CALLIES: How many of us have you to thank for see- ing to it that we got our mother's Christmas present done on time? How many of us have you to thank for spending that extra hour of your own time to help us over the rough spots? Or how many of us realize that we have you to thank for the construction of the sets for our plays and our operettas? Most important, how many of us have thanked you? In dedi- cating this NOTIBOOK to you, may we say it now, again, for all of us? Thank ou, Mr. , MWKN ilxjlwlzfiw t 770214 ffcmalel 70nd DEAR MISS WOOD: If we had a penny for everything you have ever taught us, for every laugh you have ever given us, for every hour you have ever worked with us, we would have more than enough mon ey for that new high school. . .It's hard to find the right words to use on an occasion like thisg we don't want to say all the usual things. So let's just say that we dedicate this NOTE- BOOK to you because you're Our Miss Wood and we love you! 5 ffl' .4 l , A- cog Q. ,V f V ' . , 'r T' X O 4' Q ek 5 Q, .-, .3 ko? ,b-SP, oz 7 CPR... J. Poumafzq 'faonoyqi Attendance If absence makes the heart grow fonderg some of these kids must LOVE school! AS WE ENTERED THE DOOR on the first day of school, we saw at once that something new had been added . It seems that during the summer a very handsome cage had been built in the main hall and we were told that, to relieve the con- gestion in the office, all excuses would be issued from this cage. Already a worn path leading up to each window is be- ginning to show! But the office changes went far beyond the merely physi- cal. Mr. Traeger, who had been our vice-principal, had be- come principal, while Mr. Fratt had moved into the vice- principal's spot. The offices of dean of boys and girls had been abolished and, in their stead, were two guidance coun- sellors, Miss. Wright and Mr. Weess, whose job it has been to give us understanding and help with our problems. In addi- tion, two new secretaries had been added to handle excuses and other administrative details which had formerly been the responsibility of the deans . . . All in all, these far-reaching changes have brought about a smoother running school. 9 EVA ASMUNDSEN Math ARNO BADE Mathematlcs JANET BAILIE Busmess Ed ematlcs Let s get thas Look, glrls, the show's up here ight ? A A U er g f, 'I'he Girls' Muscle Building Society or, as it is known to us now, the GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSO- CIATION, was formed in 1929. Of course, girls' athletics have always held an important place in our school, but it was not until then that a special club for muscle bui1ding was created. The speci- fic purpose of the organization is to teach girls how to enjoy sports and to develop the qualities of good sportsmanship.. In addition to a series of intramural tournaments, the club offers many, many op- portunities in both group and indi- vidual sports for the girls to enjoy. At the end of the year awards of merit are presented to the most outstanding athletes. Advisors: Miss Siebert, Mrs. Faust. These girls are energetic In matters ath-a-1etic! 1 .7,f4,f-if' .c W hen they discovered how much the girls were enjoying their athletic association, the boys decided to form a muscle -building society of their own. So, in 1954, the MEN'S INTRAMURAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIA- TION was organized to make it pos- sible for more boys to participate in sports and to promote the enjoyment of all kinds of athletics. Any boy is eligible to join. Basketball, volley- ball, ping pong, golf and many other sports are offered to club members and, at the end of the year, special awards are presented to outstanding athletes . .t.. After a while, the French Students began to feel a bit put out and thought that they should have some sort of organization. It seemed a bit foolish, however, to have a second club, so the two groups merged and became the present MODERN LANGUAGE CLUB. To become a member, one needs only to take a course in either French or Spanish because the purpose of the group is to promote an interest in foreign languages in our school and our community. Our Indians opened slowly and trailed at the half but came back late in the game to be edged out by only a 19-13 score. Our first conference game was at home against Green Bay West. Oshkosh had Vfest at the half but eventually lost the lead and, when the clock ran out West emerged a 10-7 victor. The following week we played host to the Manitowoc Shipbuilders who last season tied our indiana 6-6. Both teams fought hard but the jinx still held and the game ended in a 7-7 deadlock. Paul Poeschl, a junior who saw action in his sophomore year, was outstanding. After some hard work and a few changes, our Indians were ready for anything that came along. The first was a smash- ing 2t, -0 victory over East.Green Bay just fell apart under our hard-playing team sparked by Jerry Annis, Oshkosh's all-conference man. The next was a Saturday aftemoon game at Sheboygan Central where our Indians wound up on the short end of a 7-6 score. The season was cli- maxed by a Ylednesday afternoon game against Fond du Lac at oar field. School was out until the following Monday so most of OHS was out backing the indians as they Ioughi to a 33-12 triumph. X 'I Yeah, Indians! We were supposed to stay quietly in the LQ cellar and we did. . .for the first round, that is. We did have two big moments: Q J! first, when we won from Ripon and, second, when we came within a point of ' A beating Green Bay West. But in all the other games, we were strictly in the minus Q column. Oh, well , we thought, every team has to have an off year and this is - our. Let's face it. But we reckoned without the spirit of the Oshkosh Indians and ' the brilliant coachin or Mr. Nord g . In the second round of play we cme back to win all but twO games fGreen Bay East and Fond du Lacj with victories over such contenders for the championship as Appleton, Sheboygan North, and Manitowoc.
