Importe-cl? Club Promoted Foreign Study By Kim Preston Learning the English language is tough enough, but members of the French and Spanish clubs chose to pursue a second lan- guage as well. The main purpose of the French Club was to enhance the love and support of the French culture and unite the French speaking stu- dents from different classes. The Spanish Clubs purpose was to get stu- dents more involved with Spanish outside the classroom. The Spanish Club met the second Tuesday of each month to collect dues and discuss up- coming events. They hoped to hold a fund raiser to raise money for new teaching aids such as a VCR and camera. Also, they hoped to attend a performance of the Ballet Folklor- ico de Mexico. The French Club held the Paris in Spring messages as a fund raiser in hopes to attend the play 'La Petit France' and any others that came up. The French Club also got together with the Spanish Club and planned activities for For- eign Language week, March 5-ll, such as fashion shows and a small play. , 1 . fgL.1fi 'i' :if of If 3 ik X Ag Jennifer Ulsberger encourages some students to join a club Stacey Trombetta and David jackson collect monthly dues. 162!French and Spanish Clubs

In Pursuit l of Excellence By Bill whaien Members in National Honor Soci- ety fN.H.S.J, Academic Team CA- teamj, or Mu Alpha Theta got a feel- ing of achievement and self-esteem from participating in these clubs. To be eligible for these clubs students had to excel in academics and responsibil- ity. To qualify for N.H.S. selected members first needed to be an intelli- gent and outgoing person. To be con- sidered students had to have at least a 3.6 g.p.a. Next the candidates had to pass a committee that judged their scholarship, leadership, service and character. If they passed this they could be inducted in the club. The club provided tutoring services and toy drives for refugees. As to the effective- ness of tutoring Jennifer Mujat had this to say, The tutoring program went wellf' N.H.S, has had a chapter here since 1981. A-team was made up of approxi- mately ten people who competed against other schools from Pinellas County answering academic questions from math, to history and everything in between. Five schools competed at each match with five to seven people on a team. Students competed for points. Heather Brannon, first year member, commented, The best part of A-team is the atmosphere during a competition, itis filled with excitement and electricitylw A-team has improved it's skills with each year of existence. Mu Alpha Theta was a group of stu- dents that had Ns and Bis in Algebra Two and above. At their meetings Mu Alpha Theta discussed math related fields. Suzanne Mayeux said, Math is my favorite subject, so participating in Mu Alpha Theta is an Honorf, A-team: Front Row: Scott Manlin, David Olmstead.
