls taken over for classroom use, most of us were free to leave the building when we were not act- ually in class. It was fun and exciting at first - coming and going at odd hours, rushing down for a coke in mid-morning - but, suddenly, we began to dis- cover some of the drawbacks. We found that we missed seeing many of our best friends whose shifts were different from ours and we realized too, that the new schedule provided little or no time for club or class meetings or for assemblies or pep rallies. We decided that maybe the new freedom wasn't quite to glamorous, after all! 5 In spite of the many handicaps, or, perhaps, because of them, faculty and students worked to- gether wholeheartedly to make sure that the learn- ing process went on without interruption and We 1' ta '7 We under the skillful guidance of our teachers. Miss Eva Asmundsen passed away on November twenty-sixth. Her jine teaching, her wise counsel, and her warm friendship will always be an inspira- tion to those whose lives she touched. ,.f',-7' 'xx ' x mf' uf Y? 12 euwl776e4. Soon I shall have to leave Oshkosh and it seems that I came just yesterday. I shall be glad to be home again with my family and my friends, but at the same time it makes me sad to depart from all of you. I am grateful to the American Field Service which gave me the opportunity to come to the U.S., however, I owe sincerest thanks to you who made my stay a success. Even in France I have never felt so much friendliness or such a desire to help as in Oshkosh High. Everyone has tried his best to make me feel at home. Now Oshkosh has really become my second hometown. The Marquarts, with whom I lived, accepted me like a real member of their family and gave me many opportunities to understand better the American way of life. When I return to the French system of studies, I shall never forget the wonderful moments connected with OHS . . . at dances, parties, meetings, and games, on my trips out of town, while reading poems at the Roman Banquet, and with my cockroaches in the Senior Class play! I found my experiences on committees and with the Student Council most valu- able. The Council, I felt, was really the heart of Oshkosh High School. I would like to thank the school officials and the faculty who joined with the students to make my stay both pleasant and profitable. E Soon, in many ways too soon, I shall have to leave you and Oshkosh, but I hope to come back some day - in a few years, perhaps. If any one of you should go to France, I surely would like to welcome him or her to my little town of Bressuire where I would try to return some of the kindnesses you have shown me. Our team was strengthened by the 300 hitting of Gary Johnson and Dick Konrad and by the fine pitching performances turned in by Johnson and Don Lehman. af Taking sixth place in the conference, the OHS golf team lost two dual meets then came out first, second, and third in quadrangular play. Coach Nord's boys qualified for state with a second place in the sectionals. Top performance was by sophomore Dave Graska who twice shot 39 for nine holes and a 74 for 18. Other lettermen: H. Our second place rat- ing was made possible by Chuck Bleckinger, the first sopho- more to place first in the conference, and seniors Karl Schwertfeger and Ken Krohn. They kept us in the first division for the third straight year. Sparked by state high jump winner, Gene Englund, our thinclads piled up a 3-2 record in dual meets, a second in the triangular meet, and a seventh in the conference. Be- sides Englund, who set a new high-jump record, strong team members were lettermen Cowan, Gumz, Wesner, and Whitty. The future looks good for our track squad. I only have eyes for you. THE REGAL COURT! Flower girls Elizabeth Karr and Margaret Putzer with crown bearer Dennis Dahl present a charming picture on stage. 74a Every year in the early spring an air of great secrecy pervades our school. It is then that the girls of the senior class elect the May Queen and her court - the best loved and most representative girls in the class. This year the secret of the Queen's iden- tity was Ruth Ann Harring'ton's to keep. On the evening of May 1, Ruth Ann, preceded by the members of her court, en- tered the gym in a white formal thus ending our suspense for another year! This is the forest primeval, The murmuring pines and the hemlocks????,' No, this is M the moment the class of '59 had been waiting for. Seniors and their dates danced in a mossy forest scene un- der the MOONLIGHT MIST that appeared in the cloud-studded sky. 0 l This went on for weeks - but it was worth it. Graduates joined their fellow band mem- bers for the last time to give us a rousing send-off. H1759 On June 4, the Class of 1959 reached that coveted goal, graduation! After hours of morning marching practice in the hot sun, a red-faced group of seniors - 410 strong - entered the athletic Held at exactly five o'clock attired in bright blue caps and gowns. We received our diplomas, we listened to our class speakers, we shed a tear or two over the memories brought back by the A Cappella Choir and the Con- cert Band, and, suddenly, we realized that we were truly alumni of our Alma Mater. As the strains of Pomp and Circumstancen floated over the field, we filed out feel- ing neither pompous nor circumstantial but rather that much, so much, lay before us as a challenge to be met. Sadly, then, we bade adieu to all that had comprised our happy years at OHS. 147 D. Lehman and Gary Johnson hurl- ing a few hot ones. mpg K. Weber adds the finishing touches.
