Although this was his first year at Osceola, it was not his first experience work- ing with youthful students. Mr. Sullivan is an accomplished vio- linist and director of the Pinellas Youth Symphony. h How did you get involved with mu- sic? An older man who was a violin- ist was a good friend of the family and my parents wanted me to play the violin some day so they got me started. How long have you been playing the violin? Since I was about 8 C16 yearsl. How did you get involved with the Youth Symphony? I began playing with the Pinel- las Youth Symphony when I was about l l years old and played un- til I graduated from high school. Three years ago I became part of the staff of the Symphony, work- ing as the string coach and later as the director of the Chamber String program. When the music director position became avail- able, I decided to apply for it and I got it. That was this past year. Tell me about your experience with a large symphony. I played in the Florida Orches- tra for 4 years before I began teaching. Before that, I played in the University of South Florida Orchestra for 6 years. In the sum- mers of '83-'86 I toured with a Christian Orchestra around the U.S. and parts of Europe. Any other comments? Music has always been in im- portant part of my life. Even though my profession is teaching, I'm thankful for my job as direc- tor and my violin.
