The Write ldee Good communication skills are essential in every day life, and students learned that even the basics can be fun. The mechanics of Eng- lish were never greeted enthusiastically, but after students improved their abilities the change was evident in their writing. Lan- guage arts teachers emphasized the impor- tance of proper grammar and punctuation, but also encouraged students to be creative. Studying the literature works of others often sparked the imagination of students, and teachers thought of new ideas to keep the students involved. Foreign language students were exposed to different cultures while they learned an- other language. Observing customs from oth- er countries on the day of holidays gave stu- dents an idea of what their foreign counter- parts were doing, and added spice to life in the foreign language department Movies and stories in the language of study were also included to expand the students' horizons. In Media Productions, students learned all aspects of planning, producing, broadcast- ing, and promoting television and radio pro- grams. Classes worked together as teams to create video tapes, slide presentations, and school-wide broadcasts for events such as Homecoming week and Student Government elections, Students also came up with anti- drug abuse campaigns which were displayed in the cafeteria. Formula For' Sur: By Erika Harvey Mathematics was a fact of life for practically every student dur- ing four years of high school. Courses ranged from the practi- cal Consumer Math to the highly advanced analytical skills re- quired in Geometry, Algebra and Calculus. The Math Department strove to teach every student the skills that would enhance his or her future. This year was the first year that Osceola offered the prepara- tory course for the Scholastic Ap- titude Test CSATJ. The course was offered for seven weeks. Stu- dents spent two hours after school in hopes of raising their math scores and improving their chances for getting into a good college. The Math Department also sponsored Mu Alpha Theta. Mrs. Hannigan was in charge of this group of math lovers. Students in the club had several opportunities over the year to hear guest speak- ers from mathematical fields. Miss Crane, head of the De- partment said, We have put forth a united effort to teach the students what they really need to learn. 1 881 M athematics
