Sl10WC'1'S. Schrafl- Allen DEAR CLASSMATES or O.H.S. To some of you this past school year maybe did not seem so nice. But there is one person which en- joyed every minute of it. This person is me. This school year in O.H.S. has given me such a wonderful experience. It is over now and I regret this very much. I grew accustomed very easily to the differ- ences between my home country, Austria, and the U.S.A. Everything which I thought so different in the beginning seems now very natural to me. I remember the first day in O.H.S. very distinctly. The wandering from one classroom to another con- fused me because, in Vienna, we all stay in the same room. But I am very proud that I didn't get lost, thanks to all of you and your help and kindness. Every one of you helped me to feel right at home and that means a lot. You invited me to join your clubs and take part in many other activities in Oshkosh High. I was even elected vice-president of the Modern Language Club. I think that clubs are wonderful to make friends and learn some new and interesting things about the U. S. and other countries and I wish I could start a club in my school in Vienna. The subjects I took helped me very much to learn and understand more about the U.S.A., especially American Problems and U.S. History. Since I came to Oshkosh, I became a real sports fan. I certainly enjoyed all football and basketball games and I think the teams were just wonderful. Next year I'll think of your games and teams, you can be sure. I am so thankful to the Student Council which brought me over here and to all of you because part of the money you get from the magazine campaign paid for my staying. I would like to thank, too, all of my teachers and the whole faculty for everything they have done for me. Goodbye to Oshkosh and O.H.S. Your exchange student from Vienna, film Left to right: E. The following week at Manitowoc, Oshkosh scored in the last minute of play to make it 13-7 in our favor. Then came the important battle with the defending champs, Green Bay West, and, after a few costly errors, we wound up on the short end of a 27-7 score - our only defeat of the season. Our Homecoming game was next on the schedule and a happy homecoming it was as we took Sheboygan Central into camp to the tune of 27-13. On the next three week-ends the Indians triumphed over Appleton C25-OJ, Sheboygan North 16-05, and Green Bay East 114-75, and we rang down the curtain by routing our traditional rival, Fond du Lac, 54-6. It is significant that five of our linemen were named on all-conference teams: center Dick Teteak C both defensive and offensive squadsl, jerry Peppler ide- fensel, Bell Ceelen fdefensej, guard jerry Neubauer Coffense, and tackle Gary Kassube Coffensej. HOW THEY DID IT The 1954-'55 basketball season was a championship one for O.H.S. Sweeping through conference play with ten wins and three losses, the Indians brought to Oshkosh its first basketball cham- pionship since 1951. Sharing the crown with Manitowoc iwhom they beat twice! J, our cagers provided thrills a-plenty in their many closely-fought games. Remember the overtime victory against Mani- tpwoc? In M.I.A.A. tournament play, Menasha proved to be the same old nemesis she has in other years and eliminated the Indians from further competition. However, the season was still an overwhelming success and a tip of the hat goes to coach Ronnie Nord and his fine championship Indians! Compiling an overall season's record of 15 wins and 2 losses, Oshkosh swept to the state title and annexed its second straight league crown. Pulling several exciting victories out of the fire in tournament play, the Indians defeated Kenosha in the finals behind the no-hit pitching of Harold Gauger and Howie Koplitz. The 1955 season promises to be equally successful since nearly all the veterans have returned. Although it is still early, we have already avenged both of our defeats of last year by trouncing Menasha once and Sheboygan Central twice. 1 1 s u . I , p M ' I fi U . They were in there fighting, though, every minute and sev- eral of the fellows did succeed in reaching the state finals. The 1955 team seems to be headed in a better direction and a winning season may be in the ofiing. Since several lettermen are re- turning, the outlook is much brighter. However, as the sea- son progresses and the fellows gain in experi- ence, they may become opponents to be reck- oned with. TENNIS Front: Haebig, Harrington, Wheeler, Krueger, Davis Rear: Roley, Steiger, Eisch, Pinkerton, Kohl, Stelzner The 1954 tennis season saw the O.H.S. racketmen chalk up four wins against five losses, a record which earned them fifth place in the conference standings. The five losses can be explained in part by the tough schedule and in part by the fact that the team was made up largely of underclassmen. The season fin- ished on a bright note as Bob Haebig and Danlee Timm finished 3rd in the conference doubles tournament. Thus far this year the team has dropped its opening match with Watnptnn but, with the return of four letter-men, Coach Hansen feels that the team will get back on the victory trail in short order.
